"name": "A KTH student hacked a children's watch – revealing serious security flaws | by Emelie Smedslund for KTH Royal Institute of Technology",
"about": "The smartwatch for children that Gustaf Blomqvist hacked in his thesis turned out to be a security disaster. The watch had an insecure network service that anyone could access via the internet.",
"text": "A recent study on the security of children’s smartwatches shows how vulnerable these devices can be to hacking. In his thesis “Ethical hacking of a Smartwatch for Kids: A Hacker's Playground”, Gustaf Blomqvist demonstrated how attackers could gain full control of a smartwatch, accessing its camera, microphone, speakers, and messaging functions, potentially enabling surveillance and denial-of-service attacks. By selecting a popular and feature-rich device, he identified multiple attack surfaces and uncovered a previously unknown vulnerability. His research involved analyzing the watch’s hardware and software, studying known exploits, and systematically mapping weaknesses. The findings highlight that even devices designed to ensure child safety can pose serious security risks. Experts warn that such vulnerabilities are not isolated but reflect a broader issue in software-based systems, emphasizing the growing challenge of securing digital infrastructure and the potential risks.",

"about": "Approximately 40 titanium deposits including one unique & 13 large ones represent the mineral and raw material base of titanium in Ukraine. It is believed that the titanium industry will become one of the foundations for attracting foreign investment",
"text": "According to the US Geological Survey, as of 2021, Ukrainian ilmenite accounted for about 5% of the world production of ores used for the production of titanium, although, currently, titanium ores are mined in Ukraine only from placer deposits (about 10% of all explored reserves).\r\nThe military aggression of Russian against Ukraine significantly changed the situation on the world titanium market and affected the development of the titanium industry in Ukraine, in particular, the mining of ores containing titanium and the production of titanium products. The volume of exports of ores containing titanium in 2022 decreased by more than 40%. In addition, the sanctions policy and the return to state ownership of titanium assets may lead to a redistribution of the market.\r\nDespite the hostilities, Ukrainian titanium assets remain attractive for investment. Analysts believe that titanium can become one of the foundation elements for the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine",

"about": "Balancing Diversity, Authenticity & Ethical Innovation.",
"text": "The book 'The Bridgerton Paradox in AI' by Amsterdam Business School researcher Somendra Narayan explores a key question in today’s technology: how should AI deal with a past shaped by exclusion, bias and colonial power? \n\nUsing the example of Bridgerton - a series that reimagines history through a modern, inclusive lens - the book looks at the tension between keeping historical data ‘authentic’ and correcting the injustices built into it.\n\nThe book shows how AI systems are often trained on archives that reflect colonial hierarchies and selective records. Because of this, AI can become a powerful ‘memory machine’ that repeats outdated ideas on a large scale. Drawing on systems thinking, socio-technical theory and Nagarjunian relational epistemology, the book argues that history is not one fixed story but a network of different perspectives. AI needs to recognise this complexity rather than simplify it.",

"about": "The documentary, directed by Rémy Burkel & Sylvie Deleule, investigates the reasons behind our widespread addiction to processed foods, exploring perspectives from scientists, industrial influences, legal efforts, chefs, and food enthusiasts.",
"text": "The documentary explores how industrial food giants have captivated the senses with their enticing yet unhealthy offerings, shedding light on the alarming statistic that nearly 3 million people annually succumb to obesity-related health problems. Rémy, a franco-American, shares his personal journey from being raised on American fast food to falling in love with the rich culinary experiences of France. The film underscores the shift from eating for necessity to consuming what people like and crave, particularly sweets, ice cream, and cookies. In the past decade, the number of industrially produced food products in France has exploded, and the documentary reveals how the food industry manipulates purchasing behavior using tactics like appearance, touch, and smell. Despite the innate preference for sugar from birth, the constant availability of tempting options has led to a significant increase in calorie intake, emphasizing the need for awareness and understanding of food choices.",

Restoration aims to help corals adapt to changing conditions and ensure ecosystem functionality and health.\n\nMethods of Restoration:\n\nCoral Gardening: Collect and regrow coral fragments before planting them on reefs using techniques like Coralclip®.\n\nCoral IVF: Repopulate damaged reefs.\n\nCoral Aquaculture: Cultivate healthy corals in tanks.\n\nReef Stabilization: Consider surface conditions for coral settlement. \n\nScaling Up Restoration: Efforts to efficiently scale up restoration and enhance climate resilience are underway as part of the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program. Harnessing natural processes and targeting reefs for restoration allows the Great Barrier Reef to help itself.",

