"about": "As scarcity grows, rivers are turning from lifelines into instruments of power and conflict.",
"text": "Water scarcity is rising, fueling tensions over shared resources. Unlike energy, water has no substitute, and the same supply that sustained dinosaurs must now meet the needs of over 8.2 billion people. About 97% of Earth’s water is saline, and most of the 3% fresh water is trapped in glaciers, ice caps, or deep aquifers, leaving less than 1% readily available in rivers, lakes, and shallow groundwater. Population growth, water quality degradation, and climate change intensify pressure on hydropolitics. Risks of conflict increase where nations share water without binding treaties. Durable solutions require transparency and clear legal frameworks.",

"about": "Spain’s “Sea of Plastic” in Almería turns desert into a vast greenhouse network, producing millions of tons of vegetables year-round while reshaping farming with efficiency, innovation, and scale.",
"text": "From space, Almería appears snow-covered, but it’s actually over 15,000 greenhouses spanning 33,000 hectares—the largest concentration on Earth. Built in one of Europe’s driest regions, this system uses simple yet powerful techniques like plastic covers, artificial soils, and drip irrigation to grow crops year-round. The white roofs reflect sunlight, even cooling the region slightly while boosting productivity. Today, the area produces over 3 million tons of fruits and vegetables annually, feeding major European markets and transforming a once-poor region into an economic powerhouse.\r\n\r\nEfficiency is key: greenhouses use up to seven times less water and can be 30 times more productive than traditional farms. Farmers rely heavily on cooperatives and biological pest control instead of chemicals, improving sustainability. However, the system faces serious challenges, including massive plastic waste, pressure on aquifers, and difficult working conditions for migrant laborers.",

"about": "Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) have become an innovative vehicle for solving systemic problems in education, especially in the developing countries.",
"text": "These collaborative mechanisms unite government authorities, private companies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and international institutions to close resource gaps, drive quality, and expand access to education. PPPs enable the development of infrastructure, upgrade curricula, introduce technology and enhance teacher training, thus keeping education systems aligned with the demands of the day.\r\n\r\nDifferent PPP models like Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT), voucher schemes, and adopt-a-school programs illustrate how collective responsibility can propel educational development. Effective case studies like India's Model School Scheme, the Mid-Day Meal Scheme and international efforts like Bridge International Academies show that PPPs hold the key to better learning outcomes, mitigation of inequality and inclusive access to education. Still, challenges like inconsistencies in policies and pushback from vested stakeholders must be met for implementation to be optimized.",

"about": "Can you really be allergic to clothes? This article explains textile contact dermatitis, how fabric dyes and chemicals trigger skin reactions, and how to recognize symptoms caused by everyday clothing.",
"text": "Clothing allergies, known medically as textile contact dermatitis, occur when the skin reacts to substances in fabrics rather than the fibers themselves. In most cases, the culprits are textile dyes, chemical finishes, metals, or elastic components that come into prolonged contact with the skin. \n\nThese reactions can be irritant, caused by friction, heat, or trapped sweat, or allergic, involving a delayed immune response to specific chemicals such as disperse dyes, formaldehyde resins, nickel, or rubber additives. Symptoms often appear hours or days later as itchy, red rashes localized to contact areas. Babies and children are especially vulnerable due to thinner skin and constant exposure. Synthetic fabrics, dark dyes, and “no-iron” or stain-resistant treatments increase risk, while breathable, minimally processed materials reduce it. Understanding these triggers is key to preventing flare-ups and choosing skin-friendly clothing.",

It was never designed to be equitable, and its limitations go far beyond the current crisis.\n\nToday, democratic, economic, environmental, and humanitarian crises are intertwined and make the inadequacy of this model impossible to ignore. But it is important to be clear: the system is not failing because of the crisis; it was flawed at its conception. The present context simply makes structural problems more visible.\n\nThe dominant narrative is moving toward interdependence, a perspective in which all societies contribute, build, and make decisions, and in which proximity to communities, local legitimacy, and long-term trust matter more than financial leverage or bureaucratic compliance.",

"about": "The European Cross-Border Associations Directive would allow non-profits to operate across the EU and boost social impact, but despite strong support, the European Commission plans to withdraw it, sparking widespread opposition.",
"text": "Non-profits should be able to operate across borders. The European Cross-Border Associations (ECBA) Directive would allow exactly that – non-profits with members across Europe could be recognised and allowed to operate in all Member States. The Directive could promote the creation of new associations, new jobs and stimulate GDP growth, strengthening the competitiveness of our continent, while supporting a sector that provides critical social services. Additionally, it would be the first time the sector is recognised in EU legislation. \r\n\r\nAs discussions in the Council were taking place and after the European Parliament voted strongly in favour of the proposal, the Commission proposed to remove the Directive in their 2026 work programme. This is despite the fact that there has been no public call for its withdrawal, and this was not among the options considered by the Council.",

"text": "Social capital is vital for a wide range of contexts, from individual personal and professional success to organisational and group performance and community wellbeing, to name a few. This webinar goes beyond narrow academic definitions to outline a general approach capable of incorporating the complexity of social capital in a way that is easy to understand and apply to the real world. Every application of social capital is unique and requires a context-appropriate approach. Tristan will provide a framework for designing theory-informed practical applications of social capital and a brief description of the main ways social capital can be applied.\n\nThis webinar goes beyond theoretical abstraction, providing a nuanced and accessible approach to understanding and applying social capital in the real world. Rather than prescribing a one-size-fits-all solution, Tristan emphasises the uniqueness of each social capital application, acknowledging the need for context-appropriate strategies.",
