"name": "Loughborough University: Research shows how coffee waste could be used to clean contaminated water",
"about": "Published in Biomass and Bioenergy and Clean Technologies, research publications from experts at Loughborough University showcase how coffee waste could be used effectively to filter heavy metals, such as lead, copper and zinc, from water.",
"text": "Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages worldwide. In 2021–22, global coffee consumption exceeded 176 million bags (around 60kg per bag), marking a notable rise from approximately 167 million bags in the previous year. \n\nThe growing global consumption generates substantial waste, particularly spent coffee grounds (SCGs), a byproduct rich in organic matter. SCGs are porous, plant-derived materials that have excellent potential as adsorbents that could prevent coffee from going to waste. \n\nThe study by researchers at Loughborough University demonstrated that the raw coffee waste can be used directly without any further processing to remove heavy metals (eg. copper and zinc) from water at low metal concentrations.\n\nBy using biochar to filter water, the findings have created a low-cost and eco-friendly way to clean water and reuse coffee waste. This practice supports the circular economy and can be scaled up for real-world water treatment.",

"about": "The Sustainable Housing Guidelines aim to support the development of housing that addresses global \nclimate change and local sustainable development priorities.",
"text": "Climate change and local development needs make it essential for built environments to support sustainability. The WWF defines sustainability as achieving a Human Development Index (HDI) above 0.8 and an Ecological Footprint (EF) below 1.8 global hectares (gha) per person. EF measures land and sea needed to sustain consumption in food, shelter, transport, goods, and services. HDI assesses health, education, and income. Zambia meets the EF target (0.8 gha) but not HDI (0.448). Housing can help meet both by promoting environmental (e.g. energy, water), economic (e.g. transport, local economy), and social (e.g. access, health) goals. Integrating sustainability requires clear objectives and structured processes like Sustainability Integration Plans, applied throughout building life cycles.",

"text": "The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) helps governments and communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from crises by providing technical and financial support to keep children in school. GPE promotes coordination between humanitarian actors and development partners, and when working with governments isn’t possible, it supports the parts of the education system closest to children to ensure learning continues.\n\nGPE encourages long-term education planning to keep children in school during emergencies and allows partners to adapt grants for rapid response, including temporary classrooms, teacher salaries, school meals, and supplies. Through partnerships with global and national stakeholders, GPE strengthens the resilience of education systems, supports inclusive access for refugees, and ensures that children affected by conflict or crisis are protected, continue learning, and gain stability amid disruption.",

"about": "A clear, accessible primer that explains 19 key AI terms — from neural networks and transformers to hallucinations and synthetic data — to help readers understand modern artificial intelligence.",
"text": "The article introduces 19 essential concepts that shape modern artificial intelligence, offering simple explanations for both foundational and emerging ideas. It begins with core terms such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, neural networks and models, outlining how systems are trained, how they generalize and how they perform inference. It then explains influential innovations like embeddings, transformers and foundation models that make today’s AI systems flexible and powerful. \r\n\r\nThe article also covers challenges and controversies, including bias, hallucinations and the difficulty of interpreting model behavior. More advanced topics — reinforcement learning, mechanistic interpretability, synthetic data and reasoning — highlight where research is heading. The piece provides a concise roadmap to understanding how contemporary AI works and why these concepts matter.",

"text": "The world has finally awoken to the reality of climate breakdown and ecological collapse. Now we must face up to its primary cause. Capitalism demands perpetual expansion, which is devastating the living world. There is only one solution that will lead to meaningful and immediate change: degrowth.\n\nIf we want to have a shot at halting the crisis, we need to slow down and restore the balance. We need to change how we see nature and our place in it, shifting from a philosophy of domination and extraction to one that’s rooted in reciprocity and regeneration. We need to evolve beyond the dogmas of capitalism to a new system that’s fit for the twenty-first century.\n\nBut what about jobs? What about health? What about progress? This book tackles these questions and offers an inspiring vision for what a post-capitalist economy could look like. An economy that’s more just, more caring, and more fun. An economy that will lift us out of our current crisis.",

It envisions a just, zero waste world built on respect for ecological limits and community rights, where people are free from the burden of toxic pollution, and resources are sustainably conserved, not burned or dumped.\n\nGAIA aims to power a transition away from our current linear and extractive economy and towards a circular system that supports people’s right to a safe and healthy environment. This entails fighting pollution and building regenerative solutions in cities through local campaigns, shifts in policy and finance, research and communication initiatives, and movement building. GAIA works on 4 primary points of intervention: incineration, zero waste, plastic, and climate.",

"text": "As concerns rise about the achievability of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, an opportunity is emerging to promote the circular economy as the solution of the future – and to put the concept at the heart of action on everything from tackling climate change to reducing poverty. \n\nThis research paper has been written with the express intention of contributing ideas to this emerging SDG reset. The authors make the case for accelerating and deepening the shift to circular economic models, taking into account the potential trade-offs and unintended consequences that disruptive innovations may bring. The paper underlines the vital role that expansion of the circular economy could play in supporting the SDGs and in shaping what comes after them. On the latter, specifically, the authors present a policy blueprint for development of the circular economy to 2050.",

"about": "Seaside, Florida, recognized as a quintessential \"New Urbanist\" town, significantly contributed to the prominence of 30A while setting a benchmark for the area's enduring legacy of urban planning.",
"text": "Seaside, a town in Florida founded in 1981 on New Urbanist principles, has significantly influenced global urban planning. The town's conception by Robert and Daryl Davis, guided by a master plan created by Andres Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, has set a trend in rethinking urban design. Their approach, focusing on building walkable neighborhoods, has inspired a worldwide movement. The town envisioned as a living laboratory for sustainable design and education, materialized into the Seaside Institute, a non-profit organization. The institute is a collaborative platform, drawing visionaries, experts, and thought leaders from various fields to create better communities globally. The Seaside Institute has played a crucial role in influencing urban designs globally through its effective models and successful practices.",

A critical imperative is to improve the efficiency of existing flood protection systems through integrated flood risk management methods. \r\nThe primary objective is to present the results of significant research concerning riverbed transformations, flood risk management strategies, and the scientific and methodological foundation for assessing and mapping flood hazards and risks.\r\nNotable achievements include the formulation of methodological provisions and recommendations for complex channel regulation and the safe passage of high floods. \r\nThe paper further outlines the implementation of Flood Directive 2007/60/EC in Ukraine, showcasing a paradigm shift towards integrated flood risk management.\r\nThe Flood Risk Management Strategy for Carpathian River basins is highlighted, aligned with contemporary global standards",

"text": "One possibility is to equip the natural material with new properties – in technical terms: functionalities – and transform it into magnetic, waterproof or electricity-generating wood, for instance.\n\nA team led by fungal researcher Francis Schwarze from Empa’s Cellulose & Wood Materials lab in St. Gallen is currently pursuing an idea for a new type of composite material based on hardwood: luminous wood. In addition to applications in technical fields, the luminous wood could be processed into designer furniture or jewelry.\n\nSome fungus species produce the natural substance luciferin, which is stimulated to glow in a two-stage enzymatic process. Wood permeated by fungal threads therefore emits a green light.",
