"name": "You're Being Lied To About Ocean Plastic | Truth Complex | a video by Business Insider",
"about": "Plastic pollution is getting worse — despite widespread public awareness of the problem, massive investment in recycling, and years of pledges to stop polluting. So what do we get wrong when we talk about ocean plastic? A lot, it turns out.",
"text": "This video exposes common misconceptions about ocean plastic. It reveals that the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is not a visible island of trash, but a diffuse accumulation of plastic, primarily fishing gear, unlike the misleading images often circulated. The video also highlights that littering is a minor contributor to ocean plastic compared to mismanaged waste. Furthermore, it discusses the limitations of recycling and introduces paint and tires as significant, often underestimated, sources of microplastics. The core message emphasizes the need to reduce plastic production, rather than solely focusing on cleanup or individual actions, as massive institutions and fossil fuel industries actively resist these efforts.",

"text": "Groundwater, the hidden reservoir beneath the Earth's surface, is an invaluable source of freshwater that permeates through soil, sand, and rock layers, sustaining life above ground. It serves as a lifeline for communities worldwide, providing essential drinking water and supporting agriculture, industry, and natural ecosystems. However, this vital resource is facing mounting threats from overexploitation and contamination, prompting calls for urgent legal protections and comprehensive monitoring efforts. Despite its invisibility to the naked eye, groundwater plays a pivotal role in the intricate web of life on Earth, comparable in significance to oxygen. As demands on this resource continue to grow, safeguarding its long-term sustainability is paramount to ensure the well-being of current and future generations.",

The congress addressed four core questions around dams’ roles in climate adaptation, safety under hydrological extremes, performance in earthquakes, and future-fit infrastructure.\n\nICOLD also maintains the World Register of Dams, with more than 55,000 entries contributed by national committees, and a Technical Dictionary translating 3,000+ terms across multiple languages.",

"text": "As the war persists, Ukraine faces growing damage, estimated at $411 billion for recovery. However, the nation is now at a pivotal point. After the conflict, Ukraine can reshape its economy towards lower-carbon sectors, boosting economic well-being, energy security, and environmental protection.\nBefore the war, Ukraine had a carbon-intensive economy, and the ongoing conflict has caused significant losses. A 10-year recovery plan has climate-positive and non-climate-positive elements, including investments in fossil fuels that could hinder climate goals.\nSigns of green recovery ambition have emerged, with new legislation supporting renewable energy and phasing out coal power plants. The report suggests replacing \"dirty\" policies with greener alternatives, improving neutral policies, and filling gaps with green solutions. This shift presents Ukraine with the opportunity to become a global climate leader and build a sustainable future.",

In the ballet, the climate change is turned into a live performance, presenting a changing Arctic environment. The audience witnesses the choreography embodying the reasons for the icecap’s collapse. The images of global warming’s influence on icy climes are performed in the ballet.",

"text": "With the labor market cooling, we ask whether the gig economy provides a meaningful source of income support to those who experience job loss or reduced hours and what it can tell us about the current state of the labor market.\n\nEstimates of employment in the gig economy are wide-ranging, but the most credible suggest that 5-15% of the US population participates in gig work, broadly defined as any income-generating work outside of standard, long-term, direct-hire employment. Estimates of participation in platform-based gig work such as Uber are lower at 2-4% of the population. Most surveys that have been run for multiple years suggest, perhaps surprisingly, that growth in total gig employment has been modest at best, though growth in the number of platform gig workers has been much faster at roughly 5-8% annualized over the past few years.",

"text": "The International Training Centre of the ILO (ITCILO) is exploring how neurotechnology can transform education and lifelong learning, making it more adaptive, inclusive, and human-centered. As the world changes rapidly through digital transformation and technological disruption, understanding how people learn has become increasingly important. Neurotechnology, using non-invasive tools such as EEG headsets, allows researchers to observe brain activity in real time and gain insights into attention, engagement, and cognitive states. By combining these insights with artificial intelligence and data analytics, ITCILO aims to develop learning systems that respond dynamically to learners’ needs, support teachers in real time, and enhance overall learning outcomes. This approach highlights the potential to improve inclusion, particularly for individuals with attention or learning difficulties, while emphasizing ethical use, privacy, and responsible application.",

"name": "Study Illuminates How Diatoms Thrive in the Southern Ocean | by W. M. Balch and others for Global Biogeochemical Cycles",
"about": "New research reveals that the bright turquoise waters south of the Great Calcite Belt are dominated by silica-rich diatoms, with surprising traces of coccolithophores, challenging assumptions about plankton distribution in the frigid Southern Ocean.",
"text": "Building on earlier discoveries of coccolithophore blooms in the Great Calcite Belt, scientists now show that the intense reflectance further south comes mainly from dense diatom frustules. These silica-based structures mimic the optical signature of coccolithophores, finally resolving a satellite-imaging mystery. Unexpectedly, the team also detected coccolithophores thriving in waters once thought too cold, hinting at wider resilience and transport via southern eddies. By combining ship-based measurements of ocean color, carbon, and silica with microscopy, researchers traced how plankton communities shift from dinoflagellates in subtropical waters to coccolithophores in the calcite belt, and then to diatoms near Antarctica. The findings refine understanding of carbon cycling in one of Earth’s key carbon sinks and point to the need for improved satellite algorithms to distinguish plankton types in polar seas.",
