"name": "Fontan Architecture: Flood Proof House Design, by Jorge Fontan",
"about": "Fontan Architecture, which participated in the design and reconstruction of nine homes destroyed by Hurricane Sandy in New York, outlines key strategies for hurricane- and flood-proof house design.",
"text": "Fontan Architecture outlines essential strategies to protect homes from flooding: elevating the house above base flood levels, using durable and sustainable materials (such as concrete, steel, and treated wood), reinforcing structural elements, and choosing flood or hurricane rated products. Critical design steps include consulting FEMA flood zone maps, determining Base Flood Elevation (BFE) and Design Flood Elevation (DFE), conducting topographic surveys, and building on high ground or using columns to raise the structure. Backup power systems and overall sustainability are also emphasized to ensure resilience.\n\nThe article also warns that without such measures, homes in flood-prone areas suffer greater risk of damage and failure during severe storms or rising water levels. It underscores the importance of combining smart design with regulatory knowledge, quality materials, and meticulous construction details.",

"name": "ScienceDirect: Reimagining growth futures: Overcoming the false binary between green growth and degrowth, by Jacob Hasselbalch, Mathias Larsen",
"about": "When imagining how a green transition can take place, the relationship between economic growth and environmental sustainability is commonly viewed in 2 ways: As ‘green growth,’ where the two can be mutually supporting, and as ‘degrowth,’ where they cannot",
"text": "The two are considered mutually exclusive, internally coherent, and competing eco-political paradigms. This article conceptually analyses the literature and maps standpoints within the two positions along nine dimensions covering national institutions, world order, and scientific cosmology. The authors find that there are substantial disagreements within as well as agreements between green growth and degrowth. In consequence, the authors argue that the literature is caught in a false binary. To constructively move the debate forward, it is proposed to give up the paradigmatic and polarised approach and instead embrace a multidimensional plurality of imagined growth futures.",

Today, however, these production networks are being reshaped by geopolitical dynamics, pandemic aftershocks and the emergence of disruptive technologies.\n\nThe world is entering a new phase of globalization — more fragmented, but also more digital, high-tech and dynamic. For Asia, this presents both huge growth potential and a massive downside risk to the development outlook, especially for emerging economies that do not move fast enough. The region’s future depends on its ability to stay open, innovate rapidly and adapt proactively to global shifts in geopolitics and protectionist policies.\n\nTo stay ahead, Asia must strengthen regional integration while remaining globally open, invest in infrastructure and human capital, foster industry clusters and specialization, balance resilience and openness.",

As emphasised in the recent ‘Draghi’ report, it is crucial for the EU to substantially increase private R&D investments in order to tackle our historic productivity gaps with respect to main global competitors.\n\nThe 2024 Scoreboard’s monitors the world's top 2 000 R&D investors, responsible for over 3/4 of R&D performed by the business sector globally, based on the financial information in the firms’ latest published audited accounts. Chapter 2 analyses the main global trends and benchmarks the EU’s top R&D investing companies against global competitors. Chapter 3 provides details per sector, and chapter 4 deep-dives on a subsample of the EU’s top 800 R&D investing firms. Chapter 5 analyses the R&D productivity from a long-term perspective, and combines the sample with data on Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) to delve into corporate innovation strategies.",

"about": "A new long-term study links both sugary and diet sodas to a higher risk of metabolic liver disease, showing that drinking more than one soda a day may raise liver disease risk by up to 60%, while replacing soda with water lowers risk.",
"text": "A major study presented at United European Gastroenterology Week 2025 found that both sugar-sweetened and artificially sweetened drinks are associated with a sharply increased risk of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). \n\nFollowing over 100,000 adults for more than 10 years, researchers discovered that consuming more than one soda per day raised MASLD risk by 50% for sugary drinks and 60% for diet sodas. Surprisingly, diet drinks were also linked to a higher risk of liver-related death, challenging the belief that they are a healthier choice. Scientists suggest that sugar promotes fat buildup in the liver, while artificial sweeteners may disrupt gut bacteria and appetite regulation. Although the study is observational and cannot prove causation, it highlights strong associations between sweetened beverages and liver disease. Encouragingly, swapping one daily soda for water cut MASLD risk by up to 15%, showing how small drink changes support liver health.",

"text": "The exhibition “Regenerative Visions. Light, Matter, Art” transforms artistic experience into ecological action, proving that creativity can actively participate in environmental regeneration. Consisting of four canvases and three sculptures inspired by Italian and Japanese natural landscapes, the installation uses natural pigments and AirliteⓇ photocatalytic paints developed in Lombardy. Activated by light, these paints neutralize smog, nitrogen oxides, and harmful airborne particles, providing the same purification effect as a mature tree per square meter. \r\n\r\nVeggetti Kanku builds a cultural bridge between Italy and Japan, celebrating harmony with nature through visual dialogue. The exhibition delivers a powerful message—beauty can regenerate, and sustainable innovation can begin with art, transforming buildings and public spaces into clean-air systems for the future.",

