"name": "Arctic Today: Underwater noise in the Arctic – How can we reduce its impacts as shipping traffic grows? By Laurel Colless",
"about": "As vessel traffic in the Arctic continues to grow, more research is urgently needed to understand how this is affecting the underwater soundscape, and how best to minimize the impacts on both marine mammals and the communities that depend on them.",
"text": "The effects of climate change and human activities are being felt everywhere, both above and below the surface of our oceans. In the Arctic, the ocean is home to abundant wildlife that Inuit communities rely on, including narwhal, beluga, and other marine mammals. Many of these species rely on sound to navigate, communicate and find food. But underwater noise generated from human activity can interfere with this vital behavior, causing stress and disorientation for marine life – including endangered whales.\n\nTo address this issue, a collaborative research initiative led by Oceans North, the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO), and the University of California San Diego (UC San Diego) is working to better understand and mitigate the impacts from underwater noise in the Canadian Arctic.",

Furthermore, the current geopolitical climate marked by the rivalry between China, the U.S. and Europe, positions Africa to play a key role in the global energy transition. To unlock this potential, several key policy shortcomings need to be addressed.\n\nFirst and foremost, Africa needs to prioritize securing its own energy supply - leveraging international partnerships to develop key infrastructure projects can help boost domestic and intra-African energy consumption and increase its export capacity. Second, expanding Africa’s energy production capacity for export globally without adding value through beneficiation can lead to unsustainable investments which may not benefit future generations. Third, utilizing the continent’s reserves of critical raw materials can reduce its dependence on global superpowers and better navigate an increasingly pol",

"text": "The article explores how China’s coal industry is evolving under the pressure of the “dual carbon” goals—carbon peaking and neutrality. Using a structural equation model, the research identifies coal demand as the key pathway through which carbon reduction policies affect coal supply. While current impacts of technology and renewables remain limited, their future potential is significant with strategic support. The study reveals complex policy transmission mechanisms involving socio-economic, technical, and energy-saving factors. It highlights the need for integrated strategies that balance economic growth, energy security, and environmental sustainability. Findings offer insights not only for China but also for other coal-dependent nations aiming for carbon neutrality, emphasizing demand-side regulation, clean energy adoption, and policy innovation.",

"text": "This article investigates how diatoms influence the hydromechanical properties of marine sediments, focusing on illite-rich Boston Blue Clay and smectite-rich Eugene Island Clay mixed with up to 20% diatoms. Experiments show that diatoms increase porosity, compressibility, and permeability, with diatom bridging enhancing fluid flow paths. Smectite-rich clays are more compressible and prone to overpressure than illite-rich clays. The findings highlight the role of diatoms in modifying sediment behavior under stress without significant breakage at tested concentrations. These results improve modeling of subsurface pressure and slope stability, aiding risk assessments for submarine landslides and seafloor infrastructure safety.",

"text": "Stromatolites, ancient microbial structures once dominant in early Earth's oceans, are now rare and mostly limited to extreme environments. A major discovery was made on Sheybarah Island (Red Sea, Saudi Arabia), where living shallow-marine stromatolites were found in open-marine intertidal to subtidal zones. These structures are shaped by microbial sediment accretion and lithification, forming up to 15 cm tall domes. Environmental conditions include extreme temperatures, light tidal currents, and oligotrophic waters. Microbial analysis revealed diverse communities of photoautotrophs and heterotrophs. A key finding is the presence of reticulated filaments in photic conditions—previously only known from dark cave systems. This discovery is the first of its kind in the Middle East and holds value for geology, geobiology, astrobiology, conservation.",

By analyzing data from the past 542 million years, the study reveals a key shift during the mid-Paleozoic that marks the transition to a more modern Earth system. This change is closely tied to the rise of land plants, which transformed how rocks weathered, how oxygen was produced and stored, and how the planet’s surface interacted with the atmosphere. The findings help pinpoint when Earth’s oxygen levels reached near-modern conditions and provide new insight into the complex links between life, climate, and the planet’s chemistry over deep time.",

