"name": "Longest known continuous record of the Paleozoic discovered in Yukon wilderness | by Stanford University for ScienceDaily",
"about": "New fossil discoveries in Yukon reveal 120M years of early Paleozoic ocean history, showing prolonged low oxygen levels that later surged, fueling the rise of complex life on Earth.",
"text": "A major fossil discovery along the Peel River in Yukon, Canada, provides a continuous 120-million-year record of early Paleozoic oceans. Scientists uncovered rock layers and fossils, including trilobites, brachiopods, and graptolites, that reveal low oxygen levels persisted in the deep ocean far longer than previously thought. Oxygen levels surged during the Devonian, supporting the rapid diversification of plants and animals, including predatory fish and early forests. The findings suggest evolving plant life may have increased ocean nutrients, driving oxygenation and reshaping marine ecosystems. While higher oxygen benefited many species, some, like graptolites, lost their low-oxygen habitats. This record offers unprecedented insight into Earth's early oceans, the Cambrian explosion, and the environmental shifts that enabled complex life to thrive.",

"text": "A major study by the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research and Utrecht University has revealed that around 27 million tons of nanoplastics—particles smaller than 1 micrometer—are floating in the North Atlantic Ocean. This is the first accurate estimate of such pollution, made possible by sampling water across 12 sites from the Azores to the European continental shelf and analyzing the plastic content using mass spectrometry. The nanoplastics likely come from the breakdown of larger plastics, river systems, and atmospheric deposition. Scientists warn these particles, already found in marine organisms and even human brain tissue, pose unknown risks to ecosystems and health. As they cannot be removed from the ocean, researchers urge immediate action to reduce further plastic pollution.",

"name": "Over a third of the Arctic boreal region now releases more carbon than it stores | by Jordan Joseph for Earth.com",
"about": "A new study shows the Arctic boreal region is changing in ways that affect the entire planet. It still takes up carbon dioxide overall, but more than 30 percent of this vast area now releases more than it absorbs.",
"text": "A major study led by Anna Maria Virkkala (Woodwell Climate Research Center) tracked CO₂ exchange across 200 Arctic sites from 2001–2020. While the region was a net carbon sink, 34% of the land acted as a CO₂ source, especially during fire years. Fires like Canada’s in 2023 erased carbon gains and, over time, made boreal forests net sources. Winter carbon loss often outweighs summer uptake, and longer thaw seasons boost soil respiration. Thawing permafrost and wetlands also release rising amounts of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Using field data, satellites, and machine learning, the team scaled estimates across the Arctic, though gaps remain, especially in Siberia. Open tundra shows the fastest shifts. With vast carbon stored in frozen soils, more year-round monitoring is vital. Fire, warming, and ecosystem changes will determine whether the Arctic helps slow or accelerates climate change.",

"text": "A major study presented at United European Gastroenterology Week 2025 found that both sugar-sweetened and artificially sweetened drinks are associated with a sharply increased risk of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). \n\nFollowing over 100,000 adults for more than 10 years, researchers discovered that consuming more than one soda per day raised MASLD risk by 50% for sugary drinks and 60% for diet sodas. Surprisingly, diet drinks were also linked to a higher risk of liver-related death, challenging the belief that they are a healthier choice. Scientists suggest that sugar promotes fat buildup in the liver, while artificial sweeteners may disrupt gut bacteria and appetite regulation. Although the study is observational and cannot prove causation, it highlights strong associations between sweetened beverages and liver disease. Encouragingly, swapping one daily soda for water cut MASLD risk by up to 15%, showing how small drink changes support liver health.",

"text": "A massive lithium deposit, estimated to hold 20 to 40 million tonnes of lithium metal, has been found near the Nevada-Oregon border. The deposit formed within a volcanic crater was created around 16 million years ago, and its lithium content is almost double that of the previously known lithium-bearing clay mineral. However, the mining of this deposit is disputed by Native Americans due to its sacred significance and historical events tied to the area. The U.S. expects to begin mining in 2026, which could provide a domestic lithium supply and alleviate supply concerns for various industries.",

"text": "A member-owned network of central banks and financial regulatory institutions in 84 countries, AFI connects and enables policymakers to develop effective initiatives to advance financial inclusion.\n\nOver the last 15 years, AFI members have introduced 1,130 financial inclusion policies, and financially included 850 million people.\n\nAFI’s philosophy is based on two key principles: that policies and regulations should be tailored to the country context, and that inclusivity should be at the center of the design of policy solutions. AFI’s cooperative model accelerates progress via knowledge exchange and peer-to peer engagement. Through AFI Working Groups, Regional Initiatives, Knowledge Products and Capacity Building events, members connect, exchange and share insight in order to develop and implement effective policies. \n\nAFI produces regular reports, commentary and analysis on the state of financial inclusion, and members share up-to-date information through AFI’s Data Portal.",

Due to HyStock, the Netherlands solves the tasks of \"green energy\" rapidly, two existing caverns at salt dome in Zuidwending have already been consider as pilot hydrogen storages. \r\nWhen specialists have demonstrated that it is safe will they proceed with the development of large-scale hydrogen storage having own experience, as well as UK and USA ones. According to plan, the installation with a first cavern will be operational in 2028. The animation on the website shows how caverns are made. It is planned to use pipes from HyStock's gas transport network when they would become available for the transport of hydrogen because of reducing natural gas supply. Hydrogen storage will be accessible to all parties wishing to store hydrogen, for short or longer term. This project is being implemented in part with Top Sector Energy grant from the Ministry of Economic Affairs",

