"name": "The latest types of comprehensive environmental monitoring in areas of flooded salt mines",
"about": "In April 2023, the 'Frontiers in Earth Science' published an article by K. Pukanská (Slovakia) et al., discussing a multi-sensor and multi-temporal approach to monitoring earth surface deformations above flooded salt mines, using the example of Solotvyno",
"text": "The article discusses the threat posed by salt mines, particularly abandoned ones, to populated areas, infrastructure, and the environment, with a focus on the Solotvyno salt mines in Ukraine. Mining activities have led to significant subsidence, earth surface deformation, and sinkhole formation, impacting the landscape and infrastructure. The study employs multi-sensor and multi-temporal monitoring, including satellite radar data, optical imagery, and UAV photogrammetry, to assess the active deformation zone. The research emphasizes the environmental hazards and proposes a high-precision monitoring system. Results indicate ongoing subsidence trends, the emergence of new sinkholes, and potential ecological risks. The article underscores the importance of continuous monitoring using InSAR technology to prevent further damage to the surroundings and infrastructure. It also proposes a geodetic solution for permanent satellite monitoring to establish a subsidence monitoring network",

"about": "In December 2022, Penn State Extension published an article by Justin Mansberger, Extension Educator, expressing concern about chemical sodium chloride contamination of groundwater and surface water due to the use of high quantities of road salt",
"text": "In the last decades, road salt usage is growing exponentially, and now about 20 million tons of road salt are used annually in America only against 5,000 tons in the 1950s. The author claims that the exponential increase in road salt has caused various problems for water quality, and surface water contamination of sodium chloride tends to be very seasonal. In author's opinion, the adverse effects of excessive chloride also significantly affect the reproduction of all aquatic species inhabiting water bodies, food sources, and amphibian osmoregulation. \nThat is why it is need to reduce excessive road salt and introduce environmentally friendlier options compared to traditional de-icing procedures. For example, it may be implementing application regulators onto plow vehicles for limit the amount of excess salt dropped, or using salt brine to replace traditional road salt. Switching to a liquid brine can reduce the salt being dropped on roadways by as much as 70%, if possible",

From the ancient seabeds of the Tethys Ocean that formed the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, to the collision of continents that created the Alps, Europe’s landscapes are constantly evolving. Diverse environments like the Danube Delta and the Tabernas Desert reveal how geology shapes ecosystems and biodiversity, while Ice Age remnants such as Doggerland show how dramatically environments can change. The film concludes at Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii, illustrating that although Earth’s forces can be destructive, they also create fertile landscapes and sustain life, highlighting the constant balance between danger and creation.",

"text": "The new robot NASA sent to Mars is called \"Perseverance\". Its mission? To search for evidence of past life on the Red Planet - an important and ambitious endeavor. It took years to design the space probe and its small helicopter drone, called \"Ingenuity\". This documentary follows the rover's development, right up to its landing in the Jezero Crater on February 18, 2021.\n\nThe mission proved to be a complete success: the robot landed safely and all the instruments on board functioned smoothly. As a result, \"Perseverance\" was able to deliver high-resolution images of Mars. But getting there was an arduous journey for all involved.\n\nOn site, \"Perseverance\" takes samples from the crater, which scientists believe was once a river delta. Geological traces of past life - so-called biosignatures - could be hidden in the rock. Eventually, these samples will be brought back to Earth for analysis. Among other things, they could provide insights into possible life on Mars.",

"text": "The study starts from the assumption of a dialectical relationship between general aspirations for sustainable transport transformation and its predominantly market-based implementation. It analyzes the uneven development of e-scooter services in Germany during their first five years, using North Rhine-Westphalia as a case study. Three key findings emerge: first, the early expansion phase quickly stalled under market conditions and remains in prolonged stagnation. Second, only economically and culturally prosperous large cities provide high-quality micro-mobility services, while peripheral or structurally weaker cities have limited or no provision. Third, market-based providers focus on cities with high student populations, high purchasing power, large populations, and flat topography. These observations indicate that under market conditions, micro-mobility development is socio-spatially selective.",

Now 45, she continues the work to support her family, even as climate change, deforestation, and economic hardship threaten the practice. For generations, women in Ghana’s coastal communities have relied on mangroves not only as breeding grounds for oysters but also as natural barriers against erosion and storms.\n\nThrough the Development Action Association, hundreds of women once received training in sustainable oyster farming — including mangrove restoration, selective harvesting, and ecosystem preservation — helping them adapt to environmental pressures. But when U.S. aid funding was cut, these programs ended, leaving the women to continue their conservation efforts with limited resources.",

"about": "In How the Earth Turned Green, Joseph E. Armstrong traces the history of these verdant organisms, which many would call plants, from their ancient beginnings to the diversity of green life that inhabits the Earth today.",
"text": "On this blue planet, long before pterodactyls took to the skies and tyrannosaurs prowled the continents, tiny green organisms populated the ancient oceans. Fossil and phylogenetic evidence suggests that chlorophyll, the green pigment responsible for coloring these organisms, has been in existence for some 85% of Earth’s long history―that is, for roughly 3.5 bn years.\n\nUsing an evolutionary framework, the book addresses questions such as: Should all green organisms be considered plants? Why do these organisms look the way they do? How are they related to one another and to other chlorophyll-free organisms? How do they reproduce? How have they changed and diversified over time? And how has the presence of green organisms changed the Earth’s ecosystems? More engaging than a traditional textbook and displaying an astonishing breadth, How the Earth Turned Green will both delight and enlighten embryonic botanists and any student interested in the evolutionary history of plants.",

