"text": "This study draws on knowledge from around 50 public, private and academic-sector stakeholders to explore the implications of the current national strategy on the biomass sector. This has been set by the UK’s National Energy System Operator (NESO) who have identified that biomass “provides a renewable low carbon power source” that can be used as dispatchable generation to help meet demand during times of low wind and solar output”, contributing to the delivery of a more resilient energy supply. However, where carbon capture and storage (CCS) is installed to create a “negative emissions” BECCS system, NESO suggest that higher load factors would be desirable to “maximise carbon removal from the atmosphere”.\n\nThis study has established that bioenergy supply chains already store energy over prolonged periods, and that there is potential to make use of this characteristic to address the seasonal variations in wind and solar renewables output that affect electricity, heat and gas markets.",

"text": "The ambitious solar space farm project, proposed by UK-based technology firm Space Solar, aims to be operational by 2035, contributing to Britain's future energy supply. Consisting of a 2km-long array of solar panels in orbit, the space farm would transmit energy to Earth using a system akin to mobile phone signals. The project, deemed economically viable due to innovations in reusable space launches, could significantly impact net-zero goals, using half the land area of terrestrial solar farms and one-tenth of offshore wind farms while producing 13 times more renewable energy. Space Solar aims to deliver 20% of Earth's energy supply using 600 satellites, supported by £6 million from the UK government for space solar research and an additional £5 million for the international CASSIOPeiA project exploring space-based solar power.",

"text": "Non-animal test methods provide humane, cost-effective alternatives in laboratories, offering viable options relevant to humans and free from cruelty. While some experimentation is legally mandated, countries like the European Union, India, Israel, New Zealand, and Norway have banned animal testing for certain consumer goods. Over 100 million animals in the U.S. suffer in chemical, drug, food, and cosmetics tests, medical training, and curiosity-driven experiments. Taxpayer funds support crude, painful tests by government agencies and health charities, neglecting more beneficial non-animal studies. \nSupport cruelty-free products, back animal-friendly charities, promote non-animal testing, advocate for humane methods, and oppose animal experiments in education. PETA's global efforts, including investigations, lobbying, and funding non-animal research, achieve numerous victories for lab animals annually.",

The study utilizes the ultrasonic pulse-transmission technique and the spectral ratio (SR) method to evaluate elastic-wave attenuation in rock salt samples, which consist of over 95% halite. \r\nResults indicate that triaxial pressure increases Q and V by closing micro-cracks and compacting rock frames, while elevated temperature induces thermal effects and accelerates attenuation.\r\nThe article concludes with the establishment of empirical relationships between ultrasonic waves in salt samples. The implications for seismic imaging and their applying are discussed, emphasizing the relevance of this work in building subsurface models. \r\nThe paper is highlighted rock salt's importance in various geological processes and applications, and questions regarding the influence of composition, crystalline structure, pressure, and temperature on salt velocities and inelasticity are posed",

"text": "A new study led by York University professor Charles-Édouard Boukaré reveals that the structure of Earth's lower mantle likely solidified within the planet's first 100 million years. Published in Nature, this research combines fluid dynamics and geochemistry, showing that key features of Earth's interior formed early from low-pressure crystal formation—contradicting previous assumptions that high-pressure reactions dominated. Boukaré’s model simulates how early molten mantle cooled and crystallized, indicating that a planet's youthful conditions deeply influence its long-term structure. These findings refine our understanding of planetary evolution and may help predict how other rocky planets form and behave.",

"about": "A new study shows that winter sea ice strongly influences how much CO2 the Southern Ocean absorbs each year, with longer-lasting ice boosting uptake by about 20%, shaping climate change impacts.",
"text": "Research highlights the crucial role of winter sea ice in regulating how much carbon dioxide the Southern Ocean absorbs from the atmosphere each year. Researchers found that in years when sea ice persists longer, the ocean can take up around 20% more CO2 compared to years when sea ice forms late or melts early. The reason is that sea ice shields the ocean from strong winter winds, limiting the mixing of surface waters with deeper, carbon-rich layers. Using data from the west Antarctic Peninsula, the study underscores the need for more wintertime observations to improve climate predictions. Since the Southern Ocean absorbs about 40% of global oceanic CO2 uptake, these findings are vital for understanding its role in slowing climate change. The research was conducted by the University of East Anglia with partners from Germany, the UK, and Norway, and published in Communications Earth & Environment.",

"text": "The Forest Pathways Report 2023 from WWF and the Forest Declaration Assessment reveals that the world is failing to achieve crucial forest protection and restoration goals by 2030, as deforestation continues at an alarming rate globally, with 6.6 million hectares lost in 2022, primarily in tropical regions. Urgent action is needed to reverse this trend and prevent tropical forests from becoming carbon sources under the impacts of climate change. The report emphasizes the importance of ending forest-harming investments, reforming global trade rules, accelerating land rights recognition for Indigenous peoples, and shifting towards nature-based economies to safeguard forests. WWF urges governments and businesses to act swiftly to protect and restore these vital ecosystems.",

"text": "In southern Ukraine, a rewilding initiative releases endangered kulan, Asiatic wild asses, on the Tarutino Steppe as part of the Danube Delta region's restoration. Led by Ukrainian conservationists, the project aims to reintroduce keystone species, such as kulan and Konik horses, to promote biodiversity and restore habitats. Despite challenges from the war in Ukraine, which disrupted ecotourism and posed risks to wildlife, conservation efforts persist. Local communities volunteer, and initiatives like the Danube Delta Rewilders Club seek to connect children with nature amidst the ongoing conflict.",
