We don't fully understand the consequences yet, but there is still hope, says oceanographer Tim Smyth","text":"At dusk, the greatest migration of biomass on Earth unfolds through the oceans in near silence, largely unnoticed. Trillions of often tiny creatures – zooplankton, krill, lanternfish – rise in synchrony from the depths, drawn by blooms of phytoplankton in the uppermost layers of water. They feast through the night, safe from predators that hunt by sight, then retreat as the sun rises.\n\nThe ebb and flow of the sun and moon dictate the behaviour of many sea creatures. But in recent decades, large areas of the ocean surface have mysteriously been darkening. Tim Smyth, a marine scientist at Plymouth Marine Laboratory in the UK, and his colleagues were the first researchers to spot this pattern in the open ocean last year. Since then, he has continued to study how the oceans are shifting in response to global warming alongside changes in land use – and the crucial role that light plays within these habitats.","link_original":"https://www.newscientist.com/article/2519611-oceans-are-darkening-all-over-the-planet-whats-going-on/","status":2,"country":[],"sections":[{"id":49,"name":"Oceans and seas"}],"root_section":{"id":108,"name":"Conserving Wild Nature"},"is_photo":false,"is_video":false,"is_large_font":false,"show_in_news_list":false,"url_to_show_in_news_list":"","location_filters":{"countries":[],"regions":[{"id":12,"name":"Global"}]},"filters":[]},{"id":"dd9c995a-16c7-437b-917f-143b02234ed4","slug":"newscientist-discovery-tours-science-inspired-experiences-tours-crusises-expeditions-weekenders-post","created_at":"2024-10-28T17:07:58Z","views":43,"name":"NewScientist Discovery tours. Researchers, including those from the Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, University of Groningen, reveal that these coastal features face threats from both rising sea levels and encroaching infrastructure. Analyzing sandy beaches, they found that buildings or paved roads are situated just 390 meters from the sea, with densely populated areas like the Netherlands having distances as tight as 210 meters. The study predicts that 23 to 30 percent of beaches and dunes may be lost or submerged by 2100 due to rising sea levels and human development. Protected dune areas exhibit a fourfold increase in the distance between infrastructure and the sea compared to unprotected zones. The protection status now covers only 16% of the world's sandy coasts, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced conservation
