"text": "The Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement – Nominations is open for the 2027 cycle, with submissions accepted until 15 May 2026. The Tyler Prize is a leading international award recognizing individuals and institutions whose work demonstrates exceptional scientific rigor and measurable impact in areas such as ecological protection, sustainable energy, biodiversity conservation, and solutions to pressing environmental challenges.\n\nEligible nominees must be proposed by third parties, and self-nominations are not accepted. Nominations remain under consideration for up to three years, and the selection process emphasizes significant contributions to environmental science, policy, and practical solutions with global relevance.\n\nThe nomination process requires a detailed summary of achievements, nominee and nominator credentials, and references. Laureates receive a US $250,000 award, along with a medallion and plaque, in recognition of their outstanding contributions.",

"about": "Nobian, as a European salt & chemical market leader, one of the most sustainable companies within the European chemical industry, asked Ecomatters to conduct an LCA on the different options for salt producing to define the environmental footprints",
"text": "There are several genetic types of salt deposits and several different methods of salt obtaining, namely, underground rock salt mining, rock salt leaching method, lake salt mining, and solar sea salt harvesting. Ecomatters analysed the Product Environmental Footprint score of the different salt sources and different kind of its obtaining taking into account all factors of extraction, processing, storing and transporting from various possible overseas sources. The study concluded that high-purity vacuum salt from the Netherlands had the smallest environmental footprint. It also found that the salt mining and production operations of sea- and rock salt have a smaller footprint than the production of vacuum salt. When focussing on the impact of the production stage alone, using sea or rock salt appears to be a sustainable alternative. This study showed that it is crucial to look at the different aspects of the entire supply chain to evaluate the sustainability of alternative salt sources",

The Nobel Sustainability Trust has entrusted the selection process to the Technical University of Munich (TUM). \n\nThe awards will be bestowed upon these three winners on November 20, 2024. It is the second year that the Nobel Sustainability Trust is handing out these awards. The other two awards this year go to Prof. Klaus Butterbach-Bahl and Prof. Jiuhui Qu for their outstanding contributions in the fields of agriculture and water, respectively.",

"text": "John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret and John M. Martinis, used a series of experiments to demonstrate that the bizarre properties of the quantum world can be made concrete in a system big enough to be held in the hand. Their superconducting electrical system could tunnel from one state to another, as if it were passing straight through a wall. They also showed that the system absorbed and emitted energy in doses of specific sizes, just as predicted by quantum mechanics.\n\nThis year’s Nobel Prize in Physics recognises experiments that demonstrated how quantum tunnelling can be observed on a macroscopic scale, involving many particles. \n\nThis year’s laureates have thus contributed to both practical benefit in physics laboratories and to providing new information for the theoretical understanding of our physical world.",

"about": "The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2025 was awarded to Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson and Omar M. Yaghi \"for the development of metal-organic frameworks.\"",
"text": "The constructions they created – metal-organic frameworks – contain large cavities in which molecules can flow in and out. Researchers have used them to harvest water from desert air, extract pollutants from water, capture carbon dioxide and store hydrogen.\n\nOther constructions of this type are tailormade for capturing carbon dioxide, separating PFAS from water, delivering pharmaceuticals in the body or managing extremely toxic gases. Some can trap the ethylene gas from fruit – so they ripen more slowly – or encapsulate enzymes that break down traces of antibiotics in the environment. \n\nSome researchers believe that metal-organic frameworks have such huge potential that they will be the material of the twenty-first century. Time will tell, but through the development of metal-organic frameworks, Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson and Omar Yaghi have provided chemists with new opportunities for solving some of the challenges we face.",

"text": "Arctic sea ice hit its 2025 summer minimum without setting a record low on Sept. 10, despite a historically low winter maximum earlier in the year. Scientists say sea ice loss has slowed over the past 20 years due to natural variability in atmospheric and ocean systems, counterbalancing the impacts from human-caused climate change. However, researchers warn that this slowdown likely offers only a temporary reprieve, and that the continued escalation of global warming could cause rapid sea ice loss before 2050. The U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center for the first time switched to using Japanese sea ice data after losing access to key U.S. military satellite data, which had allowed for a continuous Arctic sea ice record since 1979.",

"text": "Global value chains (GVCs) are at an inflection point. For decades, they have been central to Asia’s rapid economic ascent. Today, however, these production networks are being reshaped by geopolitical dynamics, pandemic aftershocks and the emergence of disruptive technologies.\n\nThe world is entering a new phase of globalization — more fragmented, but also more digital, high-tech and dynamic. For Asia, this presents both huge growth potential and a massive downside risk to the development outlook, especially for emerging economies that do not move fast enough. The region’s future depends on its ability to stay open, innovate rapidly and adapt proactively to global shifts in geopolitics and protectionist policies.\n\nTo stay ahead, Asia must strengthen regional integration while remaining globally open, invest in infrastructure and human capital, foster industry clusters and specialization, balance resilience and openness.",
