"name": "University of California: New gel could boost coral reef restoration, by Alex Fox, UC San Diego",
"about": "Coral larvae are picky about where they attach and settle down. One of the ways they decide is by “smelling” chemicals in the water that are associated with healthy reefs",
"text": "Now, researchers at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Jacobs School of Engineering have developed a gel using nano-particles that slowly release some of coral larvae’s favorite “smells.” When the researchers applied the gel, called SNAP-X, to surfaces in lab experiments it increased coral larvae settlement by up to 20 times compared to untreated surfaces. SNAP-X could help overcome a major bottleneck in reef restoration efforts at a time when climate change is challenging the health of coral habitats. The gel is applied to surfaces as a coating and releases the coral-attracting chemicals for up to a month.\n\nThe research, published today in Trends in Biotechnology, was conducted with funding from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s Reefense program, which aimed to develop self-healing, hybrid biological and engineered reef-mimicking structures for coastal protection.",

Today, it is considered to be one the most inhabited in the world – there are more than 250 000 species, which is half of Costa Rica’s total number. Corcovado National Park is also home for plants, insects and birds. It is possible to spot several endangered inhabitants. According to National Geographic, this park is indicated as “the most biologically intense place on Earth”. There are 13 major ecosystems, such as rain forests, palm groves, beaches, mangrove swamps, etc.\nThe park is the ideal place for hikers and campers. Moreover, it is the place for enjoying kayaking, bird and wildlife watching.",

This means life might exist in dark, cold places without sunlight or heat, as long as there is water and cosmic radiation. The study suggests that places like Enceladus, Mars, and Europa could have these conditions, expanding the search for life beyond the traditional “habitable zone” around stars. These findings open new possibilities for future space missions to explore underground environments where life might survive in the solar system and beyond.",

"text": "The Climate Action Monitor assesses climate progress for 52 countries and shows that 2030 NDC targets remain insufficient for the Paris Agreement goals. Climate action has slowed sharply since 2021, with only 1% growth in 2024. Just 30 countries, responsible for 17.7% of global emissions, have legally binding net-zero pledges, while a 63% emissions reduction is needed by 2035 to align with the 1.5°C goal. Aggregate emissions remain 8% above the level required for 2030 targets, creating both an NDC Delivery Gap and a 2050 Target Consistency Gap. Intensifying climate hazards in 2024 highlight the risks of delayed action, with temperature projections showing up to a 6°C difference between low- and high-emission scenarios. The Climate Actions and Policies Measurement Framework confirms slowing action and uneven policies across countries, raising risks of carbon leakage. Governments must significantly increase ambition and credibility in their 2035 NDCs to close existing gaps.",

"text": "Earth has entered an “era of water bankruptcy” due to over-consumption and global warming, with 3 in 4 people living in countries that face water shortages, water contamination or drought.\n\nThat’s the conclusion of a United Nations report that has found most regions are overdrawing their annual income of rainwater and snowmelt and dipping into their savings of groundwater, which can take thousands of years to replenish. Seventy per cent of major aquifers are declining. Many of these changes are irreversible.\n\nTwo key drivers are agriculture and cities expanding into arid areas, which are getting even drier due to climate change.",

"about": "Countries in the Middle East have ramped up oil exports via pipelines to bridge the Strait of Hormuz gap.",
"text": "The Strait of Hormuz has been severely disrupted during the U.S.–Israel conflict with Iran, causing a dramatic drop in global oil and gas shipments, as the route normally carries about 20% of the world’s supply. In response, countries are turning to alternative pipelines such as Saudi Arabia’s East-West Pipeline, the UAE’s Abu Dhabi Crude Oil Pipeline, and the Iraq–Turkey pipeline. However, their combined capacity is less than half of what the strait handles, making them insufficient to fully offset the disruption. Additionally, these pipelines remain vulnerable to attacks from missiles, drones, or regional conflicts, further limiting their reliability. As a result, global energy markets face mounting pressure, with no effective substitute for the strait’s crucial role in oil transportation.",

"text": "The Mercosur bloc and four European nations signed a landmark free trade deal in Rio de Janeiro, creating an economic zone of nearly 300 million people with a GDP exceeding $4.3 trillion. The agreement, finalized after 14 negotiation rounds since 2017, covers goods, services, investment, and intellectual property, aiming to boost bilateral trade by granting improved market access for over 97% of exports. Leaders emphasized the pact as a response to rising global protectionism, particularly U.S. tariffs under President Trump that strained Brazil’s economy. \n\nThe deal promises tangible consumer benefits, such as lower prices on Swiss chocolate, Norwegian cod, and South American beef, while reinforcing Mercosur’s strategy to diversify trade partners. Brazil highlighted its parallel efforts to advance agreements with the EU, UAE, Canada, Mexico, and India, presenting this signing as a step toward stronger multilateralism and expanded global partnerships.",

"about": "Country Overshoot Days indicate when a nation's ecological footprint exceeds Earth's biocapacity, determined by the latest data from the 2023 National Footprint and Biocapacity Accounts, with leap year calculations extending to 366 days.",
"text": "Country Overshoot Days, determined annually on January 1st, signify when Earth Overshoot Day would occur if global consumption mirrored a specific country's residents. The 2024 dates rely on the 2023 edition of National Footprint and Biocapacity Accounts, covering the period from 1961 to 2022 and incorporating a mix of actual data and estimates for 2020-2022 results. Switzerland's 2024 Overshoot Day, calculated for May 27th in the leap year, demonstrates that if everyone lived like the Swiss, the planet's regenerative resource budget would be exhausted after 148 days. Countries with an Ecological Footprint per person smaller than the global biocapacity per person (1.5 gha) have no overshoot day.",

"text": "Essentials of Global Health is a comprehensive introduction to global health. It is meant to introduce you to this topic in well-structured, clear and easy to understand ways. Much of the course will focus on five questions: What do people get sick, disabled and die from; Why do they suffer from these conditions? Which people are most affected? Why should we care about such concerns? What can be done to address key health issues, hopefully at least cost, as fast as possible, and in sustainable ways? The course will be global in coverage but with a focus on low- and middle-income countries, the health of the poor, and health disparities. Particular attention will be paid throughout the course to health systems issues, the linkages between health and development, and health matters related to global interdependence. The course will cover key concepts and frameworks but be practical in orientation.\nMore than 70,000 people have enrolled in Richard Skolnik's course.",

"text": "One of the most obvious claims in our everyday life is the importance of water, often called the blue gold. Anyway, we are often incapable of shifting this importance in tangible actions aimed at protecting this resource and optimizing its use. Past and present anthropic pressure has heavily impaired fresh water, usually supplied for drinking water production. Water utilities and water-treatment practitioners were unprepared to effectively face the challenge of a growing high-quality water demand, especially in climate change scenarios. We need to think out of the box, creating multi-disciplinary panels of experts able to exploit the advances in chemistry, environmental engineering, and ICT to effectively join human health protection and economic and social development. In this sense, stakeholders’ involvement is essential to success.",
