"text": "The Global Innovation Index's Science and Technology (S&T) Cluster ranking pinpoints major hubs of global science and technology activity, determined through a geocoding method that maps addresses and names from patent-filing and scientific article publication with 96% accuracy. Notable findings include East Asia dominating the top five clusters, with Tokyo-Yokohama leading globally, and the United Kingdom's Cambridge cluster and the US's San Jose-San Francisco showing the most intensive S&T activity in proportion to population density. In 2023, China has 24 identified S&T clusters, surpassing other nations, while middle-income economies, including India, demonstrate notable growth in S&T output, and certain emerging economies like Brazil, Türkiye, and India showcase rapid advancements in their clusters.",

Hon. Ed Miliband, UK Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero. These countries were selected for their strong political commitment, readiness for policy and regulatory action, and regional leadership.",

"text": "The Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework calls for the rapid global expansion of protected areas in response to ongoing biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation. A major justification for this expansion lies in the benefits that protected areas can provide to adjacent human communities. However, comparatively little attention has been given to the ways in which policy and management can enhance or support these benefits. \r\n\r\nTo address this gap, this study examined the factors influencing the magnitude of vegetation spillover effects from a candidate set of 12,513 protected areas in Australia. Spillovers were defined as differences in vegetation conditions outside protected areas that occur as a direct consequence of their establishment. In 2020, 71% (2,189) out of the 3,063 protected areas for which full analysis was possible had a positive spillover effect of 0.1 or greater on at least 1 of 10 vegetation cover classes.",

During that time, they documented the horrific human cost of the war, providing the world with a firsthand account of the devastation and suffering inflicted on the city's residents. \nTheir reporting included iconic images of an injured pregnant woman being rushed to medical help and Russia firing on civilian targets. These images and their accompanying stories helped to galvanize international support for Ukraine and pressure Russia to open an evacuation route from Mariupol. \nThe AP's reporting from Mariupol was a testament to the power of journalism to bear witness to the truth and to hold those in power accountable. Their work has had a lasting impact on the world's understanding of the war in Ukraine.",

"text": "Today, 2.2 billion people in the world lack access to safe drinking water. In the United States, more than 46 million people experience water insecurity, living with either no running water or water that is unsafe to drink. The increasing need for drinking water is stretching traditional resources such as rivers, lakes, and reservoirs.\n\nTo improve access to safe and affordable drinking water, MIT engineers are tapping into an unconventional source: the air. The Earth’s atmosphere contains millions of billions of gallons of water in the form of vapor. If this vapor can be efficiently captured and condensed, it could supply clean drinking water in places where traditional water resources are inaccessible.\n\nWith that goal in mind, the MIT team has developed and tested a new atmospheric water harvester and shown that it efficiently captures water vapor and produces safe drinking water across a range of relative humidities, including dry desert air.",

"text": "Grasslands, especially natural and semi-natural ones, support biodiversity and provide vital ecosystem services (ES) like water regulation, carbon storage, erosion control, pollination, and cultural benefits. This study compares grasslands in southern Africa (SA) and northwest Europe, revealing that while SA’s larger natural grasslands better meet ES demands, Europe’s smaller semi-natural grasslands often fall short. Three ES bundles were identified: water and fodder production, cultural services tied to livestock, and biodiversity-related regulation (e.g., pollination). Greenhouse gas mitigation appeared unlinked to these. Despite global grassland decline, strategic management can reduce trade-offs and boost synergies among ES. The study urges greater inclusion of grasslands in food security and land-use policies to harness their full value in sustainable agriculture and livelihoods.",

"text": "Here’s a summary about lithium-ion battery recycling challenges and solutions in India, based on the text you shared:\n\nLithium-ion batteries are crucial for India’s growing electric vehicle (EV) market and renewable energy storage, but recycling them remains a major challenge due to complex and non-standardized battery designs. Most batteries are imported or assembled with a focus on performance and cost, not ease of recycling. For example, EV battery packs—especially in two- and three-wheelers—are tightly sealed and hard to dismantle safely, often requiring skilled technicians and specialized tools. Informal dismantling by scrap workers adds safety and environmental risks.\n\nIndia generates around 70,000 tons of lithium battery waste annually, with expected EV battery retirements reaching 800,000 packs per year by 2030. Recycling is complicated by varied battery chemistries, forms, and designs, which demand different treatment methods and reduce economic predictability.",

Global agreements highlight nature, but solutions are fragmented. Nature-based solutions lack investment due to complexity and measurement challenges, receiving only 15% of funding compared to traditional climate solutions. To make them mainstream, leaders must set science-based targets, integrate nature into decision-making, strengthen policy processes, ensure just investments, project finance, and deepen capital markets. The report builds on COP27's transformative agenda, aiming for collective action in global nature financing at COP28.",

"about": "The WHO states that safe WASH practices, covering Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene, are essential for global health, widespread sanitation issues, and inadequate hygiene practices to prevent diseases and promote well-being.",
"text": "Practicing the WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Personal Hygiene) is essential for health, livelihoods, and community resilience. Inadequate WASH, contributing to contaminated water and poor hygiene, caused approximately 829,000 diarrhoeal deaths in 2016, impacting diseases like respiratory infections, malnutrition, and malaria. Improving sanitation, including safe disposal, is crucial, given that nearly half the global population lacked proper sanitation in 2020. Personal hygiene, including handwashing, is vital, with 2.3 billion lacking adequate facilities in 2020, contributing to infectious diseases and 165,000 diarrhoeal deaths in 2016.",

"about": "Innovative technologies in the field of geothermal energy focus on three areas: resource assessment, resource development, and resource utilisation and management for electricity, heat supply and mineral extraction (lithium).",
"text": "They include increased electric power system efficiency, novel and optimised drilling technologies, underground thermal energy storage, new exploration methods, closed loops, smart systems, and 3D models.\n\nAdvanced plants and technologies include ultra-deep geothermal systems, enhanced geothermal systems, advanced geothermal systems, supercritical geothermal systems. They allow access to vast geothermal resources, which would otherwise remain largely unexploited. Advanced geothermal systems have ongoing commercially viable projects in the US and Europe.\n\nGround source geothermal heating and cooling is a well-established technology, which is currently experiencing the opening of new markets and continuous growth. Geothermal heat pumps are among the most-performant energy-efficient technologies to transfer heat from/to the ground for heating and cooling buildings. Innovation focus here is on new materials and investment costs reduction.\n\nSource: Briefing requested by the ITRE Committee",
