"name": "Characterizing the trend towards Equipment-as-a-Service business models in B2B industries I by Ornella Benedettini for Elsevier (2025)",
"about": "This study analyzes the adoption of Equipment-as-a-Service (EaaS) models, highlighting 24 characteristics and suggesting directions for future research and practical applications.",
"text": "EaaS (Equipment-as-a-Service) business models are gaining attention from industrial machinery manufacturers due to their potential for competitive advantage and environmental sustainability. By offering equipment as a service instead of a product, EaaS helps reduce environmental impact and aligns with growing sustainability pressures. This study fills a gap in the literature by systematically reviewing EaaS adoption in B2B industries, identifying 24 key characteristics organized into seven themes and four dimensions: value drivers, economics, business relationships, and enablers. The findings present six research propositions and highlight areas for further study, providing actionable insights for manufacturers seeking to improve profitability and sustainability through EaaS.",

"text": "At the beginning of the SUPRIM project, there was no global consensus on the assessment of impacts from the use of abiotic resources (minerals and metals), in life cycle impact assessment (LCIA). Unlike with other impact categories such as global warming, there is not just one single, explicitly agreed-upon problem arising from the use of abiotic resources. The topic is complex and new methods are still being developed, all with different perspectives and views on resource use. For this reason, the SUPRIM project initiated a consensus process together with members from the research and mining communities, with the aim to obtain an understanding of different stakeholders’ views and concerns regarding potential issues resulting from the use of resources.",

"text": "The energy transition seeks to reduce dependence on fossil energy carriers but requires substantial material inputs that may cause adverse impacts related to mineral resources. The UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative Task Force on Mineral Resources recommends six methods to assess different impact pathways of resource use. The study evaluates these methods in the context of infrastructure development under Germany’s energy transition across four possible transition paths. Projected material demand until 2045 includes up to 407 million metric tons of sand and gravel, 144 million metric tons of iron, and 171 million metric tons of crude oil. However, the materials with the highest absolute masses are not identified as hotspots by any method. No transition path can be clearly favored, as each is influenced by different resource aspects. Although some methods indicate similar hotspots, all rely on static characterization factors.",

"about": "When imagining how a green transition can take place, the relationship between economic growth and environmental sustainability is commonly viewed in 2 ways: As ‘green growth,’ where the two can be mutually supporting, and as ‘degrowth,’ where they cannot",
"text": "The two are considered mutually exclusive, internally coherent, and competing eco-political paradigms. This article conceptually analyses the literature and maps standpoints within the two positions along nine dimensions covering national institutions, world order, and scientific cosmology. The authors find that there are substantial disagreements within as well as agreements between green growth and degrowth. In consequence, the authors argue that the literature is caught in a false binary. To constructively move the debate forward, it is proposed to give up the paradigmatic and polarised approach and instead embrace a multidimensional plurality of imagined growth futures.",

"text": "Multinational corporations face criticism for involvement in environmental conflicts and human rights violations. Many respond with voluntary human rights and ESG initiatives to reduce impacts and enhance their public image. These actions relate to disputed economic development theories claiming foreign direct investment fosters growth, human rights, and environmental well-being in developing countries. To examine this, the article presents the largest statistical analysis on multinational corporations in environmental conflicts, using data from the Global Atlas of Environmental Justice covering over 3,300 conflicts and 5,500 companies. Results show companies, mainly from the Global North, are heavily involved in conflicts in the Global South. Conflicts with foreign companies often involve commodities prone to ecologically unequal exchange, cause greater socioeconomic impacts, and have worse outcomes than cases without foreign firms.",

