"name": "The evolution of shared e-scooter systems in Europe: Governance, impacts, and future directions | by Sara Mecatti for European Comission",
"about": "A comparative study of Paris, Berlin, Stockholm, and Brussels shows that shared e-scooters can support sustainable urban mobility, but their success depends on clear regulations, effective enforcement, dedicated parking solutions, and strong coordination",
"text": "Shared e-scooters have quickly become part of the urban mobility landscape in many European cities, offering a flexible and low-emission solution for short trips. They support broader sustainability goals by complementing walking, cycling, and public transport, particularly for first- and last-mile travel. However, their rapid expansion has also created challenges related to safety, improper parking, street clutter, and the management of public space, prompting cities to adopt different regulatory approaches.\r\n\r\nA comparison of four European capitals—Paris, Berlin, Stockholm, and Brussels—illustrates a wide spectrum of governance strategies. Paris adopted the most restrictive approach, introducing a citywide ban on shared e-scooters after rising accidents and public dissatisfaction. Berlin has pursued a gradual integration strategy, focusing on designated parking areas, geofencing, and cooperation with operators, though its efforts are constrained by a limited national legal framework.",

Lakes also play a key role in maintaining biodiversity, offering a habitat for countless species of fish, plants, and wildlife. Beyond their ecological significance, lakes contribute to climate regulation by keeping the planet cool, absorbing the floodwater and storing carbon. Additionally, they provide recreational and economic opportunities, attracting tourism, fishing, and other activities that support local communities. But lakes are affected by a combination of overuse, pollution and climate change. We need to act now.\r\n\r\nIn 2024, the UN held a special event to discuss the importance of conservation and sustainable development of lakes and establish the World Lake Day on August 27. The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) will facilitate the observance of the Day.",

"text": "Access to water is crucial for all aspects of life. Anthropogenic global warming is projected to disrupt the hydrological cycle, leading to water scarcity. However, the timing and hotspot regions of unprecedented water scarcity are unknown. Using a probabilistic framework and a large ensemble of climate simulations, authors attribute the timing and likelihood of DZD events to human influence. Many regions, including major reservoirs, may face high risk of DZD by the 2020s and 2030s. Despite model and scenario uncertainties, consistent DZD hotspots emerge across the Mediterranean, southern Africa, and parts of North America. Urban populations are particularly vulnerable at the 1.5 °C warming level. The length of time between successive DZD events is shorter than the duration of DZD, limiting recovery periods and exacerbating water scarcity risks. Therefore, more proactive water strategies are urgently needed to avoid severe societal impacts of DZD.",

"about": "Plans to address climate change rely on massively scaling up clean, solar electricity, but recycling solar panels can be a challenge, Associated Press informs",
"text": "While the great majority of worn and damaged panels are still dumped in landfills, North America’s first utility-scale solar panel recycling plant has opened in Yuma to address what founders of We Recycle Solar call a “tsunami” of solar waste. The panels, stacked and banded, come here from the company’s main collection warehouse in Hackettstown, New Jersey, plus six other locations across the country.\nThese panels can be reused, said Adam Saghei, CEO of We Recycle Solar, and there is a market for them — clients around the world who search for refurbished panels for their affordability. The Yuma facility, he says, is like “your local thrift store that looks to upcycle.”",

"about": "The Ice Memory project preserves global ice cores in Antarctica for future scientific study and international collaboration.",
"text": "The project, inaugurated at Concordia station in Antarctica, stores glacier ice cores from around the world, including the Andes, Alps, Svalbard, Caucasus, and Pamir Mountains, at -50 °C, allowing them to escape global warming without technical intervention. This initiative ensures future scientists can analyze past atmospheric composition, chemicals, dust, minerals, and even DNA from the ice. For example, researchers in decades to come could measure concentrations of substances, such as pesticides, from 2026 and reconstruct historical data that would otherwise be lost. The project supports multiple scientific fields: biology, chemistry, geology - and relies on emerging analytical technologies that can detect elemental and isotopic composition at extremely fine scales. Ice Memory also demonstrates multilateral cooperation, inviting all nations with glaciers to contribute and offering a unique space in Antarctica where scientists can collaborate beyond political tensions.",

"text": "A research team led by Professor Eske Willerslev from the University of Copenhagen and the University of Cambridge has recovered DNA from 214 known human pathogens in over 1,300 prehistoric individuals from Eurasia. This marks the largest-ever study on the history of infectious diseases and was recently published in the journal Nature.\n\nThe study reveals that zoonotic diseases—those passed from animals to humans—date back at least 6,500 years and became more widespread around 5,000 years ago. Findings suggest that the shift to farming, animal domestication, and major human migrations played a critical role in spreading these infections.\n\nAmong the discoveries is the oldest known genetic trace of the plague bacterium Yersinia pestis, found in a 5,500-year-old sample. The data also suggest that early disease outbreaks may have contributed to population collapses, migration patterns, and human genetic adaptation.",

"about": "The Groundwater Directive (GWD) (2006/118/EC) is a European Union directive that sets out requirements for the protection of groundwater against pollution and deterioration based on the principle of prevention",
"text": "The prevention principle is meaning that Member States (MS) must take steps to prevent groundwater pollution from occurring in the first place, and therefore the GWD sets out two main requirements for groundwater protection: \r\n1) MS must assess the quality of all groundwater within their territory. This assessment must identify any groundwater that is at risk of pollution or deterioration;\r\n2) MS must take measures to prevent and control groundwater pollution. For example, regulating the use of land and water; 3) controlling industrial and agricultural activities; 3) managing groundwater abstraction; 4) specific requirements for the protection of groundwater from pollution by certain pollutants, such as nitrates, pesticides, etc.\r\nThe GWD is an important part of the EU's water policy and an important tool for protecting groundwater in the EU. The most recent update was adopted in 2020. It is helping to ensure that groundwater is available for future generations in a clean and healthystate",

"about": "The Geographical article by R. Goergen states that the global drinking water supply faces risks, prompting more efficient desalination plants to convert saltwater into fresh water.",
"text": "After nearly a decade of debate, the California Coastal Commission rejected a permit for a large seawater-desalination plant near Huntington Beach on May 12, 2022. This project, proposed in 2013, sharply divided experts, politicians, and activists. California faced a severe drought, worsened by record-low water reservoir levels. The plant aimed to generate 190 million liters of drinking water daily, a prospect welcomed by supporters, including California's governor, Gavin Newsom. However, environmentalists argued that marine life would suffer due to the project's impact on seawater. Desalination is seen as a crucial technology to bridge the impending 40% global deficit in drinking water by 2030, although it poses environmental and efficiency challenges. Promising advancements in desalination technologies are being developed, aiming to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impacts.",

"text": "The study examines the adjudication of water rights in international rivers. It characterizes allocation rules that formalize focal principles for addressing water disputes in a basic model. Central to the analysis is a family of geometric rules that implement concatenated transfers downstream. These rules can be seen as formalizing Limited Territorial Sovereignty, as suggested in the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development. The rules are applied to the case of the Nile River, which has a long history of disputes between downstream and upstream nations.\r\n\r\nThe aim of this paper is to provide a basic model for the adjudication of riparian rights. In the model, agents (to be naturally interpreted as countries, although they could also be considered as regions or towns) are located along a river with a linear structure. For each agent, there is a river inflow from tributaries.",
