"about": "Global progress toward Zero Hunger has stalled, with rising conflict, reduced humanitarian funding, and uneven national efforts leaving many countries off track to end hunger by 2030.",
"text": "The 2025 Global Hunger Index (GHI) marks twenty years of tracking progress toward Zero Hunger, showing that global efforts are falling short. While the global GHI score has dropped from 28.2 in 2000 to 18.3 in 2025, progress has slowed sharply since 2016. Twenty-seven countries have seen hunger rise, and ten show little or no improvement, while five—Fiji, Jordan, Libya, Solomon Islands, and Syria—now score worse than in 2000.\r\n\r\nGlobally, 52 countries have low hunger, 36 moderate, 35 serious, and 7 alarming levels. Yet overall progress has nearly stalled, putting the 2030 Zero Hunger target far out of reach. At the current pace, low hunger may not be achieved worldwide until 2137.\r\n\r\nConflict remains the main driver of hunger, fueling 20 food crises that affected nearly 140 million people last year. Humanitarian funding is shrinking while military spending rises, undermining the global response.",

"text": "The authors of the article consider geothermal energy as a source of clean, flexible and resilient power generation at competitive costs. Moreover, it can provide the integration of intermittent renewable sources` facilitation into the power system.\nGeothermal energy is indicated to be a catalyst of economic development in the countries where it is being used, new job places could be created. Innovations with drilling technologies and factory layouts are being introduced, which allows to predict a more sustainable power grid and the production of clean fuels, for example, green hydrogen.\nAccording to the authors, there is a lack of knowledge in the geothermal energy area. The support from the public sector and stakeholders is required to use the full possibilities geothermal energy provides us.",

"about": "From ancient sieges to Gaza, Ukraine and the Indus Basin, water is increasingly weaponised and contested. Scarcity, climate stress and geopolitics are turning water into a major global security threat.",
"text": "Water has always sustained civilizations, but its strategic value has also made it a tool and trigger of war. Historically used for flooding, poisoning or coercion, water continues to be weaponised in modern conflicts despite international law recognising access to water as a human right. Recent wars illustrate this clearly: armed groups manipulating dams in Iraq and Syria, deliberate flooding in Ukraine, and severe deprivation of water in Gaza with grave humanitarian consequences. Beyond battlefields, water is also wielded as political leverage, such as Turkey’s control of Euphrates flows or India’s upstream position on the Indus. \n\nAs scarcity deepens, water itself is becoming a cause of conflict. Violent incidents linked to water have surged dramatically in recent years, driven by population growth, climate change and rising demand.",

"about": "As cities densify and populations age, how are councils, communities and operators are redesigning mobility infrastructure so that every stage of the urban journey works for everyone.",
"text": "It explores how cities and transport systems can become truly inclusive and accessible. It argues that accessibility goes beyond just removing steps or physical barriers — it’s about making every part of a journey stress‑free, from walking routes and cycling infrastructure to public transport and EV charging. The piece highlights the social and environmental benefits of inclusive mobility, showing how better design allows more people to use low‑carbon transport options, supports independence for older adults and disabled people, and strengthens community engagement.\n\nIt also emphasizes community‑led initiatives and blended funding as practical ways to improve accessibility when councils face financial or logistical limits. Examples from UK cities and international projects illustrate how thoughtful planning, adaptive design, and collaboration between authorities, designers, and residents can create safer, easier, and more equitable travel experiences for everyone.",

"about": "David Day's book explores Antarctica's history, wildlife, governance disputes, and role in climate research. It examines the continent's allure, from resource competition to its critical insights into global environmental change.",
"text": "Being part of the 'What Everyone Needs to Know' series, the book explores the Earth's most forbidding and inaccessible continent. Discovered by European explorers in 1820, Antarctica soon became a focus of international competition for its marine resources, particularly the skins and oil of seals and whales. Over time, rival nations staked competing territorial claims. The Antarctic Treaty of 1959 sought to resolve these disputes, yet countries have continued asserting control through scientific bases, often as symbolic claims. Exploration and research by nations like the U.S., Britain, Russia, and Japan have revealed critical insights into past climates and warnings about Earth's future. Day examines the continent's history, wildlife, governance disputes, underwater mountain ranges, and its role in understanding global climate change. Despite being the coldest, driest, and windiest place on Earth, Antarctica remains a key site of scientific discovery and geopolitical interest.",