"text": "This article reviews the Cenozoic floras of Greece, highlighting their significance for understanding Mediterranean and northern hemispheric vegetation evolution. It discusses how the modern Mediterranean climate—with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters—developed only in the late Pliocene, despite “Mediterranean” plant taxa appearing earlier in the Cenozoic across western Eurasia. The study compiles updated flora lists and illustrations from over 50 fossil assemblages, placing Greek plant fossils in a broader biogeographic context. Major shifts in plant communities are examined in relation to regional and global climatic changes. The paper draws on extensive fossil collections primarily from the University of Athens, including Oligocene volcanic sediments from the Evros region. Overall, it provides critical insights into the timing and processes that shaped Mediterranean vegetation and its precursors over millions of years.",

"text": "This study investigates the Mesozoic subduction zone beneath the Dongsha Waters of the northern South China Sea, part of the westward subduction of the ancient Pacific plate. Using deep seismic reflection profiles, magnetic anomaly data, and zircon dating, the researchers confirm the existence of a Mesozoic subduction system composed of accretion wedges, trenches, and igneous rock zones. The evolution of this zone is divided into Late Jurassic continental subduction and Late Cretaceous collision. The study highlights how this subduction influenced the tectonic evolution of the Chaoshan Depression and controlled gas hydrate formation through thermogenic gas migration along mud diapir structures. The findings also shed light on the complex tectonic history of East Asia, indicating the presence of volcanic arcs, residual Tethys remnants, and significant crustal reworking.",

Countries agreed on several vital draft resolutions on waterbird conservation, wetland restoration, equitable governance, and synergy with other environmental agreements. Zimbabwe committed to restoring 250,000 hectares of wetlands and adding five new Ramsar Sites. Voluntary global initiatives like the Freshwater Challenge, Mangrove Breakthrough, and the new Peatland Breakthrough received renewed support, with Peru becoming the first champion country. \n\nThe conference underscored wetlands' essential role in climate mitigation and adaptation. Panama will host COP16 in 2028, offering a platform to build on this momentum.",

"about": "A public platform and civil-sector organization focused on solving Ukraine’s water crisis through expert collaboration, anti-corruption reforms, emergency aid, and sustainable water resource management.",
"text": "UWA is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit organization addressing urgent water issues in Ukraine. It serves as a public platform uniting experts, businesses, officials, and citizens to develop sustainable solutions. \n\nUWA’s work spans the entire water cycle—from drinking and industrial water to wastewater and water reuse. It advocates for transparent governance, anti-corruption reforms, and strategic policy initiatives, including post-war recovery of water infrastructure like the Kakhovka Reservoir. \n\nIn response to war damage and widespread water insecurity—where 31% of the population lacks stable supply and 80% of wastewater goes untreated—UWA supports emergency access to clean water and long-term sector reform. It aims to restore water access, build digital monitoring systems, and ensure water’s role in economic growth and social development.",

"about": "The global trading system is today experiencing its worst disruptions since the Second World War. \r\nMultilateral cooperation itself is being called into question.",
"text": "The WTO Annual Report 2025 delivers a stark evaluation of the multilateral trading system at a pivotal moment. Although global trade showed notable resilience in 2024, with merchandise trade volumes rising by 2.9% and services trade expanding by 9%, the sharp downward revision of the 2025 outlook to a -0.2% contraction highlights how vulnerable that resilience is in the face of rising trade tensions and policy uncertainty.\r\n\r\nDirector-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s warning that the global trading system is facing “its most severe disruptions since the Second World War” is more than a rhetorical statement—it is a clear call for urgent action. The growing number of trade-restrictive measures, stalled progress in negotiations on agriculture and fisheries subsidies, and the ongoing deadlock in dispute settlement reform all signal a system under mounting pressure.",
