"name": "International Day of Education - 24 January",
"about": "This day celebrates education as a human right and a public responsibility. In 2026, the focus is on empowering youth under 30 to co-create transformative, inclusive education for the future.",
"text": "Education is essential for peace, development, and breaking the cycle of poverty. The International Day reminds the world that access to quality education is a right for all, yet millions of children and adults are still excluded from this opportunity. The 2026 theme, \"The power of youth in co-creating education,\" highlights the crucial role of youth under 30, who make up over half of the global population. \r\n\r\nDespite being a driving force for change and innovation, they continue to face challenges like inequality and limited access to education. For education to meet the aspirations of young people, they must be actively involved in shaping it. This is especially important in the face of technological changes that are redefining how we learn, making it even more critical to involve youth in creating educational systems that prepare them for the future.",

To tackle these issues, we must profoundly reconsider our connection with nature and all living creatures to create a harmonious world.\r\nBiosphere reserves have demonstrated that it's feasible to inhabit this planet while forging a sustainable and harmonious rapport with the natural world.\r\nThe International Day for Biosphere Reserves beckons us to draw inspiration from the solutions already implemented in these regions and apply them universally, fostering sustainable development with unwavering respect for nature and all living entities. The UNESCO General Conference officially instituted this day during its 41st session in 2021 (41 C/37).",

"text": "The cryosphere, including glaciers, ice sheets, permafrost, sea ice and snow, stores around 70% of Earth’s freshwater, yet it is shrinking fast. Glaciers are losing mass every year; Arctic sea ice has declined by about 40% since 1979; and the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets are melting at accelerating rates, with long-term implications for sea level rise. Cryosphere loss already affects water security, ecosystems, infrastructure and disaster risk worldwide. \r\n\r\nIn response, the United Nations designated 21 March as World Day for Glaciers and proclaimed 2025 as the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation (IYGP 2025), led by UNESCO and World Meteorological Organization. The UN also declared 2025–2034 the Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences, led by UNESCO, to strengthen research, monitoring, education and policy action on cryospheric change. In addition, 22 March 2026 marks World Water Day, with a focus on water, women and gender equality.",

UNESCO is also undertaking a number of actions to fill the scientific knowledge gaps in this field.\nHealthy soils are essential for maintaining ecosystems and biodiversity, regulating the climate, producing food and purifying water. However, according to the World Atlas of Desertification, 75% of them are already degraded, directly impacting 3.2 billion people. And if current trends continue, this proportion will rise to 90% by 2050. \nThe Conference discussions have led to an action plan based on 3 key objectives: improving soil protection and rehabilitation, filling the scientific knowledge gaps in this field, and strengthening the commitment of young people and communities through education and training programmes.",

"text": "Beyond their postcard image of sun, sand, and sea, the Pacific Islands hold remarkable geological heritage with potential for conservation, education, and sustainable livelihoods. UNESCO’s work with the Pacific Community (SPC) and the Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) aims to identify geosites and create the region’s first geoparks, inspired by the Waitaki Whitestone Geopark in New Zealand—the only one currently in the South Pacific. From Tonga’s active volcanoes and Tuvalu’s historic atolls to Samoa’s lava fields, these landscapes reveal the Pacific’s dynamic geological story. Researchers like Dr. Aleni Fepuleai promote geotourism to support local economies while preserving heritage. UNESCO’s new animated film invites viewers to imagine how geoparks could unite science, culture, and community across the Pacific.",

"about": "An annual, inclusive intergovernmental forum to support follow-up and review of progress on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the regional level.",
"text": "Theme: “Transformative, equitable, innovative and coordinated actions for the 2030 Agenda and its SDGs for a sustainable future for all” .\r\n\r\nThis regional platform aims to inform, empower, and support Asia-Pacific countries (especially least developed countries, landlocked developing countries and small island developing States) in their efforts to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and their targets set out by the 2030 Agenda by identifying regional trends and sharing best practices and lessons learned. The Forum convenes United Nations system bodies, member States, international organisations, civil society, and other stakeholders whose reflections feed into and inform the 2026 High-level Political Forum (HLPF) in New York, which reviews sustainable development progress at the global level.",
