"text": "ESEH is an international organization founded in 1999 to promote the study and understanding of the complex interactions between human societies and the natural environment throughout Europe’s history. Its mission is to encourage comparative research in environmental history, foster communication among scholars across Europe and beyond, and strengthen the institutional presence of environmental history within educational systems and academic programs.\r\n\r\nESEH actively works to connect historical knowledge with contemporary policy-making and public awareness, emphasizing the importance of historical perspectives in addressing current environmental challenges. To achieve its goals, the Society engages in a wide range of activities: it publishes the ESEH Notepad—a quarterly newsletter featured in the journal Environment and History—and co-coordinates H-Environment, an international online discussion network that shares news and resources.",

These emissions can be cost-effectively reduced by upgrading technologies or equipment, and by improving operations.\n\nBiogas produced from the anaerobic digestion of organic material can be treated to create pipeline-quality natural gas, used directly as a cooking fuel, used to generate electricity, and captured on-site to provide heat and power.\n\nRemoving fugitive methane gas from underground coal mines and using it in profitable and practical ways can improve worker safety, enhance mine productivity, increase revenues, and reduce GHG emissions.\n\nGMI's Project Network facilitates communication, project development and implementation, and private sector involvement in methane abatement projects. Project Network members bring critical expertise and experience that help GMI Partner countries reduce methane emissions and set the stage for new and ongoing methane projects.",

"text": "2040 is a hybrid feature documentary that looks to the future, but is vitally important NOW!\r\n\r\nThe 2040 journey began with award-winning director Damon Gameau (That Sugar Film). Motivated by concerns about the planet his 4-year-old daughter would inherit, Damon embarked on a global journey to meet innovators and changemakers in the areas of economics, technology, civil society, agriculture, education and sustainability. Drawing on their expertise, he sought to identify the best solutions, available to us now, that would help improve the health of our planet and the societies that operate within it. From marine permaculture to decentralised renewable energy projects, he discovered that people all over the world are taking matters into their own hands.\r\n\r\nThis journey is the central premise for the documentary ‘2040’, a story of hope that looks at the very real possibility that humanity could reverse global warming and improve the lives of every living thing in the process.",

"about": "To rid the world’s oceans of plastic, we must prevent its accumulation.",
"text": "The Great Pacific Garbage Patch poses a severe threat to marine life, ecosystems, and human health. Animals often mistake plastic for food, while ghost nets—making up 46% of the patch—cause deadly entanglements. As plastic floats at sea, it breaks down into microplastics that are impossible to remove and can enter the food chain through bioaccumulation, potentially contaminating seafood. Beyond ecological and health impacts, microplastics also disrupt oceanic carbon sequestration.\r\n\r\nAfter years of engineering development and strategic partnership agreements, The Ocean Cleanup became the first ever organization to remove plastic pollution from the GPGP – and it remains the only one to this day.\r\n\r\nThe aim is to rid the oceans of plastic in the most responsible way. The mission is intended to benefit the ocean and its inhabitants, so they place protection of the marine environment and mitigation of any negative impact of our operations at the forefront of our ocean cleaning operations.",

"text": "The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), adopted by the UN General Assembly on 20 November 1989, is a landmark international treaty that defines the rights of every child under 18. It guarantees children the right to protection, education, health care, and to express their views on matters affecting their lives. The CRC covers civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights, and includes special protections for vulnerable children, such as those in conflict zones, with disabilities, or living in poverty.\n\nThe treaty obliges governments to implement laws, policies, and programs that ensure children’s well-being, equality, and full development. It emphasizes that children should have a voice in decisions that affect them and that their views be respected according to their age and maturity. As the most widely ratified human rights treaty, the CRC forms the foundation for global efforts to reduce child poverty and protect children from exploitation.",

"text": "European businesses heavily rely on imported metals due to limited domestic reserves, and the demand for these metals is expected to grow significantly due to factors like green energy, electric mobility, and digitalization. However, the security of supply is threatened by geopolitical uncertainties, including China's dominance in critical metal supply chains. Despite these challenges, the paper emphasizes the importance of not sacrificing sustainability for the security of supply and suggests that a strategic raw materials policy is needed to balance both objectives. It also highlights the challenges related to sustainability standards, power asymmetries, and lack of transparency in metal supply chains and proposes measures to improve sustainability governance and reduce dependency on individual countries, particularly China.",

"about": "Rewetting peatlands with biochar and FeSO₄ boosts carbon storage, alters microbial communities, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions, offering scalable strategies for restoring degraded agricultural peatlands.",
"text": "This 1-year outdoor mesocosm study investigated how water table management combined with organic (biochar, Miscanthus residues, cereal straw, biosolids, paper waste) and inorganic (FeSO₄) amendments affects carbon (C) storage and peatland functioning in degraded agricultural peatlands. Biochar was the most effective organic amendment, preserving 18.9 t C ha⁻¹, followed by Miscanthus residues, biosolids, cereal straw, and paper waste. \n\nA high water table with biochar and FeSO₄ suppressed enzyme activities, methanogen populations, and peat mineralization rates. Microbial shifts, including reductions in Actinobacteria (−22%) and Ascomycota (−61%), along with increased Fe-bound C, indicate biotic and abiotic mechanisms enhancing C preservation. Combining water management with targeted amendments can restore peat-C storage, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve peatland ecosystem functioning, offering practical, scalable strategies for sustainable peatland restoration.",
