"text": "Housing conditions across the EU remained highly diverse. About 9% of the population could not afford to keep their home adequately warm. Around 68% of people lived in owner-occupied housing, while 32% rented; Germany was the main exception where renting was more common. Overall, 51% of the population lived in houses and 48% in flats, with flats dominating in cities and houses in rural areas. On average, there were 1.7 rooms per person and 2.3 persons per household. About 17% of the population lived in overcrowded housing, while 33% lived in under-occupied homes. Nearly 6% of people reported feeling discriminated against when looking for housing, with higher shares among those at risk of poverty. Between 2010 and 2024, house prices rose by 53%, rents by 25%, and construction costs by 56%. 9% of people in the EU lived in households with arrears on mortgage, rent or utility bills.",

"text": "Over the past decade, a rapid succession of crises has generated exceptional levels of political and economic uncertainty, affecting European firms and households alike. Armed conflicts, geopolitical tensions, the fragmentation and weaponisation of trade have given rise to a “polycrisis” context and made uncertainty a persistent feature of the economic environment. During the past year and with the start of the Trump II administration in the Unites States, uncertainty in trade policy in particular has reached unprecedented heights, raising concerns about its potential impact on European firms’ expectations and investment\nbehavior. While companies have so far shown a remarkable degree of short-term resilience, persistent uncertainty may weigh on business investments. This paper thus analyses and seeks to quantify the impact of trade policy uncertainty on investments in the EU using the most recently available data.",

"text": "U.S. imperialism has historically hinged on its control of global fossil fuel, leveraging it as a core mechanism of geopolitical power and global dominance. In the early 20th century, the USA emerged as the world’s preeminent oil producer, embedding its imperial power in the structures of fossil fuel-based capitalism. Corporate oil giants were monopoly formations instrumented by imperial force, enabling U.S. industrial ascendancy and global influence. As U.S. fossil fuel production reached “peak oil” and domestic oil reserves declined since the mid-20th century, the USA shifted from extraction-based supremacy to an imperial mode of governance centered on controlling global fossil fuel-based energy flows. This strategic transition, which was accelerated by the oil shocks of the 1970s, marked a deepening reliance on coercive mechanisms: military interventions, regime changes, and economic manipulation in oil-rich regions, particularly across the Middle East and the Global South.",

Seventy per cent of major aquifers are declining. Many of these changes are irreversible.\n\nTwo key drivers are agriculture and cities expanding into arid areas, which are getting even drier due to climate change.",

"text": "https://doi.org/10.1007/s12237-025-01665-3\r\n\r\nAccelerating sea level rise and the increasing frequency of storms are impacting coastal wetlands. Similar to salt marshes, coastal freshwater wetlands provide important flood protection and storm abatement services, but their capacity to keep pace with sea level rise and associated saltwater intrusion remains uncertain. Long-term monitoring of wetland soil surface elevation using surface elevation table and marker horizons (SET-MH) has been conducted in salt marshes, while forested wetlands have received comparatively less attention. In 2015, 18 SET-MHs were installed in one restored and two mature forested wetlands on the coastal plain of North Carolina, all of which have experienced saltwater intrusion in recent years. It was hypothesized that the restored wetland would exhibit higher surface elevation gains and that areas protected from saltwater intrusion within all three sites would also demonstrate higher surface elevation gains.",

Theoretical mechanisms suggest positive effects through agglomeration economies, including internal and external economies, reduced transaction costs, capital accumulation, and knowledge spillovers. However, empirical evidence from special economic zones, which are industrial hubs with strong incentives for resident firms, shows that high performance is not guaranteed, highlighting the importance of design and supporting policies. The paper emphasizes that considering Sustainable Development Goals, such as environmental protection, female labor participation, and human rights, is crucial to attract foreign direct investment interested in sustainability. It also notes that incorporating digitalisation, the service economy, and natural resources into development strategies can promote diversified and upgraded industries.",

"about": "Sumatra floods reveal ecological destruction, governance failure, and crisis of state legitimacy.",
"text": "The floods and landslides that struck northern Sumatra, Indonesia, at the end of November, killing over 1,200 people, leaving more than a hundred missing, and displacing over a million, reveal the cumulative impact of long-term ecological destruction, weak disaster governance, and extractive development policies that have eroded natural protections. While Indonesia has experience, laws, institutions, and early-warning systems, uneven preparedness, weak institutional learning, and shrinking civic space have limited effective response. The government’s framing of the disaster as solely extreme weather, its reluctance to declare a national disaster, and its refusal of international assistance have fueled public anger and legal challenges, raising questions of state accountability and human rights. This crisis underscores the urgent need for transparent, decisive, and people-centered action to protect lives, restore trust, and address the ecological drivers of disaster risk.",

"about": "Africa’s vast critical mineral wealth offers a once-in-a-century opportunity to drive sustainable development and economic growth—if the continent ensures fair deals, local processing, and transparent governance.",
"text": "Critical minerals like lithium, cobalt, graphite, and rare earths are now central to national security and the global green transition. With demand set to surge by 2050, Africa has a unique chance to become a key driver of economic growth and social progress.\n\nAfrica holds a third of the world’s critical mineral reserves, yet most are exported raw, and only a fraction is processed locally. Past experience shows that unequal deals can leave countries poor despite vast resources, as seen in the DRC. To avoid this, African nations need transparent governance, long-term strategies, and agreements that advance domestic interests.\n\nBy increasing local processing, investing mineral revenues in energy access and economic diversification, and ensuring political stability, Africa can turn its critical minerals into a foundation for sustainable development and lasting prosperity, rather than repeating the mistakes of the past.",

"about": "Understanding how the Earth and moon formed is important for piecing together the history of the solar system and answering questions like how long planets take to form, what planets are made of, and what makes a planet suitable for life.",
"text": "The Earth, like all the other planets in the solar system, started out its life as a disc of dust and gas orbiting the young sun. The dust particles were brought together by the forces of drag to form clumps of rock that grew into what scientists call “planetesimals,” which are tens to hundreds of miles across, and then to Mars-sized “protoplanets” by colliding with each other. \n\nEarth grew to its final size through one last major collision with another Mars-sized object. This last collision, also known as the “moon-forming impact,” was so large that—in addition to adding lots of material to the Earth—there was enough energy to vaporize some of the rock and metal from both the proto-Earth and the impacting object. This vapor formed a disc around the Earth that eventually cooled and clumped together to become the moon.",

"text": "This textbook offers a comprehensive, interdisciplinary exploration of the complex entanglements between identity formation and political life in the 21st century. Bridging sociology, political science, and law, the book interrogates how identity is constructed, contested, and mobilized within political arenas.\nFrom the philosophical underpinnings of identity to its role in the justification of collective rights, the book systematically traces the evolution of identity politics and its influence on legal frameworks, public discourse, and digital culture. In nine chapters, the volume covers diverse themes: the ontological roots of identity, the tensions between liberalism and multiculturalism, the communicative dynamics of political identity in campaigns, the environmentalist aspects of identity and the legal mechanisms supporting collective rights. Particular attention is paid to the digital realm, where algorithmically mediated interactions reshape identity and intensify polarization",