"about": "Circular fashion demands more than eco-consciousness—consumers balance emotional, functional, and identity-driven values when justifying higher costs, shaping how intentions turn into real sustainable purchases.",
"text": "Circular fashion transforms fast fashion into long-lasting, sustainable pieces, but higher costs remain a barrier. To understand why consumers choose such products, researchers examined consumption values through two lenses: sufficiency (what can help) and necessity (what must be present). Surveying 272 participants, the study found emotional value consistently drives both willingness to pay a premium and purchase intentions. Functional and environmental values are indispensable for making purchases, while epistemic and identity values also shape decisions. Unlike conventional views that treat values as interchangeable, this dual perspective reveals that some cannot be substituted. By combining Structural Equation Modeling and Necessary Condition Analysis, the study provides understanding of circular fashion adoption. Insights highlight how retailers and policymakers can encourage consumers to bridge the gap between sustainable attitudes and actual buying behavior.",

"text": "However, it has significant environmental drawbacks including large volumes of wastewater, greenhouse gas emissions, and toxic air pollutants, primarily due to high energy and water consumption as well as the use of chemical additives. In addition, the primary depletion method after multistage hydraulic fracturing can yield oil recovery factors of only a few percent. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop cleaner and more sustainable methods for shale oil recovery. Currently, mainly some huff-and-puff enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods without fracturing shale oil samples are being investigated. In this study, we managed to successfully investigate the feasibility of CO2 and hydrocarbon gas (HCG) injection as a cleaner and greener method for ultra-tight shale oil development without fracturing through core flooding experiments combined with X-ray scanning in a continuous injection mode.",

"text": "Efficient water management is essential for agricultural sustainability, especially on islands where freshwater resources are limited and vulnerable. On Santa Cruz Island (Galápagos, Ecuador), the majority of the water supply originates from underground aquifers that face threats such as saltwater intrusion, contamination, and increasing agricultural and urban demand. This study aims to identify and prioritize watersheds with favorable conditions for sustainable water management focused on agriculture. A morphometric analysis of 24 watersheds was conducted, assessing characteristics such as shape, relief, and linear features to estimate erosion vulnerability and water availability. \r\n\r\nThe results enabled classification of watersheds according to their potential for water conservation and agricultural use. Five priority watersheds (SW15, SW22, SW19, SW1, and SW14) were identified as having favorable conditions for water retention and sustainable agricultural practices.",

Despite their importance, these subterranean environments remain largely overlooked in environmental governance and sustainability discussions. In response to this gap, the International Union of Speleology launched the initiative for an International Day of Caves and Karst, following the success of the 2021 International Year of Caves and Karst. As of 2025, the proposal has gained support from over 70 national institutions, international organizations, and UNESCO site managers, as well as governments and Indigenous nations. A formally recognized this Day aims to mainstream caves and karst into global environmental agendas and strengthen science-policy interfaces.",

"about": "Blockchain technology is emerging as one of the most transformative forces to have ever reshaped supply chain management, with unique transparency, security, and efficiency.",
"text": "This paper reviews the literature on blockchain technology and applications in core industries such as transportation, manufacturing, food and beverages, and healthcare. At its core, blockchain deploys distributed ledger technology to provide tamper-proof, secure record-keeping, enhancing traceability and provenance verification for complex supply chains. Smart contracts, IoT connectivity, and decentralized financial services allow blockchain to address its most critical challenges, incl. counterfeiting, supplier management, and the enforcement of sustainable and responsible sourcing practices. \n\nHowever, widespread adoption of blockchain in supply chains is inhibited by severe issues like scalability, interoperability, regulatory uncertainty, and lack of standardization. Additionally, the environmental impact of blockchain, i.e., the energy-intensive proof-of-work mechanisms is examined, along with potential strategies for mitigation.",

"about": "This study aims to evaluate public perceptions of space tourism's legal concerns—liability, safety, and rights—in an emerging market context (India), providing evidence for regulatory formulation amid 2025's global shifts.",
"text": "Space tourism is rapidly evolving into a commercial reality, driven by private entities like SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Virgin Galactic, with over 50 suborbital flights recorded in 2025 alone and record-breaking orbital launches exceeding 278 successes globally. \n\nThis study illuminates public apprehensions in India's space tourism nascent phase, revealing awareness deficits and demands for robust frameworks amid 2025's transformative events—from China's global push to ESA's commitments. By integrating empirical data with lit, it substantiates calls for authoritative, multipolar reforms prioritizing safety, equity, and sustainability. Proactive Indian/international action—e.g., UNOOSA-led hybrids—will democratize space, mitigating risks for inclusive growth in a 278-launch era. Future expansions can refine these insights, ensuring space tourism benefits humanity equitably.\n\nhttps://doi.org/10.1016/j.aets.2025.12.004",