The project near the drilling site has garnered enthusiasm from Zetcon, an international engineering firm. The initiative repurposes the old coal mine at the MARK 51°7 site for sustainable energy. Initial drilling and testing have shown promising results, with plans to use extracted water for a heat pump, providing emissions-free heating. Bochum aims to replicate this geothermal project in other disused mines globally. Additionally, the city is converting abandoned mines into a Mine Thermal Energy Storage (MTES) system, enhancing sustainability in urban planning and energy solutions.",

"text": "In a year marked by unprecedented global conflict, more people reported feeling safe in their communities than ever before. Gallup’s 2025 Global Safety Report finds that 73% of adults worldwide report feeling safe walking alone at night where they live, the highest level recorded since Gallup began tracking the measure in 2006.\n\nGains in the Asia-Pacific, Western Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and sub-Saharan Africa largely drove the increase in perceived safety. Latin America and the Caribbean reached a milestone: 50% of residents now say they feel safe walking at night — the first time the region has reached this level.\n\n“Even amid conflict and uncertainty, people around the world are building safer communities from the ground up,” said Jon Clifton, Gallup CEO. “These findings show that safety isn’t only the absence of violence, it’s the presence of trust, institutions and collective resilience.",

With modern warfare going through a rapid digital and technological transformation, AGILE is designed for the ‘New Defence' players, the startups and tech innovators who move at high speed.\n\nTo support them, the programme will provide faster, more flexible funding for individual companies, and allow innovations to be deployed as quickly as possible.",

"text": "Attacks on schools, students, and teachers violate children’s right to education and jeopardize their futures. In conflict zones, learning is disrupted, leaving generations without essential skills and exposing children to exploitation, abuse, and recruitment by armed groups. Education is not only a right but also a life-saving protection, offering safe spaces and helping to break cycles of crisis. To safeguard this right, the Safe Schools Declaration was launched in 2015, committing states to protect education during armed conflict, prevent military use of schools, and ensure learning continues. So far, 121 states have endorsed it, promoting conflict-sensitive systems and cooperation. UNICEF plays a key role, supporting governments and communities through school rehabilitation, teacher training, psychosocial support, and innovative solutions like radio education programmes, ensuring children can keep learning even amid war and insecurity.",

"about": "CAFAMORE develops an EU-wide carbon farming monitoring and registry system to ensure accurate MRV, support certification, and build trust in carbon markets.\nCoordinated by Stichting Wageningen Research (WR), Netherlands",
"text": "The European Commission is developing the first EU-wide voluntary framework for certifying carbon removals, carbon farming, and carbon storage in products, setting quality criteria, monitoring processes, and result-based remuneration for farmers and foresters. Central to this are robust, cost-effective MRV systems and a spatially explicit registry. CAFAMORE aims to develop an EU-wide parcel-level monitoring system for carbon farming, harmonizing and automating data collection, quantifying activities and baselines, and providing a registry and marketplace. It integrates earth observation, soil, and management data to track SOC, biomass, and N₂O changes, supporting certification, CSRD reporting, and national inventories. MRV tools will be tested in seven pilot countries, reducing administrative burden, increasing transparency, and boosting trust and adoption in carbon farming.",

"name": "An alarming trend of the increase in contamination of water basins in USA because of road salt using: facts and proposals",
"about": "In December 2022, Penn State Extension published an article by Justin Mansberger, Extension Educator, expressing concern about chemical sodium chloride contamination of groundwater and surface water due to the use of high quantities of road salt",
"text": "In the last decades, road salt usage is growing exponentially, and now about 20 million tons of road salt are used annually in America only against 5,000 tons in the 1950s. The author claims that the exponential increase in road salt has caused various problems for water quality, and surface water contamination of sodium chloride tends to be very seasonal. In author's opinion, the adverse effects of excessive chloride also significantly affect the reproduction of all aquatic species inhabiting water bodies, food sources, and amphibian osmoregulation. \nThat is why it is need to reduce excessive road salt and introduce environmentally friendlier options compared to traditional de-icing procedures. For example, it may be implementing application regulators onto plow vehicles for limit the amount of excess salt dropped, or using salt brine to replace traditional road salt. Switching to a liquid brine can reduce the salt being dropped on roadways by as much as 70%, if possible",
