"name": "The open ocean: Status and trends volume 5 - Summary for policy makers",
"about": "The UNEP report edited by Peter Saunders and offers a comprehensive overview of the open ocean and its ecosystems, emphasizing their link to human well-being and coastal regions.",
"text": "The report highlights the open ocean's critical role in sustaining the biosphere and supporting global socio-economic well-being. With 99% of habitable volume, the ocean faces climate-induced challenges like warming, deoxygenation, and acidification, endangering ecosystems and human welfare.\n\nThemes such as governance, climate change, ocean ecosystems, fisheries, pollution, and human-ocean relationships are covered, providing insights into their connection. The report utilizes indices, indicators, and expert assessments to address uncertainties due to limited ocean monitoring.\n\nKey findings reveal that ocean warming dominates climate energy storage, accounting for 93% of excess heat from 1971 to 2010. Assessing the cumulative impact of human activities on marine ecosystems is crucial to understand regional conditions and stressor contributions.\n\nThe report presents key messages and recommendations based on a baseline assessment of human well-being and the state of the open ocean.",

"text": "The European Commission adopted the new circular economy action plan (CEAP) in March 2020. It is one of the main building blocks of the European Green Deal, Europe’s new agenda for sustainable growth. The EU’s transition to a circular economy will reduce pressure on natural resources and will create sustainable growth and jobs. It is also a prerequisite to achieve the EU’s 2050 climate neutrality target and to halt biodiversity loss.\n\nThe new action plan announces initiatives along the entire life cycle of products. It targets how products are designed, promotes circular economy processes, encourages sustainable consumption, and aims to ensure that waste is prevented and the resources used are kept in the EU economy for as long as possible.\n\nIt introduces legislative and non-legislative measures targeting areas where action at the EU level brings real added value.",

Defined as “arenas,” these sectors capture an outsized share of economic expansion and see rapid shifts in market leadership. Analysis of 2005–2020 data shows that today’s arenas—such as e-commerce, biopharma, EVs, and cloud services—have far outperformed other sectors. Three forces often spark new arenas: technological or business model breakthroughs, escalatory investments, and large or growing markets. Emerging candidates include AI, cybersecurity, robotics, biotech, future air mobility, and more, each offering significant opportunities for companies, investors, workers, and policymakers.",

"about": "German scientists at Bergakademie Freiberg Technical University have published the results of own studies on prediction methods of ground subsidence above Salt Caverns for Energy Storage (predominantly, above hydrogen storages)",
"text": "Recently, it is suggested to use salt caverns to store hydrogen in context industry 4.0 for green future. The unique nature of salt caverns in the context of energy storage require special attention since salt rock is very moving and flexible enough. As a result, deformation of earth's surface develop above the underground chambers, which can have a negative effect on state of surface infrastructure. Asymmetrical surface subsidence is the most dangerous, and can lead to complicated ecological consequences. This study provides an analysis of ground movement prediction methods to determine the most appropriate approach. A focus research is the investigation of the suitability of salt caverns to assess the impact on the environment, prevent the damage of objects. Future research directions include implementing the proposed model in relation to real-world data for specific geological objects",

In order to succeed in green transition, utilities need to focus on a broader range of performance metrics, including Customer satisfaction, Innovation and Sustainability.\nThe report identifies specific steps that utilities can take to improve their performance in these areas:\n- Invest in CRM systems to better understand the needs of their customers.\n- Develop new products and services, such as smart home and building automation services.\n- Partner with other organizations, such as technology companies and universities, to develop new technologies and business models.\n- Invest in renewable energy and energy efficiency projects etc.\nBy 2035, utilities could invest more than US$4 tn in cumulative new investment across fossil supply displacement, new long-haul and intrastate transmission and electrification capital.",

"text": "While instability and uncertainty drives attention to the Western Pacific and the Middle East’s critical chokepoints, the Atlantic is the world’s most heavily traveled ocean, and a critical conduit for prosperity. It has become one of the world’s principal energy reservoirs, and pan-Atlantic commercial flows rival – and in such areas as services, investment, and digital commerce exceed – those of the Pacific. The Atlantic data seaway, already the busiest in the world, is building out fast, and its waters lap the shores of both the major nations of the West and key players of the global South. Identifying shared interests in cross-cutting approaches to the Atlantic – from trade to maritime domain awareness to climate change to countering illegal fishing – is a key goal of the Partnership.\n\nIn 2024 hosted an online discussion on what is at stake and what to expect for the Atlantic partnership moving forward.",

Dr. Saunders, an Honorary Research Fellow at the British Museum, has a rich history with the IIC, having served as a fellow, council member, and editor of Studies in Conservation. The lecture, part of The Courtauld's Research Forum, delves into contemporary art conservation challenges and the importance of collaborative strategies among conservators, artists, and institutions.",

