"text": "2023 marks the halfway point of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), but the United Nations (UN) recently described progress toward them as “woefully off track.” As part of an effort to refocus attention on these goals, the UN General Assembly is convening three high-level meetings (HLMs) on health: one on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response, one on universal health coverage (UHC), and one highlighting the fight against tuberculosis (TB). Yet, the success of these initiatives hinges on a deep understanding of how our existing health and social structures foster health equity in the context of these overarching goals – an insight to which robust health policy and systems research (HPSR) can make a major contribution.\nEvent recording is available on the website of HSG, the first international membership organization fully dedicated to promoting health systems research and knowledge translation",

"text": "In Montenegro, there are more than 1500 karst wonders identified. Đalovića cave, with more than 20 km, ranks as the longest in the region. In the Maganika massif, Iron Cave also ranks first but because of its length reaching 1100 m. Montenegro's history is also connected to caves as two very popular and visited sanctuaries, monasteries built in the cave - Ostrog and Dajbabe. In another speleo-archaeological site, cave Red Rock, 32 layers with a measured age of 180,000 years, is highly relevant in Europe.",

"about": "With eco-friendly pet products increasingly available in everything from toys to collars, it’s possible to find sustainable and recyclable materials repurposed into useful pet goods.",
"text": "Modern pet parents want safe, eco-friendly products for their furry companions. Luckily, many companies are now creating sustainable pet items—from toys to bedding. For example, eco-filled beds from brands like Harry Barker and P.L.A.Y. use recycled plastic bottles. Natural shampoos with eco-conscious packaging help reduce water pollution. Leashes and collars made of vegan leather or recycled materials, like those from EcoBark, combine sustainability with social good. Biodegradable poop bags and upcycled cat toys cut down on waste. Natural pet foods and biodegradable cat litter made from materials like corn or wood chips are healthier for pets and the planet. You can even DIY some items at home!",

"text": "Efficient water management is essential for agricultural sustainability, especially on islands where freshwater resources are limited and vulnerable. On Santa Cruz Island (Galápagos, Ecuador), the majority of the water supply originates from underground aquifers that face threats such as saltwater intrusion, contamination, and increasing agricultural and urban demand. This study aims to identify and prioritize watersheds with favorable conditions for sustainable water management focused on agriculture. A morphometric analysis of 24 watersheds was conducted, assessing characteristics such as shape, relief, and linear features to estimate erosion vulnerability and water availability. \r\n\r\nThe results enabled classification of watersheds according to their potential for water conservation and agricultural use. Five priority watersheds (SW15, SW22, SW19, SW1, and SW14) were identified as having favorable conditions for water retention and sustainable agricultural practices.",

In Parts 2 and 3, restoration of specific freshwater (marshes, forests, peatlands) and estuarine (tidal marshes, mangroves) wetlands are described. Part 4, From Theory to Practice, contains chapters describing performance standards to gauge success of projects and case studies describing small-scale and large-scale restoration projects of various freshwater and estuarine wetlands.",

"text": "The EU aims to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill, and despite increasing waste generation, the landfill rate fell from 23% to 17% between 2010 and 2022. During this period, total landfilled waste decreased by 21%. Household and similar waste showed the largest decline, while the amount of sorting residues more than doubled, reflecting the expansion of sorting and material recovery. Key waste categories sent to landfill include household waste, sorting residues and combustion waste. Most European countries reduced landfilling, with the most significant progress in Lithuania, Estonia, Slovenia, Latvia, Finland, Croatia and Iceland, which reduced landfilling by more than 40%. However, some countries made very limited progress.. Effective measures include landfill bans, taxes and incentives for recycling.",

Color arrows (Green, Gray, and Red) indicate the year-over-year trend comparison (Up, Stable, Down). Trends do not necessarily indicate a declining power as changes to the GFP formula can also account for this.\n\nFor the 2025 GFP review, a total of 145 world powers are considered.",

"text": "The State of Wildfires 2023–2024 report, led by Dr Matthew Jones (University of East Anglia) and published in Earth System Science Data, provides the first comprehensive global analysis of extreme wildfires, showing how the latest fire season was shaped by climate change and human factors.\n\nAccompanied by interactive maps and charts, the report visualises anomalies in fire count, burned area, emissions, fire size, and growth rate for 2023–2024 compared to data since 2002, allowing users to explore regional extremes and download datasets.\n\nGlobally, 3.9 million km² burned—slightly below average—but carbon emissions were 16% above normal (8.8 Gt CO₂), largely due to massive forest fires in Canada, where emissions were nine times higher than average. Major fires also devastated Greece, Brazil’s Amazon region, Hawaii, and Chile, causing widespread damage and displacement.",

"text": "The article explores how Earth’s future unfolds across vast temporal scales, moving from present-day climate pressures toward transformations driven by solar evolution, tectonic cycles, and atmospheric change. It emphasizes that the current biosphere, sustained by water, plate tectonics, and a balanced climate, is temporary within cosmic time. The piece highlights forthcoming thresholds — the rise of a future supercontinent, intensifying heat stress, and the gradual loss of oceans — while noting that near-term human activity may accelerate ecological decline through climate tipping processes. It underscores that long-range scenarios remain probabilistic rather than fixed. \n\nBy situating humanity as both a geological agent and a transient participant in deep time, the article invites reflection on responsibility, legacy, and the fragile window in which Earth remains a living world.",

"about": "This Day, observed annually on December 10, reminds the world that animals are sentient beings deserving respect, protection, and the same fundamental rights as humans.",
"text": "Marked by demonstrations and campaigns, it exposes exploitation and raises awareness of the suffering animals face. Animal sentience laws recognize that animals experience emotions such as joy and sorrow, promoting a shift from viewing them as property to beings worthy of care and respect. Protecting animal rights contributes to environmental health, reduces pollution, and helps maintain balanced ecosystems. Animal welfare ensures humane treatment, while legal recognition reinforces broader protection. Actions such as participating in events, spreading knowledge about animal sentience, and reducing consumption of animal products support the cause. Campaigns and initiatives further the goal of creating a world where all sentient beings are respected and protected.",
