"name": "Consumer-based Carbon Costs: Integrating Consumer Carbon Preferences in Electricity Markets | by Wenqian Jiang and others for arXiv",
"about": "An increasing share of consumers care about the carbon footprint of their electricity. This paper proposes to integrate consumer carbon preferences in the electricity market-clearing through consumer-based carbon costs.",
"text": "Specifically, consumers can submit not only bids for power but also assign a cost to the carbon emissions incurred by their electricity use. The approach starts from a centralized market clearing that maximizes social welfare under consideration of generation costs, consumer utility and consumer carbon costs. An equivalent equilibrium formulation is then derived which incorporates a carbon allocation problem and gives rise to a set of carbon-adjusted electricity prices for both consumers and generators. It is proven that the carbon-adjusted prices are higher for low-emitting generators and consumers with high carbon costs. The paradigm maintains key market properties of locational marginal pricing, including revenue adequacy and individual rationality. A generator carbon tax proves equivalent to a uniform consumer carbon cost. Case studies with a three-bus and RTS-GMLC system show that consumer-based carbon costs foster greener market outcomes through redispatch and demand cuts.",

"text": "This textbook offers a comprehensive, interdisciplinary exploration of the complex entanglements between identity formation and political life in the 21st century. Bridging sociology, political science, and law, the book interrogates how identity is constructed, contested, and mobilized within political arenas.\nFrom the philosophical underpinnings of identity to its role in the justification of collective rights, the book systematically traces the evolution of identity politics and its influence on legal frameworks, public discourse, and digital culture. In nine chapters, the volume covers diverse themes: the ontological roots of identity, the tensions between liberalism and multiculturalism, the communicative dynamics of political identity in campaigns, the environmentalist aspects of identity and the legal mechanisms supporting collective rights. Particular attention is paid to the digital realm, where algorithmically mediated interactions reshape identity and intensify polarization",

"text": "The issue demonstrates the temporality of a strategic-relational approach, beginning with the historical divergence between Taiwan’s democratic trajectory and the PRC’s authoritarian resilience, moving to contemporary structural contestation reflected in Vietnam’s responses to China’s Belt and Road Initiative, and then to practical India-Taiwan cooperation in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. Together, these studies show that China may set key structural parameters, but regional states actively navigate, adapt to, and reshape these constraints through their own strategic choices. The future of the Indo-Pacific is therefore co-produced, not determined by China alone. The issue also includes Tonny Dian Effendi’s review of Constructing Political Economy with Chinese Characteristics.",

Chapters from across both the Global South and North consider emerging formations of citizenship and citizen identities among children and youth in formal and non-formal education contexts, as well as the social and civic imaginaries and practices to which children and youth engage, both in and outside of schools.\n\nRich empirical contributions from an international team of contributors call attention to the social, political, economic, and educational structures shaping the ways young people view citizenship and highlight the social and political agency of children and youth amid increasing issues of polarization, climate change, conflict, migration, extremism, and authoritarism.",

"about": "The article, authored by Jingjing Zong et al. and published in 2020 by JGR Solid Earth (AGU edition), delves into the attenuation characteristics of rock salt, with a focus on coastal samples from the Gulf of Mexico",
"text": "The study focuses on rock salt samples from the Hockley Salt Mine, Texas, and the Bayou Corne Salt Dome, Louisiana. The study utilizes the ultrasonic pulse-transmission technique and the spectral ratio (SR) method to evaluate elastic-wave attenuation in rock salt samples, which consist of over 95% halite. \r\nResults indicate that triaxial pressure increases Q and V by closing micro-cracks and compacting rock frames, while elevated temperature induces thermal effects and accelerates attenuation.\r\nThe article concludes with the establishment of empirical relationships between ultrasonic waves in salt samples. The implications for seismic imaging and their applying are discussed, emphasizing the relevance of this work in building subsurface models. \r\nThe paper is highlighted rock salt's importance in various geological processes and applications, and questions regarding the influence of composition, crystalline structure, pressure, and temperature on salt velocities and inelasticity are posed",

"about": "In the littoral zone, at the land–water interface of lakes, the areal productivity of aquatic vegetation rivals that of rainforests, resulting in a potentially very high carbon turnover.",
"text": "Whereas tidal wetlands at the land–ocean interface are included in global C budgets, lake littoral zones are currently not accounted for, despite the total shoreline of lakes being estimated at four times longer than that of the global ocean. \r\n\r\nThe study quantifies the littoral net atmospheric C sink using a mass-balance approach and a model of C export from the littoral to the pelagic zone. It argues that ignoring littoral C turnover in lakes can lead to biased estimates of continental C cycling, and shows that the estimated C balance of lakes may shift from a net C source to a net C sink, meaning that net C burial may exceed net C outgassing. \r\n\r\nThe study concludes that quantifying and modelling lake littoral C fluxes are essential for more accurate estimates of feedback between the continents and climate.",

Traditionally, from the viewpoint of nature conservationists, they are only positively associated when rehabilitation efforts are made to restore biodiversity in degraded lands due to extractive activities. Despite these conflicting relationships, in UNESCO Global Geoparks (UGGps), mining and quarrying can act as opening windows in the Earth’s surface exposing geoheritage. \n\nThis study aims to identify the contributions of extractive activities to identifying and protecting geoheritage within the context of the 213 UGGps designated by UNESCO. The methods included: i) mapping of geography, geoheritage, and mining variables from documentary and bibliographic review; ii) fieldwork; ii) descriptive statistics and linear regression techniques. 53% of UGGps presented their geoheritage features fully or partially exposed by mining or quarrying environments.",