"text": "Yoga’s benefits go far beyond flexibility and strength, influencing both mind and body. Combining physical poses, breathwork, and mindfulness, it can reduce stress, lower inflammation, and enhance emotional regulation. Research shows yoga increases grey matter in brain regions tied to memory, learning, and decision-making, while boosting neurotransmitters like GABA to improve mood and reduce anxiety. For PTSD sufferers, trauma-informed yoga therapy offers tailored practices that cultivate safety, grounding, and self-regulation. Studies suggest it may also slow cognitive decline, support healthy aging, and complement treatments for chronic pain, epilepsy, diabetes, and cancer recovery. \n\nWhile scientists are still exploring which elements drive these effects, practitioners consistently report a profound sense of calm, resilience, and mental clarity, highlighting yoga’s enduring potential as a mind-body intervention.",

"about": "Approximately 40 titanium deposits including one unique & 13 large ones represent the mineral and raw material base of titanium in Ukraine. It is believed that the titanium industry will become one of the foundations for attracting foreign investment",
"text": "According to the US Geological Survey, as of 2021, Ukrainian ilmenite accounted for about 5% of the world production of ores used for the production of titanium, although, currently, titanium ores are mined in Ukraine only from placer deposits (about 10% of all explored reserves).\r\nThe military aggression of Russian against Ukraine significantly changed the situation on the world titanium market and affected the development of the titanium industry in Ukraine, in particular, the mining of ores containing titanium and the production of titanium products. The volume of exports of ores containing titanium in 2022 decreased by more than 40%. In addition, the sanctions policy and the return to state ownership of titanium assets may lead to a redistribution of the market.\r\nDespite the hostilities, Ukrainian titanium assets remain attractive for investment. Analysts believe that titanium can become one of the foundation elements for the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine",

"text": "Marcus du Sautoy overturns the idea of maths as cold or mechanical, revealing how artists and composers have long relied on mathematical structures. Giotto, Piero della Francesca and Leonardo da Vinci used geometry, perspective and the golden ratio; Bach created canons that anticipate the Möbius strip; Debussy built La Mer around Fibonacci numbers; Pollock’s drip paintings display fractal patterns that help maintain their complexity at any scale. Du Sautoy explains how circles, primes, symmetry, randomness and fractals act as creative templates across different art forms, while also arguing that mathematics itself depends on imagination and should strive for beauty. By presenting maths as a bridge between the arts and sciences, he encourages readers to see it as a source of aesthetic insight rather than a rigid discipline.",

The world’s first commercial LAES plant, developed by Highview Power in Carrington, England, is scheduled to begin operation in 2026. The technology works by using surplus renewable electricity to cool and compress air into a liquid, which is stored in insulated tanks. When electricity demand rises, the air is reheated and expanded to drive turbines and generate power.\n\nWith efficiency rates up to 70%, long-duration storage capacity, and no geographic constraints, LAES could become a powerful alternative to lithium-ion batteries and pumped hydro, providing grid stability and flexible backup power. It also uses readily available materials and emits no pollutants.",

It traces the journey of a typical t-shirt, starting from cotton farms that require significant water and pesticides. \n\nThe process continues through textile mills where cotton is transformed into fabric, treated with bleaches and dyes, some containing harmful chemicals. The video highlights the resource-intensive nature of laundry and advocates for more sustainable practices: shopping secondhand, choosing recycled or organic fabrics, reducing washing, and properly disposing of old clothes. "text": "Why does fast fashion, despite its environmental and ethical consequences, continue to thrive? This video examines how platforms like TikTok and e-commerce giants like Amazon have reshaped our perceptions of cost, value, and trends. Brands like Shein exploit these shifts, fueling a cycle of overconsumption and waste. While many of us recognize the harm, our habits often tell a different story. Learn how ultra-fast fashion manipulates consumers, why trends are accelerating, and what steps we can take to slow down and shop more sustainably. Let's rethink our choices—before it’s too late.",

"name": "The latest types of comprehensive environmental monitoring in areas of flooded salt mines",
"about": "In April 2023, the 'Frontiers in Earth Science' published an article by K. Pukanská (Slovakia) et al., discussing a multi-sensor and multi-temporal approach to monitoring earth surface deformations above flooded salt mines, using the example of Solotvyno",
"text": "The article discusses the threat posed by salt mines, particularly abandoned ones, to populated areas, infrastructure, and the environment, with a focus on the Solotvyno salt mines in Ukraine. Mining activities have led to significant subsidence, earth surface deformation, and sinkhole formation, impacting the landscape and infrastructure. The study employs multi-sensor and multi-temporal monitoring, including satellite radar data, optical imagery, and UAV photogrammetry, to assess the active deformation zone. The research emphasizes the environmental hazards and proposes a high-precision monitoring system. Results indicate ongoing subsidence trends, the emergence of new sinkholes, and potential ecological risks. The article underscores the importance of continuous monitoring using InSAR technology to prevent further damage to the surroundings and infrastructure. It also proposes a geodetic solution for permanent satellite monitoring to establish a subsidence monitoring network",
