He distinguishes between AI capabilities and AI agency, highlighting the latter's potential for deception and self-preservation. Bengio points out the commercial pressures driving the development of increasingly agentic AI, often without adequate safety measures. He introduces \"scientist AI,\" a concept modeled after a selfless scientist focused on understanding without agency, as a potential guardrail against harmful AI actions. He urges a collective effort to steer AI development towards a safe path where it serves as a global public good.",

"text": "This 10th edition of the Global Report on Internal Displacement (GRID) once again presents record-breaking figures, with a global estimate of 83.4 million people living in internal displacement at the end of 2024 – more than twice the number reported in the first GRID a decade ago. Conflicts and violence have left 73.5 million people displaced and disasters 9.8 million, in both cases the highest figures on record. Behind each of these internally displaced people (IDPs) is a life uprooted and a future jeopardised.\n\nThe ever-increasing number of IDPs results in part from the insufficient support they receive to put an end to their displacement by returning home or making a new home elsewhere and addressing their related needs. Several countries dealing with crises that have lasted years or even decades, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Yemen, recorded their highest ever number of IDPs in 2024.",

"text": "In 2025, sustainable cruising is more important than ever as travelers demand lower-impact travel. While cruises have long faced criticism for emissions and waste, real progress is underway. New ships now use cleaner fuels like LNG, shore power, hybrid systems, and advanced wastewater treatment. Lines like Disney, Virgin Voyages, and MSC lead with strong environmental goals, no single-use plastics, and food waste reduction programs. Others are catching up through carbon offsets, biofuels, and better sourcing. Though not every cruise is eco-friendly yet, growing innovation and accountability are reshaping the industry.",

"text": "The article presents an optimistic yet realistic vision of Earth in 2050, showing what is possible if decisive global action is taken today. Rather than focusing on collapse, it highlights ecosystem restoration, reforestation, cleaner air and water, biodiversity recovery, and climate stability. Restoring forests, wetlands, rivers, and oceans strengthens natural systems that regulate climate and support food and water cycles.\r\n\r\nThe future includes cities built around green spaces, renewable energy, and low-emission transport, where clean air and healthy living are the norm.\r\n\r\nCommunity-led initiatives, environmental education, Indigenous knowledge, and global cooperation drive change, supported by organisations such as Planet Earth Foundation. The message is clear: 2050 is a choice for future generations.",

"about": "Global fish migrations are rapidly collapsing due to dams, overfishing, and habitat loss, threatening biodiversity, ecosystems, and food security for millions of people worldwide.",
"text": "These migrations, once as predictable as seasons, sustain ecosystems, cultures, and livelihoods across major river basins. Species such as salmon, sturgeon, and giant catfish depend on long, connected waterways to survive, but barriers like dams and environmental degradation are disrupting these routes. A 2026 global assessment found 325 migratory freshwater fish species in urgent need of international conservation, with many already at high risk of extinction and some populations—especially large “megafish”—declining by over 95% in recent decades. \n\nRivers like the Mekong, Amazon, and Ganges-Brahmaputra illustrate how migration loss affects food systems and communities relying on fisheries. Because many rivers cross national borders, effective protection requires coordinated global action, including restoring river connectivity, protecting habitats, and improving fisheries management to prevent further collapse.",

"text": "The report highlights the accelerating environmental crisis affecting mountain regions worldwide. Rising temperatures are driving rapid glacier melt, altering snowfall patterns, and increasing hazards such as landslides, avalanches, and glacial lake outburst floods. \n\nMountains supply up to 60% of global freshwater, making these changes critical for billions of people downstream. Scientists warn that many river systems have already reached “peak water,” after which water availability will decline as glaciers shrink. Pollution and human activities such as tourism and mining further strain fragile ecosystems, while biodiversity is under threat as species are forced to move to higher elevations. The report emphasizes that these interconnected challenges—climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution—require urgent global action, including sustainable land management, ecosystem restoration, and reduced emissions to protect both mountain and lowland communities.",

This 49th edition includes two special chapters, one on the role of firms in immigrant integration, another one on the international migration of health professionals to OECD countries. The Outlook also includes country notes and a detailed statistical annex.\n\nFollowing three years of sharp post-pandemic increases, permanent migration to OECD countries declined by 4% in 2024. The total of 6.2 million new permanent immigrants remains nevertheless historically high – 15% above 2019 levels.\n\nFamily remained the leading reason for permanent migration to OECD countries. Labour migration declined (‑21%), after a sustained increase since 2020. Humanitarian migration increased (+23%) due to the high number of asylum applications in preceding years and a record level of new resettled refugees (+19%).",

