Led by Prof. Eleanor Scerri of the Max Planck Institute and Prof. Andrea Manica of the University of Cambridge, researchers analyzed archaeological and environmental data from the last 120,000 years. They found that around 70,000 years ago, humans began to exploit a wider range of habitats in Africa—ranging from forests to deserts—marking a major expansion in their ecological niche. This flexibility was not seen in earlier populations and likely equipped them to survive in more challenging environments. Unlike earlier failed migrations that relied on favorable climate conditions, the successful migration around 50,000 years ago occurred during a less ideal climate period. The researchers argue that this ecological adaptability, possibly fueled by greater social contact and cultural exchange, was key to the success of modern humans beyond Africa.","link_original":"https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2025/06/250625111542.htm","status":2,"country":[],"sections":[{"id":154,"name":"Africa"}],"root_section":{"id":107,"name":"Life-friendly Earth"},"is_photo":true,"is_video":false,"is_large_font":false,"show_in_news_list":false,"url_to_show_in_news_list":"","location_filters":{"countries":[],"regions":[{"id":6,"name":"Africa"}]},"filters":[{"id":8,"name":"Enlightenment","badge_name":"Enlightenment","show_badge":false,"children":[{"id":27,"name":"Publications","badge_name":"Publication","show_badge":false,"children":[]}],"all_children":false,"all_children_ids":"9,10,27,11,12"}]},{"id":"1086041f-124c-449e-a842-745761f1a920","slug":"the-geoscience-information-society-gsis-post","created_at":"2026-02-23T10:03:39Z","views":61,"name":"The Geoscience Information Society (GSIS)","about":"Professional society for geoscience information professionals and librarians","text":"GSIS facilitates the exchange of information in the geosciences through cooperation among scientists, librarians, editors, cartographers, educators, and information professionals.\r\n\r\nThe GSIS is dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge and collaboration by creating a dynamic platform for information exchange across geoscience disciplines. While Pacific peoples prefer staying in their homes, the treaty recognizes the need for safe options with dignity and choice, aligning with the endorsed Pacific framework on climate mobility. Other technologies are being considered like ocean thermal energy conversion, which exploits the difference in temperature between deep and surface water.\n\n“In India, ocean thermal energy conversion plants have been successfully deployed to power desalination plants on islands which have a problem accessing drinking water. Lakshadweep Islands are situated around 300 km off the west coast of India. Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) exploits the difference in temperature between deep and surface waters to drive turbines and produce power,”marine energy expert Dr Winston D’Souza indicates.\n\nPlanning ahead, the aim is to involve more countries like South Korea, India and China, who are using marine energy, into the conformity assessment system. Contaminated groundwater poses severe consequences for human health, agriculture, and the economy. \r\nSeeing the Invisible not only provides a comprehensive overview of groundwater contaminants but also equips readers with tools for measurement, long-term monitoring, and prevention strategies. Recognizing the slow and insidious nature of groundwater pollution, the report emphasizes the economic, environmental, and public health benefits of prevention over remediation.\r\nThe report's recommendations encompass risk characterization, representative monitoring, and prevention measures. It advocates for groundwater planning, investments, and robust institutional frameworks as prerequisites for long-term sustainability. \r\nTraditionally neglected until costs become glaringly evident, groundwater quality management takes center stage in this report","link_original":"https://www.worldbank.org/en/topic/water/publication/seeing-the-invisible-a-strategic-report-on-groundwater-quality","status":2,"country":[{"id":240,"name":"United States of America","icon":""}],"sections":[{"id":142,"name":"Groundwater"}],"root_section":{"id":107,"name":"Life-friendly Earth"},"is_photo":false,"is_video":false,"is_large_font":false,"show_in_news_list":false,"url_to_show_in_news_list":"","location_filters":{"countries":[{"id":240,"name":"United States of America"}],"regions":[]},"filters":[]},{"id":"10eb6777-d2bf-45ab-9ef7-b4f654dfa73e","slug":"new-iucn-report-highlights-urgent-need-for-more-sustainable-blue-tourism-in-the-mediterranean-iucn-post","created_at":"2025-11-05T05:32:06.881922Z","views":25,"name":"Sustainable Blue Tourism in the Mediterranean: Trends, Challenges, and Policy Pathways - New IUCN report highlights urgent need for more sustainable blue tourism in the Mediterranean | IUCN","about":"Mediterranean Blue Tourism at a crossroads: €171 billion sector faces climate and environmental pressures.","text":"The new report Sustainable Blue Tourism in the Mediterranean: Trends, Challenges, and Policy Pathways underscores the vital economic importance of the coastal and maritime tourism sector in the region, while warning of mounting climate, environmental and social pressures that jeopardise its long-term viability. \n\nThe publication was coordinated by the IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation (IUCN Med), with the support of the Andalusian Institute for Research and Innovation in Tourism (IATUR) through the University of Málaga (UMA), and the support of Eco-union and the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI).\n\nUnless policies change, tourist arrivals are projected to keep rising, further exacerbating environmental and social pressures across the region.