"text": "This summer, an international team of scientists aboard a drilling ship off Cape Cod pulled up thousands of liters of fresh water from deep under the seafloor. Expedition 501, as the mission is called, may have confirmed the existence of one of the largest hidden aquifers on Earth — stretching from New Jersey to Maine.\n\nThe discovery hints at a future where we might drill for freshwater offshore, beneath the ocean, not too different from the way we drill for oil and gas today.\n\nNow, scientists are asking whether offshore aquifers could become an emergency reserve for thirsty societies. Early estimates suggest the aquifer beneath New England might hold enough water to supply New York City for hundreds of years. And similar deposits may exist off Africa, Asia, and beyond.\n\nOver 50,000 liters of water are now undergoing analysis across dozens of labs. Six months from now, the science team will meet in Germany to compare results and publish their first findings.",

"text": "Access to water is crucial for all aspects of life. Anthropogenic global warming is projected to disrupt the hydrological cycle, leading to water scarcity. However, the timing and hotspot regions of unprecedented water scarcity are unknown. Using a probabilistic framework and a large ensemble of climate simulations, authors attribute the timing and likelihood of DZD events to human influence. Many regions, including major reservoirs, may face high risk of DZD by the 2020s and 2030s. Despite model and scenario uncertainties, consistent DZD hotspots emerge across the Mediterranean, southern Africa, and parts of North America. Urban populations are particularly vulnerable at the 1.5 °C warming level. The length of time between successive DZD events is shorter than the duration of DZD, limiting recovery periods and exacerbating water scarcity risks. Therefore, more proactive water strategies are urgently needed to avoid severe societal impacts of DZD.",

In addition, there are numerous resources for these authors to learn how to create documents that do not exclude anyone from accessing and using them. This does not require every author of information to become an expert in information accessibility for all forms of disabilities and/or special needs, but it does mean that all authors should aim to achieve a minimum standard of information accessibility that is universally beneficial for all users.\n\nThe Guidelines for Accessible Information are an open educational resource (OER) to support the creation of accessible information in general and for learning in particular. These Guidelines do not aim to contain all available information on accessibility or cover every aspect of the field, but to summarise and link to existing and useful resources which can be helpful for non-information and communications technologies (ICT) experts.",

"text": "The IEA had long warned that such concentration could pose serious security challenges, and these concerns turned into reality, marking a significant shift in global economic security. China’s rare earth export controls announced in October 2025 created major national and economic security risks worldwide, with potentially severe consequences for strategic sectors such as energy, automotive manufacturing, defence, aerospace, artificial intelligence and semiconductors. Stepping up global action on critical minerals security has never been more urgent. A clear priority is to develop diversified sources of supply for key critical minerals. The wide range of critical minerals, each with its own market characteristics, means that stockpiling is not a universal solution and its effectiveness depends on the specific mineral. Stockpiles can play an important role in providing emergency supply and protecting industries and jobs.",

"about": "This article explores the Archean atmosphere, revealing low oxygen, variable greenhouse gases, and hydrogen loss that helped oxidize Earth, shaping early climate and planetary evolution.",
"text": "The Archean eon (4–2.5 billion years ago) featured an anoxic atmosphere rich in CO₂, CH₄, and N₂, with negligible O₂. Despite a fainter Sun, greenhouse gases kept Earth's climate moderate (0–40°C). Life, likely microbial, emerged early, and cyanobacteria began producing oxygen, leading to the Great Oxidation Event (~2.4 Ga). Geological proxies from ancient rocks and isotopic data inform our understanding of atmospheric composition, climate, and biological activity. While the Archean biosphere strongly influenced the atmosphere, many uncertainties remain about gas levels, climate variability, and interactions with Earth's interior. Studying the Archean helps interpret exoplanet atmospheres and the potential for life elsewhere.",

"about": "The ReadWrite article by E. Newton states that smart thermostats are a cost-effective and convenient choice for making homes more sustainable. They can reduce heating and cooling bills, allowing easy temperature control through apps or voice commands.",
"text": "Smart thermostats offer cost-effective, convenient, green home solutions by potentially reducing heating and cooling costs. They provide accessibility and hands-free control, making them attractive to cost-conscious consumers and those with disabilities.\nThese devices also cut emissions and prevent wasted heat by maintaining consistent temperatures and avoiding unnecessary heating when the home is unoccupied.\nAdditionally, smart thermostats promote resource conservation by reducing energy consumption, even with non-renewable energy sources. They raise energy awareness and encourage energy-efficient habits.\nOn a broader scale, the widespread use of smart thermostats could aid decarbonization efforts, significantly lowering carbon emissions.\nDespite some privacy concerns, transparency and incentives can help overcome these barriers, making smart thermostats a practical and sustainable addition to any eco-conscious household.",
