Built in three main stages, the first was an earthwork with Aubrey holes, the second added 82 bluestones from Wales forming a double circle and aligned entrance, and the third brought Sarsen stones from the Marlborough Downs arranged in an outer circle and five trilithons in a horseshoe. After 1500 BC, the bluestones were rearranged into the circle and horseshoe seen today. Visitors can view the stones through English Heritage, though walking among them is restricted except on special occasions.
