"name": "World's first coastal ecosystem status report released at WCF | by Yu Li for CGTN",
"about": "The report highlights alarming degradation of key coastal ecosystems worldwide and warns that increasing human activity and climate change are intensifying risks, calling for stronger protection and large-scale restoration.",
"text": "It presents the first comprehensive global assessment of 13 major coastal ecosystem types, including mangroves, coral reefs, seagrass beds, kelp forests, and salt marshes. These ecosystems support rich biodiversity and provide vital services such as shoreline protection, carbon storage, and fisheries resources. However, the findings show that over the past 50 years many coastal habitats have faced severe decline, with seagrass beds, coral reefs and mollusk reefs losing more than 1% of their area annually.More than 30% of seabirds, marine invertebrates and sea turtles dependent on these habitats are now threatened. The main drivers of degradation are coastal urbanization, overfishing, and global warming, along with agricultural expansion and resource extraction.\n\nAlthough 12.4% of coastal areas are protected, conservation is still fragmented and restoration remains limited. The report calls for coordinated global action, better monitoring and expanded protected zones to curb ecosystem loss.",

"about": "Scientific disinformation spreads widely across media, requiring coordinated strategies to strengthen public resilience.",
"text": "This article reviews how misleading scientific content spreads through social and traditional media, noting the role of algorithms, user dynamics, sensationalism, and false balance in amplifying inaccuracies on climate and health topics. Highlighted are detection tools, inoculation and prebunking methods, as well as collaborations between scientists and journalists. Practical guidelines for assessing scientific information and the importance of digital and scientific literacy are outlined. A scoping review of 85 climate-related misinformation studies identifies 17 thematic clusters, with strong focus on social media amplification, political denialism, and cognitive inoculation, alongside gaps in fact-checking research and non-Western contexts. An interdisciplinary, multi-pronged approach is emphasized for strengthening resilience to false scientific claims.",

"text": "This article examines how the convergence of digital repression, declining rights-based funding, and geopolitical hypocrisy threatens global democracy. It highlights how authoritarian and democratic governments alike weaponize technology—surveillance, AI, disinformation—to silence civil society and suppress dissent. Digital platforms, once champions of free expression, now comply with repressive regimes. Simultaneously, funding cuts and Western inconsistency erode legitimacy, pushing many nations toward authoritarian models. The article calls for sustainable funding, principled alliances, and a renewed commitment to digital rights and civic resilience.",

"name": "EU's Shocking Atomic Shift: Bloc Opens Billions in Funding for Nuke Projects, Rethinks Power Game | a video by Mint",
"about": "For the first time, the European Commission has listed nuclear fission as eligible for EU funding. The move is part of the bloc’s 2028–2034 draft budget and marks a potential policy shift.",
"text": "The EU is rethinking its stance on nuclear energy, potentially opening up funding for nuclear projects from 2028-2034. This marks a significant policy reversal, as nuclear energy was previously excluded from the EU budget. While this doesn't immediately translate to new plant construction, it signals a shift towards considering nuclear fission, decommissioning, waste management, and research for EU funding. This move is a win for the pro-nuclear camp, despite historical divisions within Europe, particularly between France (pro-nuclear) and Germany (anti-nuclear). The push for decarbonization and electrification is a key driver for this re-evaluation. Although renewables are projected to remain dominant, the debate on nuclear power in Europe is officially revived.",

"text": "John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret and John M. Martinis, used a series of experiments to demonstrate that the bizarre properties of the quantum world can be made concrete in a system big enough to be held in the hand. Their superconducting electrical system could tunnel from one state to another, as if it were passing straight through a wall. They also showed that the system absorbed and emitted energy in doses of specific sizes, just as predicted by quantum mechanics.\n\nThis year’s Nobel Prize in Physics recognises experiments that demonstrated how quantum tunnelling can be observed on a macroscopic scale, involving many particles. \n\nThis year’s laureates have thus contributed to both practical benefit in physics laboratories and to providing new information for the theoretical understanding of our physical world.",
