"about": "All people on Earth depend on the cryosphere. Snow, glaciers, ice sheets, sea ice, and permafrost are significant reservoirs and sources of freshwater, sustaining ecosystems and supporting livelihoods.",
"text": "Approximately 70% of the Earth’s freshwater is stored in glaciers and ice sheets. However, GHG emissions are driving rapid changes in the cryosphere, leading to global consequences including rising sea levels, loss of water resources, accelerated warming, extreme weather events, and significant impacts on biodiversity, ecosystems, and human livelihoods. Coastal regions, low-lying islands, polar and high mountain areas are especially vulnerable.\n\nThe cryosphere is therefore one of WMO’s top priorities.\n\nWMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo took part in high-level events at COP29 to highlight the importance of the cryosphere.\n\nAn event hosted by Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon increased awareness of the importance of the upcoming International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation in 2025. In collaboration with UNESCO, WMO is facilitating its implementation.",

"name": "Biotic Control of Earth's Climate: An Ecohydrological Perspective on the Phanerozoic Temperature Record | by Allen Hunt and Didier Sornette for arXiv",
"about": "A unified framework linking silicate weathering feedbacks, ecohydrological optimality and vegetation-climate interactions to explain Earth's Global Average Temperature evolution over the Phanerozoic.",
"text": "The framework integrates two complementary processes: (i) solute-transport-limited weathering, which governs long-term carbon sequestration, and (ii) ecohydrological optimality, which constrains vegetation productivity through the balance between water availability and carbon uptake.Together, these processes establish two emergent climatic thresholds, around 15 °C and 33 °C, that define a stable corridor for the Earth system.\n\nAnalysis of ten independent studies (2019-2024) confirms the recurrent appearance of these thresholds in both modern ecosystems and Phanerozoic temperature reconstructions.\n\nThe resulting picture is one in which the biosphere acts as an active regulator of climate, modulating and at times overriding geochemical feedbacks. This framework unifies climate, tectonics, and life into a single ecohydrological system, offering a coherent explanation for the bounded variability of Earth's temperature across 500 million years and insight into its future resilience.",

"text": "The article examines the temporal dynamics of water quality in surface and groundwater systems, focusing on how seasonal patterns, hydrological processes, and human activities influence pollutant concentrations. Surface waters like rivers and lakes are highly vulnerable to contamination from domestic, industrial, and agricultural sources, especially during dry seasons when dilution is low. Groundwater, once considered protected, is increasingly affected by leaching, over-pumping, and waste mismanagement, with seasonal changes impacting parameters like nitrate, arsenic, and salinity. The study highlights the importance of using physicochemical and biological indicators, multivariate statistical methods, and high-frequency monitoring to detect pollution trends and guide sustainable water management. Findings emphasize the need for adaptive strategies to ensure safe drinking water, support irrigation, and protect ecosystems.",

"about": "LEO Satellite Networks (LSNs) are revolutionizing global connectivity, but their reliance on tens of thousands of satellites raises pressing concerns over sustainability and survivability.",
"text": "In this work, the scientists argue that the inefficiencies in LSN designs stem from ignoring the strong spatiotemporal structure of Internet traffic demand (which impacts sustainability) and the physical realities of the near-Earth space environment (which affects survivability). They propose a novel design approach based on sun-synchronous (SS) orbits called SS-plane, which aligns satellite coverage with the Earth's diurnal cycle. They also demonstrate that SS-plane constellations can reduce the number of satellites required by up to an order of magnitude and cut radiation exposure by ~23% compared to traditional Walker-delta constellations. These findings suggest a paradigm shift in LSN research from large, disposable megaconstellations to more sustainable, targeted LEO constellations.\r\n\r\narXiv:2508.17763",

This year, governments like Japan, Norway, and the Cook Islands identified commercially viable areas instead of expecting widespread exploration. The emerging industry brings geopolitical implications, necessitating ESG compliance and sparking debates on regulatory progress and environmental concerns. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the International Seabed Authority (ISA) are working towards a mining code, with Nauru's application being a key focus. In partnership with the Pet Sustainability Coalition (PSC), the industry is moving from intention to measurable action. This inaugural edition of the report is powered by the first results of the PSC Annual Benchmark Assessment, establishing a vital baseline for future progress. Key findings show that while the industry is keenly focused on climate risk and supply chain ethics, a significant gap remains in translating core consumer demand into sustainability-focused purchasing. To succeed in a future defined by intensifying global legislation, companies must adopt a proactive strategy that integrates sustainability into financial planning now, leverages the power of ethical claims, and prepares for shared solutions like the Pet Specialty Store Drop-Off Recycling Pilot.",

"about": "“Shared ocean, shared values”: A Commonwealth commitment to work together to protect and manage our ocean.",
"text": "The Commonwealth Blue Charter is an agreement by all 56 Commonwealth countries to actively cooperate to solve ocean-related challenges, and meet commitments for sustainable ocean action. The Blue helps Commonwealth countries work together on a fair, inclusive and sustainable approach to ocean protection and economic development.\n\nThe Charter identifies the blue economy as a key solution area for achieving SDG 14, emphasizing cooperative, action-oriented efforts to address ocean-related challenges—such as pollution, overfishing, habitat loss, and climate change—and to promote sustainable ocean governance. Implementation is organized through 10 Action Groups, each focused on a specific ocean theme (e.g. Coral Reef Restoration, Marine Plastic Pollution, Mangrove Restoration, Sustainable Aquaculture, Marine Protected Areas, Ocean Observation, Ocean Acidification, Ocean & Climate, Sustainable Blue Economy, Coastal Fisheries).",

"text": "The 2025 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought will be awarded on 16 December to journalists Andrzej Poczobut from Belarus and Mzia Amaglobeli from Georgia. EP President Roberta Metsola said the award honors “Two journalists whose courage shines as a beacon for all who refuse to be silenced. Both have paid a heavy price for speaking truth to power, becoming symbols of the struggle for freedom and democracy”. Poczobut, a journalist, essayist and activist from the Polish minority in Belarus, has been detained since 2021 and sentenced to eight years in a penal colony. His health has deteriorated, and his family is barred from visiting. Parliament has repeatedly called for his immediate release, denouncing politically motivated charges. Amaglobeli, director of Batumelebi and Netgazeti, was arrested in January 2025 for joining anti-government protests and sentenced to two years in prison, becoming Georgia’s first female political prisoner since independence.",
