"about": "PlanA.earth article talks about why ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) regulations are an important tool for driving sustainability. Fashion companies complying with ESG are positioned to attract and retain customers, investors, and employees.",
"text": "The fashion industry is one of the most polluting industries in the world, and it is facing increasing pressure to become more sustainable. ESG regulations are a set of standards that companies must comply with in order to be considered sustainable. They are becoming increasingly important for fashion companies, as investors and consumers are increasingly demanding sustainable products and services. There is a number of things that fashion companies can do to comply with ESG regulations, such as reducing their environmental impact, improving their social performance, and ensuring good corporate governance. The article also provides a number of specific examples of ESG regulations that are relevant to the fashion industry, such as Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) that is currently developed by the European Union, which will require companies to report on their ESG performance.",

The active photovoltaic surface can be applied to any substrate. The solar cells have a high efficiency of 20 per cent. An area of 11 square metres (equivalent to the surface of a mid-size SUV) could produce energy for up to 12,000 kilometres a year under ideal conditions¹. The energy generated by the solar cells is used for driving or fed directly into the high-voltage battery. The photovoltaic system is permanently active and also generates energy when the vehicle is switched off. In future, this could be a highly effective solution for increased electric range and fewer charging stops.",

"about": "Physics dictates optimal efficiency at intermediate speeds, while engineering ensures stability and durability. Aesthetic and noise considerations also factor into the design.",
"text": "It's possible to build a wind turbine with two blades or five blades or even one blade, but most modern windmills have three blades. And there are three reasons for that.\n\nThe first reason for three blades comes from physics. The more blades a windmill has, the more torque it can generate. But also, the more drag it has, because each additional blade has to cut through the wind, and drag grows quickly the faster the windmill is spinning. So, in general, many bladed windmills work better at lower rotational speeds relative to wind speed. On the other hand, a windmill with fewer blades generates less torque, but also experiences less drag.\n\nThe second reason comes from engineering. The problem is that windmills have to be strong enough to withstand the many different bending and rotational and vibrational forces necessary for their operation.\n\nThe third reason comes from human comfort. Three-blade rotors are generally considered more visually pleasing than a two-blade equivalent.",

"text": "Water scarcity is set to worsen with climate change and socioeconomic shifts, particularly impacting populations in the Global South, according to an Utrecht University study. Lead author Dr. Edward Jones emphasizes the complex interplay of climate change, socioeconomic factors, and water availability and quality, with current estimates suggesting that 55% of the global population already faces water scarcity issues, projected to rise to 66% by the end of the century. While future water scarcity will vary regionally, with Western Europe and North America experiencing concentrated increases driven by water quantity, developing countries in the Global South face more widespread and persistent scarcity influenced by factors such as rapid population growth and deteriorating water quality. The study underscores the importance of considering water quality alongside quantity in addressing the global water crisis, highlighting the need for strategies to mitigate water scarcity and pollution.",

"text": "Nearly one in three of people living in the US—an estimated 120 million—are exposed to unhealthy levels of air pollution. Much of that pollution comes from cars, trucks and buses, which release particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and other toxic emissions. Poor air quality increases respiratory ailments like asthma and bronchitis, and increases the risk of death from cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, as well as cancer. \n\nCars and trucks account for nearly one-quarter of US emissions. About 130 kg comes from the extraction, production, and delivery of the fuel, while the great bulk of heat-trapping emissions—370 kg per barrel of oil.\n\nOil is extracted by drilling, fracking, or mining. Drilling is closely associated with oil spills and accidents, like the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster, while fracking is linked with toxic water and air pollution, methane leaks, and earthquakes.",

"about": "Petra, the ancient Jordanian city with monumental temples and an ingenious water system, is being studied by archaeologists to uncover how its thriving desert culture was built over 2,000 years ago.",
"text": "More than 2,000 years ago, the thriving city of Petra rose up in the bone-dry desert of what is now Jordan. An oasis of culture and abundance, the city was built by wealthy merchants whose camel caravans transported incense and spices from the Arabian Gulf. They carved spectacular temple-tombs into its soaring cliffs, raised a monumental Great Temple at its heart, and devised an ingenious system that channeled water to vineyards, bathhouses, fountains, and pools. But following a catastrophic earthquake and a slump in its desert trade routes, Petra's unique culture faded and was lost to most of the world for nearly a thousand years. Now, in a daring experiment, an archaeologist and sculptors team up to carve an iconic temple-tomb to find out how the ancient people of Petra built their city of stone. Meanwhile, scientists using remote sensors and hydraulic flumes uncover the vast city and its sophisticated water system.",

"about": "Peter and Christine Muema from Machakos, Kenya, boosted yields on their 2-acre farm by adopting planting basins. This simple method doubled harvests, improved income, funded school fees, and inspired neighbours to embrace the technique for better farming.",
"text": "Previously relying on hired oxen for ploughing, married couple often planted late and saw modest yields. After losing access to oxen, they switched to planting basins: Peter dug the holes while Christine planted and covered seeds—finishing the whole farm in just two days. Despite planting maize late, their harvest doubled. Encouraged, Peter now plans to dig larger, better-organized basins before the rains to capture more moisture, using soil and terraces to prevent flooding and mulch to retain water throughout the season. The improved yields have allowed them to pay school fees for their sons, feed the family, open a market kiosk, and start a poultry project. The reduced labour also needs free time for other income-generating activities. Their success has inspired neighbouring farmers to learn and adopt the method, spreading innovation and boosting community resilience.",

"text": "The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management commissioned the Leiden Centre for Environmental Sciences (CML) and the RIVM to investigate the effects of pesticide mixtures on aquatic life.\n\nLeiden researchers used data collected by water boards and the Dutch water authority Rijkswaterstaat to assess how concentrations of hundreds of pesticides in surface water `affect ecological health, revealing that even if individual pesticide levels are within legal limits, their combined effects can lead to significant species loss. In 2022, toxic pressures from pesticide mixtures exceeded acceptable levels at over 20% of monitored locations, despite individual substances being compliant.\n\nThese findings were presented on an interactive website, the Pesticide Atlas. that allows both the public and policymakers to access data on pesticide concentrations. Starting 14 October, the atlas will provide a current and comprehensive risk assessment of pesticide mixtures in Dutch surface water.",

It explains the four key players (government, insurers, patients, and providers) and four crucial factors: number of coverage sources, source of coverage, source of funding, and the sector delivering care. \n\nThe video details four major models: Beveridge (Britain), National Health Insurance (Canada), Out-of-Pocket, and Bismarck (Germany). It also explains how the US system is a complex mix of these models, differing for various populations. The video positions the US system as the most privatized and market-driven.",
