"name": "Industrial Development Report 2026 | UNIDO",
"about": "Looking at the future of industrialization",
"text": "The world economy stands at a critical turning point. The current development trajectory is increasingly unsustainable, and global shocks, from the COVID-19 pandemic to the climate crisis and ongoing conflicts, continue to reverse years of development gains, especially in the most vulnerable regions. The prospects for achieving the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development have never been bleaker. UNIDO projections suggest that if current trends persist, more than 3 billion people will remain in poverty by 2050, including 700 million in extreme poverty. Over 300 million will continue suffering from undernourishment. \n\nThe 2026 edition of the IDR explores how industrial development is evolving in response to rapid global changes. It examines how future industries may differ fundamentally from those of the past, and provides practical guidance for developing countries on building sustainable, inclusive and resilient industries.",

"text": "The word ‘health’ is generally associated with physical health and symptoms; more rarely it is mental health\nassociation, but Better Up reveals and emphasizes that there are more dimensions in health. Other types of health are less popular or visible, but still have a big influence on people’s health overall. Social health is considered to be one of other dimensions.\nInteractions with people, connections with them, the ability to form secure relationships with others and their quality are included in social health. For example, good feeling after meeting with a friend, homesickness or sudden chat with a stranger. More information, details and the influence on physical health are presented in the article.",

Raised on a ranch that taught her resourcefulness and respect for nature, she built her eponymous brand—founded in 2015—around sustainability and timeless design. Hearst gained global recognition for staging fashion’s first carbon-neutral runway show and for transforming Chloé into the first luxury brand to achieve B Corp certification during her tenure as creative director (2020–2023). Her work explores themes like regeneration, clean energy, and women’s empowerment, proving that fashion can drive meaningful change. Now focused on expanding her own label, Hearst continues to redefine luxury as conscious, responsible, and enduring.",

In the Ordovician, coral reefs flourished, and giant cephalopods like Cameroceras became top predators. The Silurian saw jawed fish evolve and the first vascular plants begin colonizing land. By the Devonian - “Age of Fishes” - forests emerged, and pioneering tetrapods like Tiktaalik ventured onto land. The Carboniferous brought vast swamp forests, oxygen-rich air, and gigantic arthropods like Arthropleura and dragonflies the size of hawks. These ancient ecosystems laid the foundation for modern vertebrate life, ending with the Permian and the greatest extinction event in Earth's history.",

"text": "The Great Blue Hole, off the coast of Belize is a diver’s paradise and a natural monument, the most famous blue hole in the world. Originally it was a limestone cave that started to form about 150,000 years ago. Gradually the water level rose as the glacial period ended and the caves were flooded and its roof collapsed, thus forming this unique hole. The hole was made popular by French explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau who declared it “one of the top ten dive sites in the world.” Looking from above, the dark blue color of the hole signifies that it has a great depth, especially compared to the shallow waters nearby.\r\nIts deepest point lies at 124 m. The hole has an almost perfect circular shape and it is 300 m wide. The Blue Hole is well-known in the world of recreational diving enthusiasts, for whom this place has them all: clear waters and a variety of flora and fauna as you can meet here nurse sharks, Caribbean reef sharks and bull sharks.\r\nSource: Belize Tourist Board",

"text": "The conference \"Translating the EU Green Deal into local action,\" hosted as part of the Belgian presidency of the Council of the EU, gathered 550 mayors from across Europe to discuss strategies for implementing the Green Deal at the local level, emphasizing the crucial role of local governments in driving sustainability initiatives and fostering collaboration. Insights from the event underscored the importance of local dealmakers and collaborative efforts in realizing the Green Deal's ambitions, highlighting the need for clear communication, transparency, and community engagement. Overall, the conference highlighted the imperative for unity among local governments to turn the aspirations of the European Green Deal into tangible actions, with the Intelligent Cities Challenge (ICC) committed to supporting this collective effort towards a greener future.",

"text": "Soaring housing costs, mortgage stress, and a housing crisis compounded by increasing immigration and population growth are pushing councils to view tiny houses as a viable, quick, and affordable solution, especially in the face of escalating homelessness. However, Australia's planning and housing regulations pose obstacles to their permanent use. Some local councils are easing restrictions, recognizing the global movement promoting more sustainable homes, and recent policy changes, such as in the Shire of Esperance and Mount Alexander Shire Council, signify a shift towards embracing tiny houses as a means to address the pressing need for affordable housing in the country. Tiny houses, offering a cost-effective and speedy construction process, contribute to environmental sustainability with downsized living spaces, off-grid options, and a reduced ecological footprint, making them a potential solution to Australia's housing challenges.",

"text": "Stromatolites, ancient microbial structures once dominant in early Earth's oceans, are now rare and mostly limited to extreme environments. A major discovery was made on Sheybarah Island (Red Sea, Saudi Arabia), where living shallow-marine stromatolites were found in open-marine intertidal to subtidal zones. These structures are shaped by microbial sediment accretion and lithification, forming up to 15 cm tall domes. Environmental conditions include extreme temperatures, light tidal currents, and oligotrophic waters. Microbial analysis revealed diverse communities of photoautotrophs and heterotrophs. A key finding is the presence of reticulated filaments in photic conditions—previously only known from dark cave systems. This discovery is the first of its kind in the Middle East and holds value for geology, geobiology, astrobiology, conservation.",

It can be used to build in places where resources are scarce or harsh, such as deserts or other planets. It is a revolutionary invention that could change the future of construction and sustainability.\n\nIt is also known as or related to bioconcrete, bacterial concrete, self-healing concrete, biogenic concrete, organic concrete, green concrete, microbial concrete, ecological concrete, smart concrete, and sustainable concrete.",

Littoral ecosystems are generally located next to lakes, seas, pounds and rivers and stretch from the shoreline to partial submergence. The longest littoral ecosystem in Europe is located along the coast of Greece, being the vastest areas for species settlement. This fact makes the Greek seas and the north-eastern Mediterranean littoral zone ecosystems one of the most biodiverse marine zones of the entire basin. Littoral ecosystems require plants that can survive being partially or completely submerged under water.",

If progress remains at the pace observed since 2016, low hunger at global level may not be reached until 2160.\n\nSix countries have levels of hunger considered alarming, indicating widespread human misery, undernourishment, and malnutrition. Somalia, Yemen, Chad, and Madagascar are the countries with the highest 2024 GHI scores.",
