Using a comparative perspective, it focuses on Indonesian and Japanese legal systems. Normative legal research is employed, with statutory and comparative approaches, analyzing primary, secondary, and tertiary legal materials through qualitative methods and inductive conclusions. Results show conceptual similarities: material conditions are based on lex patriae, formal conditions on lex loci celebration. Spouses do not automatically gain or lose citizenship, which requires naturalization.