"about": "The paper by M. Silva-Pérez proves that solar power tower systems, also known as central receiver systems, exhibit exceptional efficiency in achieving high temperatures due to their ability to attain high concentration ratios",
"text": "This paper published in “Advances in Concentrating Solar Thermal Research and Technology” explores the integration of solar power towers with high-temperature cycles, emphasizing their potential to enhance the overall efficiency of solar radiation-to-electricity conversion. By surpassing the limitations of sub-critical Rankine cycle-based Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plants, these advancements aim to reduce the levelized cost of energy (LCOE), provided the efficiency gains outweigh increased costs related to specialized equipment and materials.\nWhile solar power towers can reach operating temperatures exceeding 1000°C, certain technological barriers persist, necessitating resolution before widespread adoption. Additionally, the concept of decoupled solar combined cycles, involving a high-temperature topping cycle feeding a thermal energy storage system, presents an incremental technology development to enhance the efficiency of concentrated solar thermal (CST) plants",

"name": "Groundwater Gains in Arizona Highlight Importance of Sustainable Water Management Amid Climate Risks | By Charlotte A. for ScienceFolks",
"about": "A combination of water management practices has contributed to notable groundwater gains in Central Arizona despite the region dealing with long-term water stress, according to a new study.",
"text": "Since 1980, Central Arizona has significantly improved groundwater levels through policies encouraging the use of Colorado River surface water for irrigation and aquifer recharge. The Central Arizona Project aqueduct delivers this water, which has helped replenish depleted aquifers despite ongoing drought and water stress. From 1989 to 2019, about 10.5 cubic kilometers of groundwater were banked through these policies, plus an additional 14.2 cubic kilometers from incidental irrigation seepage—totaling nearly 25 cubic kilometers, five times the annual water demand of key agricultural areas. This conjunctive management of surface and groundwater proves effective but faces risks as climate change causes reduced Colorado River flows and shrinking reservoirs. The study highlights the urgency of strategic groundwater banking, maximizing recharge during wet periods, and adapting water policies amid future climate uncertainties.",

Experts say Fukushima’s nuclear site was safely evacuated; no radiation leaks have been reported. The plant is inactive, with robust tsunami defenses. Scientists confirm this was a megathrust quake—among the largest since 2011’s Japan quake—caused by subduction at the Pacific-Okhotsk plate boundary. Tsunami waves up to 4m were recorded; alerts reached Japan, Hawaii, and Latin America. Experts emphasize rising sea levels may worsen future tsunamis. Early warnings worked well, but caution is urged due to ongoing waves and aftershocks.",

"name": "Some planets might home brew their own water I by By Javier Barbuzano for Science News",
"about": "The study shows that hydrogen reacting with interior minerals can create abundant water inside planets.",
"text": "In lab experiments, scientists recreated extreme conditions by blasting olivine with lasers in hydrogen, causing hydrogen to pull oxygen from the minerals and form water. This could explain why some close-orbiting exoplanets have thick water layers without receiving water from external sources. Previously, researchers thought such planets formed far from their stars and later migrated inward, but local reactions between hydrogen and minerals may produce water directly. The experiments yielded far more water than expected, with part of the rock turning entirely into water and metal. This suggests real planets could contain 5% to 28% water by mass, forming ocean worlds or hycean worlds depending on conditions. The results also imply that similar reactions may have occurred on early Earth, creating a primitive water reservoir distinct from the water delivered later by comets and asteroids.",