The research indicates that applying this guideline to approximately 100,000 acres of restored or partially restored peatlands in coastal regions of North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia could immediately reduce US carbon losses by 2% to 3% of the total national goal. These restored peatlands can generate economic benefits for landowners through carbon credits sold on the international carbon market.",

"name": "The Voices of Glaciers: A Human Chronicle of Ice, Loss, and Resilience | by Grace Goss-Durant for Mountain Research Initiative",
"about": "Through voices of 35 witnesses, The Voices of Glaciers blends science and storytelling to reveal the human, cultural, and ecological impacts of rapidly melting tropical glaciers, urging urgent preservation.",
"text": "A new UNESCO–IRD publication capturing the stories of 35 people—from Indigenous elders to scientists—witnessing the rapid melt of tropical glaciers in the Andes, East Africa, and Southeast Asia. Combining glaciological research with personal testimonies, it reveals the cultural, ecological, and emotional impacts of ice loss, from disappearing rituals to threats to water security, biodiversity, and livelihoods. Since the 1980s, the Andes alone have lost up to half their glacier mass; by 2050, nearly half of tropical glaciers could vanish. Yet the book also conveys resilience, adaptation, and hope, blending science, storytelling, and Indigenous knowledge. Released during the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation 2025, it calls for urgent action to protect both glaciers and the cultures shaped by them.",

The report shows that all businesses depend on nature, yet harmful financial flows to biodiversity (€6.12 trillion in 2023) vastly outweigh investment in conservation and restoration (€184.6 billion), exposing a major finance gap.\n\nThe EU is responding by promoting nature-positive investment, including a roadmap for nature credits to mobilize private finance and reward ecosystem restoration. With all 27 EU Member States now part of IPBES, Europe is strengthening its commitment to science-based action and turning biodiversity research into practical economic and policy solutions.",

"about": "A global study finds most energy projects face major cost overruns and delays, with nuclear, hydrogen, and CCS most at risk, while solar, wind, and grid projects show stronger financial reliability.",
"text": "A new global study by Boston University researchers highlights the high financial and time risks associated with constructing energy infrastructure, with nuclear power plants showing the most significant cost overruns and delays. On average, nuclear plants exceed projected construction costs by over 100%, adding roughly $1.56 billion per project, and face the longest schedule delays compared with other energy technologies. These findings emphasize the challenges of scaling up nuclear energy quickly to meet global net-zero targets, especially when compared to lower-risk renewable technologies such as solar and wind, which tend to stay within budget and timelines. The study underscores the need for careful planning, improved governance, and risk management in nuclear infrastructure to ensure timely and cost-effective contributions to decarbonization goals.",

"text": "A new report by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) indicates that an investment gap of $18 trillion needs to be bridged by 2030 to achieve the transition to green energy and limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. According to the report, the transition away from fossil fuels requires a total investment of $37 trillion, with $19 trillion already committed, leaving a substantial $18 trillion gap. BCG recommends substantial investments in wind, solar, and grid storage capacities. The report also highlights the need for investments in bolstering electricity grids to accommodate increased solar and wind capacity and manage intermittent renewable power sources. Additionally, the report suggests that investments in green energy should accelerate the electrification of economies and a shift to renewable energy sources. Despite challenges, BCG believes that a green energy system can address the \"trilemma\" of sustainability, affordability, and security.",

"text": "A new report by the Clean Air Task Force (CATF) shows that Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) are nearing large-scale commercialization after over 50 years of development. Drawing on 103 historical and current projects across 23 countries, the report highlights steady technological improvements and recent breakthroughs that could allow EGS to scale rapidly and cost-effectively with sustained policy support, investment, and research. Key advances include higher production temperatures, dramatic reductions in drilling costs, record-breaking flow rates, and growing confidence from power purchase agreements, alongside new revenue opportunities from direct heat, lithium extraction, and other co-products. The report also emphasizes the potential of emerging superhot rock EGS systems, which could tap supercritical reservoirs above 375°C to deliver vastly greater energy output, illustrating EGS’s promise as a scalable, low-carbon, and reliable power source for the future.",

"text": "A new report by the SuperSymmetry Institute highlights Latin America’s growing role in global south competitiveness, contributing over two-thirds of its economic weight in the past two decades. At the Horasis Global Summit 2025, researchers identified five megatrends shaping cities: geopolitical tensions, rising economic influence, technological advances, urbanization, and climate pressures. São Paulo stands out as a regional growth leader, reflecting strong foreign investment potential and tech expansion—Brazil hosts 74% of Latin America’s deep tech firms. As cities face rapid urbanization and environmental challenges, innovation and sustainability have become key drivers. \n\nExperts urge Latin America to strengthen its competitive mindset, with the region now not just catching up but actively redefining global economic geography.",

"text": "A new report ‘Supermarket Audits: Stores' Untapped Potential in Fighting Plastic Pollution’, issued by #BreakFreeFromPlastic,\nthe first-ever global snapshot of the retail sector’s business practices in stores, focusing on their pivotal role in the global plastic pollution crisis.\n\nFrom August 28 to November 15, 2024, 496 individual audits of 247 retailers in 27 countries were conducted by volunteers from BFFP member organisations, as part of the supermarket audits. Through this global citizen science initiative, BFFP found that stores are doing the bare minimum to reduce their single use plastic footprint, except where strong legislation compels them to.\n\nThe report calls on supermarkets to leverage their unique market position to implement comprehensive plastic reduction strategies – these can influence how and what consumers buy, and can reduce plastic waste generation and plastic pollution globally.",
