"about": "Three of Greenland’s REE-bearing deposits, deep under the ice, may be among the world’s largest by volume, holding great potential for the manufacture of batteries and electrical components essential to the global energy transition.",
"text": "Greenland’s concentration of natural resource wealth is tied to its hugely varied geological history over the past 4 billion years. Some of the oldest rocks on Earth can be found here, as well as truck-sized lumps of native (not meteorite-derived) iron. Diamond-bearing kimberlite “pipes” were discovered in the 1970s but have yet to be exploited, largely due to the logistical challenges of mining them.\n\nGreenland was shaped by many prolonged periods of mountain building. These compressive forces broke up its crust, allowing gold, gems such as rubies, and graphite to be deposited in the faults and fractures.\n\nBut the greatest proportion of Greenland’s natural resources originates from its periods of rifting – including, most recently, the formation of the Atlantic Ocean from the beginning of the Jurassic Period just over 200 million years ago.",

"text": "Engineers from the University of Glasgow have used sophisticated computer simulations of bladeless wind turbines (BWTs) to identify for the first time how future generations of the technology could be built for maximum efficiency.\n \nThe findings could help the renewables industry take BWTs, which are still at an early stage of research and development, from small-scale field experiments to practical forms of power generation for national electricity grids.\n \nUnlike conventional wind turbines, which convert the kinetic energy of blades propelled by moving air into electricity, BWTs generate power through a process called vortex-induced vibration.\n\nIn a new paper published in the journal Renewable Energy, the team show how they used computer modelling techniques to simulate the performance of thousands of variations of BWT design.",

Her art revolves around exploration and curiosity, capturing biomorphic shapes that seem alive. Williams invites viewers to examine these forms from unique angles, often hidden from sight, fostering a sense of wonder.\r\nWhile her work addresses environmental concerns, it evokes fascination rather than grief. It transcends mere natural science, portraying inanimate objects with a metaphysical essence. Williams predominantly focuses on \"shy ecosystems,\" damaged by climate change, and hopes her art fosters empathy not only for nature but also for vulnerable human communities.\r\nIn a recent Q+Art Interview, Williams discusses her artistic inspirations, including lichens and moss, the satisfaction of handwritten to-do lists, and the value of saying \"no\" for stress relief.",

"about": "The era of western global domination has reached its end - so what comes next?\nWhat can the fall of Rome teach us about the decline of the West today?",
"text": "Over the last 3 centuries, the West rose to dominate the planet. Then, suddenly, around the turn of the millennium, history reversed. Faced with economic stagnation and internal political division, the West has found itself in rapid decline.\n\nThis is not the first time the global order has witnessed such a dramatic rise and fall. The Roman Empire followed a similar arc from dizzying power to disintegration - a fact that is more than a strange historical coincidence. Historian P.Heather and political economist J.Rapley use this Roman past to think anew about the contemporary West, its state of crisis, and what paths we could take out of it.\n\nAuthors explore the uncanny parallels - and productive differences - between the two cases, moving beyond the familiar tropes of invading barbarians and civilizational decay to learn new lessons from ancient history. From 399 to 1999, the life cycles of empires, they argue, sow the seeds of their inevitable destruction.",

"about": "The article from One Planet emphasizes how advocates for ecological sustainability address the triple bottom-line challenge, spotlighting strategies that adeptly balance environmental, social, and economic factors.",
"text": "Eco-communities, acting as self-sufficient models, offer valuable insights for mainstream societies facing the triple-bottom-line (TBL) challenge. Examining 28 eco-communities underscores the pivotal role of eco-champions in introducing innovative solutions, specifically focusing on lifestyle aspects within the triple-bottom-line framework. These solutions, absent in mainstream society, highlight the need for an eco-innovation network, as suggested by the eco-quintuple helix model. Implementing such networks in mainstream societies is crucial for sustainable transitions toward TBL solutions. The study recommends five propositions, including addressing greenwashing, fostering trust, and embracing nature-based solutions, providing an alternative approach to current sustainability initiatives for overcoming the TBL challenge.",

"text": "The report analyses the relationship of minimum wages and inequality, as well as the wage impacts of the COVID-19 crisis. It was emphasized that even before the COVID pandemic hit, hundreds of millions of workers worldwide were being paid less than the minimum wage. The report highlights how the COVID-19 crisis, a downward pressure on the level or growth rate of average wages was observed in two thirds of the countries for which recent data are available.\nThis report examines the evolution of real wages around the world, giving a unique picture of wage trends globally and by region.\nThe report presents the emerging empirical evidence of the effects of the crisis on wages.\nIt was emphasized that adequate minimum wages, statutory or negotiated, can play a key role in a human-centered recovery from the crisis.\nThis report concludes with policy recommendations to mitigate the negative impact of the crisis.",

While mountain glaciers are retreating globally due to warming, the study highlights how different types of mountains respond uniquely to climate change, influencing landscapes and communities in various ways. These changes pose heightened risks such as avalanches, floods, and landslides, impacting water supply, ecosystems, and human activities. As climate change alters mountain landscapes and ecosystems, traditional practices, indigenous cultures, and vital resources face threats, necessitating a comprehensive approach to protect and sustain these delicate environments.",

The Salar de Atacama covering approximately 3,000 square kilometers, has been established a linchpin in the global lithium supply chain. Two companies, SQM and Albemarle, make up all of Chile’s lithium production. \r\nThis desolate salt flat, one of the world's largest sources of lithium, is a captivating blend of natural wonder and industrial significance.\r\nAs demand for lithium has rapidly increased in recent years, so have the pressures on the Atacama, its water table, biodiversity and nearby communities. According to a government-commissioned study, the Atacama water table is losing an estimated 1,750-1,950 liters per second. Indigenous leaders say it will kill the desert and they are fighting for the mining to stop. \r\nThe project opposition from the local indigenous community is both immense and widespread",

"about": "Mobility is now central to global politics, and while it's clear that vehicles are changing, the rapid transformation of the systems behind them—driven by electrification, connectivity, and autonomy—is less visible. This shift spans all modes of transport.",
"text": "The global transition away from fossil fuels in transport is accelerating, driven primarily by electrification and supported by urban initiatives to reshape mobility for sustainability—especially in Europe. This shift is also fueled by rapid advances in AI, IoT, software, and production technologies, along with growing demands for sustainable materials and innovative mobility services. As a result, the transport sector—one of the world’s largest—is undergoing major disruption. Europe, traditionally dominant in automotive, now faces rising competition from China, whose electric vehicle market surged by 40% in 2024, and growing trade tensions with the U.S. Amid this global transformation, regions like Gothenburg, with its full-scale vehicle and transport industry cluster, stand at a critical crossroads in shaping the future of mobility.",

"text": "The report highlights the open ocean's critical role in sustaining the biosphere and supporting global socio-economic well-being. With 99% of habitable volume, the ocean faces climate-induced challenges like warming, deoxygenation, and acidification, endangering ecosystems and human welfare.\n\nThemes such as governance, climate change, ocean ecosystems, fisheries, pollution, and human-ocean relationships are covered, providing insights into their connection. The report utilizes indices, indicators, and expert assessments to address uncertainties due to limited ocean monitoring.\n\nKey findings reveal that ocean warming dominates climate energy storage, accounting for 93% of excess heat from 1971 to 2010. Assessing the cumulative impact of human activities on marine ecosystems is crucial to understand regional conditions and stressor contributions.\n\nThe report presents key messages and recommendations based on a baseline assessment of human well-being and the state of the open ocean.",
