"text": "Grasslands, especially natural and semi-natural ones, support biodiversity and provide vital ecosystem services (ES) like water regulation, carbon storage, erosion control, pollination, and cultural benefits. This study compares grasslands in southern Africa (SA) and northwest Europe, revealing that while SA’s larger natural grasslands better meet ES demands, Europe’s smaller semi-natural grasslands often fall short. Three ES bundles were identified: water and fodder production, cultural services tied to livestock, and biodiversity-related regulation (e.g., pollination). Greenhouse gas mitigation appeared unlinked to these. Despite global grassland decline, strategic management can reduce trade-offs and boost synergies among ES. The study urges greater inclusion of grasslands in food security and land-use policies to harness their full value in sustainable agriculture and livelihoods.",

"text": "Biotic interactions are often overlooked in large-scale species distribution models (SDMs), which traditionally focus on abiotic factors. This study tested the importance of including biotic factors (trophic resource richness) in SDMs for 177 African bat species. Two models were built per species—one using only abiotic variables (noBIO-SDM) and one including biotic variables (BIO-SDM). BIO-SDMs consistently outperformed noBIO-SDMs (higher AUC values), and biotic predictors ranked as more important than abiotic ones in ~68% of species, including generalists. Over 80% of species showed changes in predicted distribution between models, especially in tropical forests and shrublands. These findings show that biotic interactions significantly influence species distributions even at continental scales, and generalist species also benefit from their inclusion. Integrating biotic factors improves ecological realism in SDMs and enhances predictions under climate change.",

Designers increasingly use natural, biodegradable fibers like cotton, hemp, and bamboo to reduce water and energy use. "text": "In Madagascar, communities and conservationists are restoring ancient forests without planting new trees by using the innovative “foxhole technique.” Instead of planting saplings, they dig small pits that capture rainwater and protect naturally occurring seedlings. This method revives native biodiversity, improves soil moisture, reduces erosion, and supports natural regeneration. By working with local people, the project helps restore degraded land sustainably and cost-effectively while empowering communities to protect ecosystems for the long term. This approach demonstrates that supporting nature’s self-recovery can be more resilient than artificial reforestation.",

Professor Bindoff explains how Antarctica’s ice loss, the slowing of the Southern Hemisphere overturning circulation, and the dramatic decline in winter sea ice reveal urgent climate signals. His research shows how global oceans are warming, losing oxygen, and experiencing changing salinity — all clear fingerprints of human-driven greenhouse gas emissions. As a lead author for multiple IPCC reports, Bindoff highlights the urgent need to understand and track these changes to guide policy decisions during this critical decade for climate action.",

"text": "Nuclear power is undergoing a global revival amid rising energy demands and climate pressures. While the U.S. has the most reactors, new growth is centered in Asia, with China leading expansion. Countries like Bangladesh and Turkey are launching their first plants. At the same time, interest in advanced reactors—using alternative fuels and coolants—is growing, with U.S. projects like TerraPower and Kairos Power advancing. License extensions are allowing older plants to run up to 80 years. Tech giants like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon are investing in nuclear to meet AI-related energy needs. Still, deployment remains slow and uneven worldwide.",

"about": "Wind energy is set to expand globally, driven by evolving policies and falling costs. Long-term, consistent policy frameworks are essential to attract investment, support infrastructure, and ensure wind plays a key role in a zero-carbon energy future.",
"text": "Wind energy is expected to grow significantly worldwide, taking on a new role in the energy market. Its development has been policy-driven and will remain so, with support ranging from R&D to investment incentives and regulations. As costs decline, some countries may reduce production-based support, but policy needs will persist, though in new forms. Achieving a zero-carbon energy system requires major investments, guided by long-term, consistent policies to attract private funding. Effective policy frameworks must reduce risks and ensure stable returns. A mix of tools will support not just wind deployment but broader system changes, including electrification, digitalization, battery and hydrogen support, grid upgrades, and inclusive regulation. Global energy challenges require coordinated policy—not just market forces. Policymakers must design balanced, adaptive policy packages to help wind energy lead the transition to a sustainable energy future.",
