"name": "Ecological insights of dryland wetlands for climate resilience and its challenges in Sub-Saharan Africa | by Simeneh Gedefaw Abate and others for Springer",
"about": "Dryland-wetlands in Sub-Saharan Africa are vital oases for biodiversity, water regulation, and climate resilience, yet face growing threats from climate change and human pressures, highlighting the urgent need for conservation and sustainable management.",
"text": "Sub-Saharan Africa, with its extensive dryland regions, is highly vulnerable to climate change impacts. The sub-Saharan wetlands are stunning ecosystems in combating climate change, where there is insufficient vegetation. Hence, Dryland-wetlands (DW) in sub-Saharan Africa are oases and pivotal for biodiversity, water management, and climate resilience. The face of threats is increasing due to anthropogenic pressures and climate change. These wetlands, found in arid and semi-arid regions with low and irregular precipitation, are vital for sustaining diverse species and providing essential ecosystem services such as water purification and carbon sequestration. Despite their critical role, DW are under severe threat of overuse, land degradation, and climate variability. This review evaluates the ecological functions of dryland-wetlands, their benefits, including support for biodiversity and water regulation, and the substantial challenges.",

"text": "This book includes 5 chapters that explore various aspects of ecological footprint analysis. \n\nChapter 1 provides a platform that relates and compares principles oriented towards reducing environmental urban impacts through the analysis of urban form and empirical knowledge about the applicability of ecological footprint as a tool for urban planning and design. \n\nChapter 2 focuses on the societal need to keep cities livable and sustainable through appropriate waste management. \n\nChapter 3 illustrates how city authorities and residents can better understand their rate of dependence upon and impact on the environment at various scales, realize their vulnerability to overseas environmental changes, and suggest local action or policy guidelines that may increase their urban sustainability. \n\nChapter 4 explores means for reducing the lifecycle ecological footprint of residential buildings. \n\nChapter 5 includes an ecological footprint analysis of jatropha biodiesel production at low scale.",

It measures the ecological assets that a given population or product requires to produce the natural resources it consumes and to absorb its waste, especially carbon emissions.\nThe Ecological Footprint tracks the use of productive surface areas. Typically these areas are: cropland, grazing land, fishing grounds, built-up land, forest area, and carbon demand on land.\nOn the supply side, a city, state or nation’s biocapacity represents the productivity of its ecological assets. These areas, especially if left unharvested, can also serve to absorb the waste we generate, especially our carbon emissions from burning fossil fuel.",

It contrasts this with biocapacity, the available productive area. The video highlights that humanity uses 1.5 planets' worth of resources annually, leading to \"Earth Overshoot Day.\" It compares ecological footprints and biocapacities of different countries like Canada, the United States, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, showing how consumption varies. The video emphasizes that global consumption is uneven and inefficient, with wealthier populations having larger footprints. "text": "By focusing on the eco-social policy discourses of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the World Bank, this book provides a comprehensive analysis of how and to what extent these influential international organisations integrate environmental and social concerns and promote an integrated eco-social policy perspective. While the OECD and the World Bank promote crucial elements of eco-social policy integration, the book argues that they fall short of pushing toward a social-ecological transformation within global governance that profoundly focuses on the decommodification of nature and labour. \n\nDrawing on different concepts, including Polanyi's notion of the double movement, it shows how there are partly contradictory policy perspectives on eco-social policy integration in both organisations, which eventually stabilise the existing capitalist mode of production, albeit with green conditions.",

"text": "In 2026, eco-friendly packaging has shifted from a marketing trend to a core business necessity, combining sustainability with design and functionality. Brands are adopting innovative materials like molded pulp, seaweed films, mycelium, and plant-based composites that biodegrade quickly, reduce waste, and even regenerate ecosystems. Circular design systems, mono-material packaging, and smart technologies such as digital traceability and AI optimization are helping companies minimize environmental impact while improving consumer experience. Packaging now communicates transparency and accountability through clear labels, carbon footprint data, and verified certifications, while design trends emphasize natural colors, textures, botanical illustrations, and storytelling that connect consumers to the environmental benefits of their choices. From minimal ink and handcrafted aesthetics to ocean-positive materials and locally sourced resources, these innovations integrate sustainability.",
