"text": "Deep Sea Reporter is fully funded by the Swedish foundation Voice of the Ocean, whose mission is to inspire and increase knowledge about the ocean.\n\nThe Deep Sea Reporter tells stories about – and explores in depth – issues related to what happens in the sea, and believes in the transformative power of emotions and storytelling to drive change in the way we treat the ocean, securing our shared future. It deepens knowledge and awareness of key ocean issues. And when it comes to all things marine, the Deep Sear Reporter takes a stand, because a healthy ocean is a human right. On the same basis, it defends life below the surface in all its stories.\n\nBased in Sweden with a global reach the Deep Sear Reporter produces impactful documentaries, stories, and articles, and serves as bridge builders connecting science, policymakers and the public with the ocean.",

"about": "Deep-sea tourism offers a unique experience for participants, who are often motivated by a mix of adventure, curiosity, and scientific interest, despite the high costs associated with such expeditions.",
"text": "The industry gained traction with the development of reusable submersibles, like the DSV Limiting Factor, which facilitated commercial tourism by enabling safe and repeat dives to the ocean floor.\n\nHowever, safety concerns loom large in this emerging field. The tragic implosion of the OceanGate Titan submersible in June 2023, which resulted in the loss of all five aboard during a dive to the Titanic wreck, raised critical questions about regulatory oversight and the future of the industry. Despite these challenges, many experts believe that deep-sea tourism will continue to grow, driven by advancements in technology and a persistent human fascination with exploring the uncharted depths of our oceans. Additionally, this form of tourism may promote awareness of the importance of ocean conservation, as it highlights the need to protect the vast marine ecosystems that remain largely unexplored.",

This is where the most destructive geohazards occur as this phenomenon causes the most devastating megathrust earthquakes and tsunamis on the planet. However, the specific role of the subducting slab in triggering those processes remains unexplored. The EU-funded DEEP-trigger project aims to study the mechanisms of aseismic slab deformation in triggering earthquakes, and will explore potential precursors of various depth, duration and amplitude. In situ observations will be conducted in southern Peru and central Chile. The researchers will use machine learning to systematise existing rich geophysical data from South America, Japan and Sumatra to unveil hidden connections between seismic processes in most endangered zones.",

"about": "The study presents a scenario-based model for converting underground parking areas into sustainable green spaces, showing how climate-adaptive, AI-assisted design can enhance energy efficiency, environmental performance, and user experience.",
"text": "This study proposes a scenario-based conceptual model for transforming underground parking structures into sustainable interior green spaces, directly addressing two core research dimensions: energy efficiency and user experience. The originality of the research lies in repositioning subterranean spaces—often overlooked in urban planning—as climate-responsive, multi-functional public environments. Using a site-specific case in downtown Rize, Türkiye, three design scenarios—passive green walls, active modular systems, and experimental micro-farming—were comparatively analyzed. These scenarios were assessed through AI-assisted simulations and climate-based performance evaluations in terms of environmental benefits, thermal regulation, carbon reduction, and experiential quality. Underground space leads to green design interventions, which in turn generate environmental, energy, and social benefits.",

"text": "The explosion of the platform created an unprecedented ecological disaster: 780million L of oil spread out in the ocean. \r\n\r\nOn September 19th, after several attempts, the slick is finally declared to be clogged by the American Federal government. But the explosion has immensely affected the local ecosystem and economy, threatening more than 400 species including wales, dolphins, manatees and numerous birds. \r\n\r\nIn October 2012, it seems possible that Deepwater Horizon moves again. At least, it is what indicates a new oil slick with an identical composition to the oil lost two years earlier. The slick could be coming from a breach in a dome located 500m below sea level.",

"text": "Conservationists, local officials, and agricultural leaders have raised serious concerns about the Defense Ministry’s planned military expansion in the Veluwe region of Gelderland, which could significantly harm protected natural areas and farmland. The Veluwe, known for its vital reserves governed by strict environmental protections, faces threats from increased nitrogen emissions, noise pollution, and military low-fly zones.\n\nThe conservation group Natuurmonumenten described the plans as “deeply troubling,” especially due to low-level flight paths that risk damaging sensitive habitats for breeding and migratory birds, marine mammals, salt marshes, and forests. While welcoming the exclusion of Veluwezoom—a protected Natura 2000 site—from heavy explosives training, the group urges government action to create new nature areas balancing defense needs with environmental protection.",

"text": "Following an overview of the post-2008 global financial system, this book analyzes economic and financial inequality, focusing on growth rates relative to liabilities and assets across data-available countries. The book also examines key issues in financial and environmental efficiency of growth and the evolution of financial and regulatory technologies. The final section explores how recent events—COVID-19, rising inflation, and the war in Ukraine—have impacted economic growth and financial assets/liabilities. The focal point of this analysis is the relationship between the speed of economic growth, the use of financial resources for funding that growth and levels of inequality. The green transition, as one of the most important challenges in the global economy, is an integral part of this analysis, along with the inequality in available financial resources for this transition and potential threats to global financial stability.",

The man who has spent recent years embedding sustainability thinking deep into the very fabric of TU Delft was honoured with a Golden Heron for the short film The Climate Fighters. \n\nThe Climate Fighters had already made a promising debut late last year. In this film, when a family decides to plant trees en masse to offset their CO₂ emissions, their good intentions set off a chain of effects that ripple through their community and eventually across the nation. A standout element is the film’s young protagonist, who holds a mirror up to her parents and neighbours, confronting them with the impact of their choices. It was precisely this fresh perspective that left many viewers deeply impressed at the premiere.",

"about": "The global assemblage of human-created buildings, infrastructure, machinery, and other artifacts has been called the “technosphere”, and it plays a major role in the present-day dynamics of the Earth system.",
"text": "The technosphere enables the rapid extraction of natural resources and the combustion of fossil fuels, impacting biodiversity and causing climate change while generating copious amounts of waste materials. At the same time, the technosphere supports humans in many ways, including the provision of food, shelter, transportation, and long-distance communication, and it is the main component of material wealth. Despite its importance, Earth system science has been slow to explicitly incorporate the technosphere as an integrated part of its conceptual and quantitative frameworks. \n\nThe authors propose a refined definition of the technosphere, intended to assist in developing functional integration with other Earth system spheres as well as social sciences. They also suggest a categorization system for the things that make up the technosphere based on how their end uses support human motivations.\n\nhttps://doi.org/10.5194/esd-16-979-2025, 2025.",

The following trends are highlighted: Grid modernization (metering infrastructure upgrade); ESG reporting; Grid flexibility (an upsurge in battery storage deployments is projected, in spite of supply chain impediments); Decarbonized fuels (energy and utility corporations recognize potential to gain advantage from renewable hydrogen); Transportation electrification (utilities expected to prioritize strategies to accommodate the estimated increase in electric vehicles).\nInnovation, investment, and industry convergence are identified as key drivers that can help overcome the industry's challenges. By embracing new technologies, making strategic investments, and fostering collaboration, power and utility companies can navigate the changing landscape and unlock new opportunities.",
