Such protection is particularly critical for freshwater ecosystems, which have experienced greater biodiversity declines than terrestrial and marine systems. While their main goal is conserving natural heritage, tourism is becoming increasingly important for generating revenue and supporting local communities. However, growing tourism demand puts pressure on park managers to balance conservation with recreation. Sustainable tourism requires strategies that minimize environmental impact while covering conservation costs. To achieve this, understanding tourist preferences and behavior is key. This study uses a choice experiment at Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park in Italy to explore how site features and visitor characteristics (like demographics and past experience) influence activity choices. As a Nature-based Solution (NbS), they preserve intact landscapes and support biodiversity, climate resilience, and ecosystem services like water filtration and carbon storage. The IUCN defines seven types, from strict nature reserves to managed resource areas. In the Nordic countries, landscape protection is governed at various levels. While laws and structures vary, all focus on preserving biodiversity and natural values.