"text": "Civil society represents the space between the family, the market, and the state where citizens voluntarily advance common interests through independent organizations, from local environmental groups to large NGOs. In India, civil society has deep roots, from freedom struggle-era movements like the All India Women’s Conference to today’s thousands of NGOs, self-help groups, trade unions, and community-based organizations. Historically, they focused on providing social services in areas where government reach was limited. Over time, civil society organizations transformed from mere service providers to active participants in policy design, implementation, and monitoring. Civil society mobilizes public support, advocates for communities. One of civil society’s most valuable functions is bridging the gap between policymakers and citizens. Community-based organizations understand local contexts, cultural nuances, and specific challenges that might not be apparent to external policymakers",

While acknowledging the advocacy for NbS, the paper also highlights significant concerns, such as carbon offsetting, land grabbing, insufficient community consent, greenwashing, human rights violations, and militarized conservation. PAX underscores the importance of extending NbS to vulnerable contexts with strict adherence to standards and guidelines, advocating for responsible investment in communities most in need. Additionally, the paper offers insights from environmental peacebuilding projects to illustrate key lessons for successful NbS implementation in conflict-affected areas, aiming to achieve co-benefits for both nature and peace.",

Changes in its stability directly affect ice discharge and global sea level.\r\n\r\nThe SANAP 2025/2026 team arrived aboard SA Agulhas II on 11 January 2026 and established a field camp on the ice shelf. "text": "This grants Japanese automakers access to U.S. tax incentives for electric vehicles using minerals sourced in Japan. This ensures a stable mineral supply for Japan and supports its automotive industry. Simultaneously, India's concerns regarding its exclusion from the Minerals Security Partnership (MSP) have raised concerns. Given India's ambitious shift towards electric mobility and expanded electronics manufacturing, securing access to critical minerals is imperative. This may prompt global powers to reconsider the MSP's composition, potentially leading to India's inclusion. Such a move would enhance India's mineral security, bolstering its technological and economic pursuits. These developments underscore the growing global emphasis on critical minerals as a geopolitical tool.",

"text": "In Madagascar, communities and conservationists are restoring ancient forests without planting new trees by using the innovative “foxhole technique.” Instead of planting saplings, they dig small pits that capture rainwater and protect naturally occurring seedlings. This method revives native biodiversity, improves soil moisture, reduces erosion, and supports natural regeneration. By working with local people, the project helps restore degraded land sustainably and cost-effectively while empowering communities to protect ecosystems for the long term. This approach demonstrates that supporting nature’s self-recovery can be more resilient than artificial reforestation.",

"text": "In March, NASA researchers used a new camera system to capture data on the interaction between Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost Mission-1 lander engine plumes and the lunar surface. This data will help understand the hazards of engine plumes disturbing lunar dust, soil, and rocks, and will be crucial for developing human landing systems for NASA’s Artemis missions, starting with Artemis III. To further study plume-surface interactions, NASA’s Langley Research Center initiated tests in a 60-foot vacuum chamber, simulating lunar conditions. The tests will use two propulsion systems: an ethane plume simulation system and a 3D-printed hybrid rocket motor. These tests, running through spring 2026, will generate valuable data for improving predictive models and space hardware design. Additionally, the tests are modular, preparing NASA for both Moon and Mars missions. The data collected will be vital for ensuring crew safety and mission success.",

"name": "How Does Groundwater Work? – Water Facts for New Mexicans | a video by NM Ofc of State Engineer & Interstate Stream Comm",
"about": "In New Mexico, over 98% of public water systems rely on groundwater. As New Mexico gets warmer and our rivers and streams become increasingly stressed, more communities will turn to limited groundwater to meet demands.",
"text": "This educational video highlights the critical issue of groundwater depletion in New Mexico, emphasizing that most wells are at risk of going dry due to water usage exceeding natural recharge rates. It explains that groundwater recharge is a slow process, with only a small fraction of surface water penetrating underground, while the majority evaporates or is used by plants. The video illustrates how common daily activities, like leaking faucets, brushing teeth with running water, and washing cars, contribute significantly to water loss to the atmosphere. It concludes by urging viewers to conserve water by only taking what they need, promoting responsible water use for a sustainable supply.",

The report evaluates the limited representation of culture in the first four years of the 2030 Agenda, focusing on Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs). It offers recommendations, including integrating culture into national development plans, promoting wider consultation, and establishing an international community for culture and sustainable development. It also suggests hosting a High-Level Meeting on Culture during the upcoming HLPF cycle, creating relevant indicators, and encouraging cultural sectors to align with SDG efforts. The report underscores the importance of cultural contexts, local actors, and partnerships at all levels for a more profound cultural dimension in SDGs.",
