Large-scale hydrogen storage in salt caverns has been under construction around the world, for example, in Teesside in the UK; Clemens Dome, Moss Bluff, and Spindle top in the USA; Kiel in Germany; and in northern and southern Poland. Hydrogen research needs to develop more for using it in green energy transition. In this study, hydrogen’s physical and chemical properties are first introduced; the geological conditions of the underground reservoirs in three counties of Southern Ontario are analysed, especially salt caverns. Several potential challenges that may affect the safe storage of hydrogen in salt caverns are also noted, and appropriate solutions are provided.