"text": "The 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to László Krasznahorkai, the Hungarian novelist and screenwriter, for his compelling and visionary oeuvre that, in the midst of apocalyptic terror, reaffirms the power of art. Krasznahorkai is known for his long, flowing sentences, bleak yet poetic depictions of human fragility, and novels such as Satantango and The Melancholy of Resistance, several of which have been adapted into films by director Béla Tarr.\n\nHis work explores humanity amid chaos, blending existential reflection with striking aesthetic vision, showing how literature can confront darkness while celebrating the resilience of the human spirit. Krasznahorkai is only the second Hungarian writer to receive the Nobel, after Imre Kertész in 2002. The prize was announced on 9 October 2025, with the traditional Nobel ceremony to follow in December.",

"text": "The new travel documentary Antarctica by Anton Ptushkin has conquered Ukrainian cinemas, earning over 7 million hryvnia in its first weekend—a national record for documentaries.\n\nThis is Ptushkin’s first big-screen film, capturing his solo journey to the Ukrainian Antarctic station “Akademik Vernadsky.” Shot during the changeover between the 29th and 30th Antarctic missions, the film follows his voyage aboard the icebreaker “Noosfera” from Chile to Galindez Island.\n\nTold with humor and sincerity, Antarctica combines stunning visuals, scientific storytelling, and personal reflection. It reveals the daily life of Ukrainian polar explorers, encounters with penguins, and the breathtaking beauty of icebergs and the open sea.\n\nBeyond adventure, the film highlights why Ukraine’s presence in Antarctica matters—as a place of science, diplomacy, and human endurance.",

"name": "Massive system of rotating ocean currents in the North Atlantic is behaving strangely — and it may be reaching a tipping point | by Sascha Pare for LiveScience",
"about": "An analysis of clam shells suggests the North Atlantic subpolar gyre has had two periods of destabilization over the past 150 years: one around 1920 and the other from 1950 through present.",
"text": "A new study indicates that the North Atlantic subpolar gyre, a key component of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) that helps transport heat to the Northern Hemisphere, has been losing stability since the 1950s and may be approaching a tipping point. Researchers analyzed clam shells to reconstruct 150 years of ocean conditions and found signs of ongoing instability, suggesting that the gyre could weaken significantly in the coming decades. Such a weakening could trigger more extreme weather in Europe and alter global precipitation patterns, similar—though less severe—to the impacts of a full AMOC collapse. While the gyre’s collapse is unlikely due to partial wind-driven circulation, scientists warn that its destabilization poses serious climate risks, emphasizing the need for further monitoring and study.",

"about": "A recent study found that Sri Lanka’s landmass protects the Andhra Pradesh coastline by reducing the intensity and frequency of powerful ocean swells from the southern Indian Ocean, thereby mitigating coastal flooding and erosion.",
"text": "A recent study has revealed that Sri Lanka plays a crucial role in shielding the Andhra Pradesh coastline from destructive ocean swells originating in the southern Indian Ocean. Conducted by researchers from the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) in Hyderabad, and the Department of Marine Geology at Mangalore University, the study utilized wave data and simulations to assess the impact of Sri Lanka's landmass on wave patterns reaching the southeastern coast of India.\n\nThe findings indicate that without Sri Lanka's geographical presence, powerful swells with wave periods up to 20 seconds could penetrate the Bay of Bengal and reach as far north as central Andhra Pradesh. These long-period swells, which carry significant energy, can lead to coastal flooding and erosion.",

"text": "Arctic sea ice hit its 2025 summer minimum without setting a record low on Sept. 10, despite a historically low winter maximum earlier in the year. Scientists say sea ice loss has slowed over the past 20 years due to natural variability in atmospheric and ocean systems, counterbalancing the impacts from human-caused climate change. However, researchers warn that this slowdown likely offers only a temporary reprieve, and that the continued escalation of global warming could cause rapid sea ice loss before 2050. The U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center for the first time switched to using Japanese sea ice data after losing access to key U.S. military satellite data, which had allowed for a continuous Arctic sea ice record since 1979.",

"text": "A strong marine heatwave is spreading across the North Pacific, bringing unusually warm ocean temperatures to the U.S. West Coast. Such oceanic events often trigger atmospheric changes via “atmospheric bridges,” altering wind and pressure patterns, and shifting the jet stream. Past similar conditions, especially during winters from 2013 to 2015, led to colder, snowier winters in the central and eastern U.S., and parts of Canada. Forecast models (ECMWF, NMME, CanSIPS) show continued warm anomalies in the North Pacific and weak La Niña conditions—patterns often linked to enhanced snowfall and colder air surges. Long-range forecasts hint at a southward-shifted jet stream and cold air outbreaks from the Arctic. While exact impacts will vary, trends point to a potentially colder, snowier winter for the U.S. and Canada, with Europe seeing milder conditions except in northern regions.",
