"text": "University of Queensland researchers are urging governments to use newly created national data to protect the country’s last remaining ecosystems free of human pressures. The Human Industrial Footprint (HIF) map consolidated 16 environmental pressures into a single, high-resolution picture of ecosystem disruption across the continent. \n\nThe 2 new datasets map the extent of ecosystem disturbance across the country and show while about 30 per cent of Australia is still free or almost free of human pressures, many landscapes are becoming increasingly fragmented.\n\nLead author Dr Ruben Venegas-Li from UQ’s School of the Environment said the publicly available datasets could be instrumental in guiding conservation planning and keeping the landscape intact.",

"about": "It might soon be possible to measure a patient’s pulse, breathing, and blood pressure simply by scanning their face. This technology could offer a future tool for quickly assessing the severity of acute infection and other conditions",
"text": "The severity of an infection is assessed on the basis of vital signs, in other words the main signs of an individual’s physical condition. These vital signs are currently measured using several different instruments.\nHowever, a newly developed method that combines camera technology, software, and AI has the potential to produce equivalent results by scanning the patient’s face for 30 seconds.\nIn a new thesis from the University of Gothenburg, the camera-based method was clinically tested on more than 200 patients with suspected Covid-19, and was shown to improve both severity assessment and diagnosis",

"text": "Engineers from the University of Glasgow have used sophisticated computer simulations of bladeless wind turbines (BWTs) to identify for the first time how future generations of the technology could be built for maximum efficiency.\n \nThe findings could help the renewables industry take BWTs, which are still at an early stage of research and development, from small-scale field experiments to practical forms of power generation for national electricity grids.\n \nUnlike conventional wind turbines, which convert the kinetic energy of blades propelled by moving air into electricity, BWTs generate power through a process called vortex-induced vibration.\n\nIn a new paper published in the journal Renewable Energy, the team show how they used computer modelling techniques to simulate the performance of thousands of variations of BWT design.",

The key point of the initiative is the paradigm shift it proposes, as the study is carried out leaving behind the animal model and seeking a more ethical science, with experimental (in vitro) and computational (in silico) models.\n\nVISI-ON-BRAIN is designed to close the translational gap by building an integrated chain of predictive, reproducible, and clinically established experimental and computational tools, while training researchers who can operate at the interface of biology, data, engineering, and regulatory relevance.\n\nJosep M. Canals, professor at the UB’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, leads this project, which is part of the Horizon Europe programme and has received €4.5 million in funding under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Networks.",

"text": "Scientists have discovered that extremely faint magnetic fields generated in the earliest moments of the Universe still influence the cosmic web today. Using over 250,000 advanced computer simulations, an international team led by SISSA and several universities found that these primordial fields—billions of times weaker than a refrigerator magnet—leave detectable imprints on the filamentary structures connecting galaxies. The research, published in *Physical Review Letters*, establishes a new, lower upper limit for the strength of these fields, around 0.2 nano-gauss, and shows that including them in models produces a cosmic web that better matches observational data. These findings suggest that primordial magnetism helped shape the density of the cosmic web, accelerating the formation of the first stars and galaxies, and provide a benchmark for future studies using the James Webb Space Telescope to further probe the early Universe.",

They address challenges such as water security, climate change, and ecosystem preservation, spanning various scales and involving diverse stakeholders. These partnerships foster inclusive participation for a shared vision, serving as collaborative relationships—whether formal or informal—established for common purposes, risk mitigation, and resource allocation. "about": "The report by Richard Connor, published by UNESCO World Water Assessment Programme, explores the role of values in water resources management decisions. It highlights water's vital yet often overlooked role in homes, schools, workplaces, and healthcare.",
"text": "Water is essential for drinking, sanitation, hygiene, and overall well-being. Universal access to safe drinking water and sanitation in 140 low- and middle-income countries requires an estimated US$1.7 trillion from 2016 to 2030.\nThe report identifies substantial variations in water valuation among stakeholder groups, posing challenges in comparing water's worth across different purposes, including domestic use, the right to water, cultural beliefs, and biodiversity preservation through sustained water flows. To tackle these challenges, the report advocates for multi-value approaches to water governance, recognizing and harmonizing a diverse range of values. It emphasizes active participation from a broad spectrum of actors in water management decisions.\nMoreover, the report underscores the importance of expanding and reinforcing multi-stakeholder processes that integrate values like benefit-sharing, ecological considerations, and climate-resilient water management.",

"text": "A practical yet soulful roadmap for preparing, training, and thriving through ultramarathons, combining expert strategy with mental resilience to help runners go beyond their limits and embrace the journey.\n\nThe guide lays out how to create a strong aerobic base before adding ultra-specific long runs, structure back-to-back efforts, and master downhill running to spare your legs late in the race. It details the value of speed work for efficiency, strength training for durability, and a taper that keeps you fresh without losing fitness. Clear nutrition and hydration strategies help you develop a personal “owner’s manual” to keep energy steady from start to finish. Gear choices are framed around the latter stages of the event, when comfort and cushioning matter most. Mental preparation takes center stage: practicing positive self-talk, embracing discomfort, and finding meaning in the struggle so you can finish strong and discover the deeper rewards of ultrarunning.",