"about": "Global coal demand in 2025 grew moderately, remaining near 2024 levels.",
"text": "Global coal demand in 2025 grew modestly above 2024 levels, rising by only 0.4%, an increase of around 30 million tonnes (or 0.7 EJ). This growth, which was in line with IEA estimates, was significantly below the 1.4% increase seen in 2024 and marked the end of the post-Covid rebound, with global coal demand growth slowing each year since 2021.\n\nCoal use in power generation diverged from recent trends in several regions around the world. In the United States, strong coal use in the power sector supported a 10% rise in demand, reversing the trend of declines in recent years. Meanwhile, in China – by far the world’s biggest coal consumer – electricity generation from coal fell for the first time since 2015. In India, coal-fired electricity generation also declined, mostly due to the impact of an early and strong monsoon. And in the European Union, the long-term decrease in coal use slowed, mostly due to low hydropower and wind output.",

"text": "Researchers at IT4Innovations have developed an advanced AI model, FG-DCS-CNN, capable of detecting epileptic seizures from EEG recordings with remarkable speed and accuracy. By combining convolutional neural networks with Dynamic Channel Selection and Feature Generation modules, the system isolates the most relevant brain signals, filters out noise, and identifies subtle patterns that indicate seizure activity. Unlike many data-intensive approaches, this model performs effectively even on smaller datasets, achieving accuracy levels close to 100% for certain seizure types and maintaining a low rate of false alarms.\n\nA key breakthrough lies in its real-time processing capability, analysing EEG data within milliseconds and allowing clinicians to monitor patients continuously and respond more effectively. The model significantly reduces the burden of manual EEG interpretation, improving diagnostic precision and saving valuable time in clinical workflows.",

New research, published on March 25 in Nature, puts a dollar value on the harm done to individual nations and the world by carbon dioxide emitted over time by countries and major companies.\n\nResearchers developed a new framework for calculating “loss and damage,” or harms from climate change that countries can’t prevent by cutting emissions or avoid through adaptation.\n\nU.S. emissions since 1990 have caused more than $10 trillion in global economic damages, with roughly a third of the damage hitting the country’s own GDP.\n\nRemoving carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is a potential alternative to compensation for damages caused, but becomes much less effective if action is delayed.",

"text": "From trips on private jets and encounters with world leaders to shocking accounts of misogyny and double standards behind the scenes, this searing memoir exposes both the personal and the political fallout when unfettered power and a rotten company culture take hold. In a gripping and often absurd narrative where a few people carelessly hold the world in their hands, this eye-opening memoir reveals what really goes on among the global elite.\n\nSarah Wynn-Williams tells the wrenching but fun story of Facebook, mapping its rise from stumbling encounters with juntas to Mark Zuckerberg’s reaction when he learned of Facebook’s role in Trump’s election. She experiences the challenges and humiliations of working motherhood within a pressure cooker of a workplace, all while Sheryl Sandberg urges her and others to “lean in.”\n\nCareless People is a deeply personal account of why and how things have gone so horribly wrong in the past decade—told in a sharp, candid, and utterly disarming voice.",

Travel off-peak, take trains over planes, pack reusables, and choose accommodations and activities that prioritize the planet and local communities. Reducing waste, carbon, and over-tourism doesn't mean giving up comfort—it just takes awareness. From zero-waste hotels to ethical wildlife tours, every decision helps. Sustainable travel isn’t about perfection—it’s about respect, smarter choices, and leaving a positive impact wherever you go.",

"about": "The 2024 edition of the State of Global Water Resources report documents an extraordinary year shaped by record heat, climate extremes, and widespread water-related impacts.",
"text": "With global surface temperatures reaching 1.55 °C above pre-industrial levels, 2024 was the hottest year in the 175-year observational record. Strong El Niño conditions at the start of the year amplified drought in South America and southern Africa, while other regions faced devastating floods.\r\n\r\nAcross the water cycle, extremes were evident: rivers, reservoirs, lakes, groundwater, and glaciers all showed significant departures from normal. While parts of Africa, Europe, and Asia were inundated by flooding, South America and southern Africa endured severe drought. Glaciers continued record ice loss, adding to sea level rise. These events brought widespread human and economic costs, underscoring the urgent need for better monitoring, early warning, and adaptive water management in the face of a warming climate.",
