"about": "Harnessing the potential of biological resources to drive sustainable economic growth, enhance climate resilience, and foster innovation across various sectors.",
"text": "Building upon the foundations laid by the 2012 strategy and its 2018 update, the new approach seeks to capitalize on advancements in biotechnology to develop a circular economy that minimizes environmental impact. Key objectives include increasing the resource-efficient and circular use of biological resources, ensuring a competitive and sustainable supply of biomass, and positioning the EU at the forefront of the global bio-based materials market.\n\nThe strategy is underpinned by a comprehensive action plan that outlines concrete measures to strengthen and scale up biobased sectors, unlock investments, and deploy local bioeconomies across Europe. Initiatives such as the €100 mn circular bioeconomy thematic investment platform and pilot actions for sustainable food and farming systems aim to accelerate the transition towards a green economy.",

"about": "Dryland-wetlands in Sub-Saharan Africa are vital oases for biodiversity, water regulation, and climate resilience, yet face growing threats from climate change and human pressures, highlighting the urgent need for conservation and sustainable management.",
"text": "Sub-Saharan Africa, with its extensive dryland regions, is highly vulnerable to climate change impacts. The sub-Saharan wetlands are stunning ecosystems in combating climate change, where there is insufficient vegetation. Hence, Dryland-wetlands (DW) in sub-Saharan Africa are oases and pivotal for biodiversity, water management, and climate resilience. The face of threats is increasing due to anthropogenic pressures and climate change. These wetlands, found in arid and semi-arid regions with low and irregular precipitation, are vital for sustaining diverse species and providing essential ecosystem services such as water purification and carbon sequestration. Despite their critical role, DW are under severe threat of overuse, land degradation, and climate variability. This review evaluates the ecological functions of dryland-wetlands, their benefits, including support for biodiversity and water regulation, and the substantial challenges.",

"text": "During the last deglaciation, the formation of Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW)—dense, cold, salty water that sinks near Antarctica and sequesters atmospheric CO₂ in the deep ocean—slowed significantly, reducing the ocean’s capacity to trap carbon and contributing to global warming. \n\nChengfei He and colleagues, using radiocarbon dating of seabed sediments and Earth System Models, found that both AABW and North Atlantic deep water weakened simultaneously, rather than in the previously assumed “seesaw” pattern. This reduction in carbon storage accounted for roughly half of the CO₂ rise over 8,000 years. Observations today show similar weakening of AABW as the Southern Ocean warms, signaling a potential tipping point that could disrupt heat distribution, carbon sequestration, and global climate patterns.",

"text": "In North, Jesse M. Keenan argues that America is on the verge of a great northern climate migration that will likely reshape everything from the urban landscape to electoral politics. First, he provides a conceptual, analytical, and empirical overview of adaptation science with a focus on how and where people are going to live, work, and build communities. Next, Keenan examines the geography of climate migration within the context of broader demographic, housing, and economic trends in America. He will also highlight a range of market responses-from insurance to mortgages-that are already limiting the options for individuals and the public sector in high-risk places. \n\nNot just a collection of scientific observations and projections about America's future in the face of climate change, North explores the dawning of a post-climate era defined by the promise of a more sustainable way of life for those on the move and the peril of those left behind.",

"text": "This 1-year outdoor mesocosm study investigated how water table management combined with organic (biochar, Miscanthus residues, cereal straw, biosolids, paper waste) and inorganic (FeSO₄) amendments affects carbon (C) storage and peatland functioning in degraded agricultural peatlands. Biochar was the most effective organic amendment, preserving 18.9 t C ha⁻¹, followed by Miscanthus residues, biosolids, cereal straw, and paper waste. \r\n\r\nA high water table with biochar and FeSO₄ suppressed enzyme activities, methanogen populations, and peat mineralization rates. Microbial shifts, including reductions in Actinobacteria (−22%) and Ascomycota (−61%), along with increased Fe-bound C, indicate biotic and abiotic mechanisms enhancing C preservation. Combining water management with targeted amendments can restore peat-C storage, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve peatland ecosystem functioning, offering practical, scalable strategies for sustainable peatland restoration.",

"text": "This structured literature review examines the role of Global Citizenship Education (GCE) as a strategic tool within G20 policy frameworks to address economic inequality, sustainability challenges, and global cooperation, particularly in alignment with SDGs 4.7, 8, 10, 13, and 17. Drawing on over 80 scholarly and policy sources and eight G20 case studies—including Finland, South Korea, Germany, Brazil, South Africa, China, India, and the USA—the review finds that GCE’s transformative potential emerges when it is systemically embedded across curricula, teacher education, and intersectoral development agendas. Countries with robust integration demonstrate stronger links between GCE and economic mobility, sustainability awareness, and international collaboration, while fragmented or technocratic approaches often weaken its emancipatory dimensions. The review identifies critical gaps in monitoring, political support, and long-term impact evaluation, particularly in Global South contexts.",

"text": "As food demand grows, traceability technologies are redefining how food is monitored and preserved throughout supply chains. AI-assisted quality inspection tools such as Neolithics’ non-destructive imaging system enable faster, more accurate grading and shelf-life prediction, while IoT-driven cold chain solutions like Dockflow’s platform provide real-time tracking of temperature and humidity to prevent spoilage. A pilot project integrating these innovations within the avocado supply chain demonstrated significant reductions in shrinkage, inspection time, and greenhouse gas emissions. \n\nThe results underscore the potential of data-driven transparency and collaboration to shift the food industry toward proactive loss prevention, improved decision-making, and measurable gains in sustainability and profitability.",

"text": "Although current food systems have largely kept pace with population growth, ensuring sufficient caloric intake for many, they are the single most influential driver of planetary boundary transgression. More than half of the world's population struggles to access healthy diets, leading to devastating consequences for public health, social equity, and the environment. Although hunger has declined in some regions, recent increases linked to expanding conflicts and emergent climate change impacts have reversed this positive trend. Obesity rates continue to rise globally, and the pressure exerted by food systems on planetary boundaries shows no signs of abating. In this moment of increasing instability, food systems still offer an unprecedented opportunity to build the resilience of environmental, health, economic, and social systems, and are uniquely placed to enhance human wellbeing while also contributing to Earth-system stability.",

"about": "Held every 13 October, the day celebrates how people around the world are reducing their exposure to disasters and raising awareness about the importance of reining in the risks that they face. This year's theme—Fund Resilience, Not Disasters.",
"text": "Disaster costs are rising due to climate change and poor development choices, with direct losses around $202 billion annually and broader economic impacts of $2.3 trillion. Developing countries are most affected, while investment in disaster risk reduction (DRR) remains minimal—less than 1% of public budgets and only 2% of recent aid projects include DRR. Public and private strategies often ignore disaster risks, increasing vulnerability. The 2025 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction urges governments to boost DRR funding and ensure all development and private investments are risk-informed. Strengthening local capacities, promoting resilient investments, and integrating DRR into national strategies are key to preventing escalating economic, social, and humanitarian losses.",
