Initiatives like the EU Mission “A Soil Deal for Europe” promote research, innovation, and sustainable practices to restore soil health, enhance carbon storage, and improve biodiversity, establishing 100 Living Labs and Lighthouses by 2030 for knowledge sharing and place-based experimentation. Agriculture and forestry depend on natural resources like water and nutrients but can deplete them, with water scarcity and climate change causing floods, erosion, and chemical leaching. "about": "Africa’s vast critical mineral wealth offers a once-in-a-century opportunity to drive sustainable development and economic growth—if the continent ensures fair deals, local processing, and transparent governance.",
"text": "Critical minerals like lithium, cobalt, graphite, and rare earths are now central to national security and the global green transition. With demand set to surge by 2050, Africa has a unique chance to become a key driver of economic growth and social progress.\n\nAfrica holds a third of the world’s critical mineral reserves, yet most are exported raw, and only a fraction is processed locally. Past experience shows that unequal deals can leave countries poor despite vast resources, as seen in the DRC. To avoid this, African nations need transparent governance, long-term strategies, and agreements that advance domestic interests.\n\nBy increasing local processing, investing mineral revenues in energy access and economic diversification, and ensuring political stability, Africa can turn its critical minerals into a foundation for sustainable development and lasting prosperity, rather than repeating the mistakes of the past.",

Not only can access to safe water be affected by direct acts of violence, but conflicts also indirectly impact water access in many ways. \n\nThis issue is exacerbated in protracted conflicts, as these indirect impacts on water access show their devastating consequences especially in the long term. While international humanitarian law protects access to water in non-international armed conflicts in some respects, socio-economic governance in general and the provision of safe water in particular is only marginally determined by this body of law. This chapter therefore focuses on the obligations arising from the human right to water in protracted conflicts. First, it discusses how the right could fill protection gaps under international humanitarian law that arise specifically in protracted conflicts and also points to possible normative tensions between the two bodies of law.",

"about": "The South Pole Telescope (SPT) collaboration has published the results of the telescope’s first two years of observations. The findings confirm the overall robustness of the Big Bang model, but also suggest that our model of the Universe may need revising.",
"text": "The results exacerbate the discrepancy between the cosmic microwave background and supernova explosions in regards to the expansion of the Universe. They also undermine the cosmological constant model by revealing a disparity with 3D galaxy maps. This analysis was carried out by a team led by Silvia Galli at the Institut d’astrophysique de Paris (IAP - Sorbonne University/CNRS), with support from the ERC NEUCosmoS project. Their results have been published in the journal Physical Review D. \n\nLocated at the US Antarctic base, the telescope is equipped with a third-generation camera (SPT-3G). The camera produces sky maps of unrivalled precision and sensitivity. These maps improve upon observations of the cosmic microwave background - the first light in the Universe, previously produced by the European Planck satellite telescope and recent observations from the ACT telescope located in the Atacama Desert (Chile).",

"about": "The Group of Seven (G7) countries, in a landmark declaration, has placed desertification, land degradation and drought at the heart of their environmental priorities.",
"text": "Adopted at the G7 Environment Ministerial meeting in Paris (April 23-24), the G7 Environment Ministers’ Declaration formally described desertification and drought as “systemic global challenges” and “security risk multipliers”. The framing marked a significant policy shift, treating land degradation not only as an environmental issue but also as a core development and security risk.\n\nNearly 40% of global land is already affected by degradation, impacting an estimated 3.2 bn people worldwide, it said. It warned that declining soil health, water stress and ecosystem loss are weakening agricultural productivity, disrupting rural livelihoods, and reducing economic resilience. \n\nThe declaration document also underlined a growing policy concern: Environmental stress is increasingly translating into social and political instability. It noted that competition over shrinking land and water resources is intensifying displacement pressures and contributing to conflict risks.",

"text": "The article reports on a new Eurobarometer survey showing that citizens across the European Union strongly support more unified, decisive, and ambitious leadership as the bloc faces growing military, economic, technological, and climate-related challenges. Conducted in November through face-to-face interviews with over 2,600 respondents, the poll found that 90% want greater EU unity, 87% support a more assertive diplomatic role, and 69% favor expanding the EU’s global security role.\n\nSecurity concerns dominate public priorities. A majority of respondents said they are highly worried about nearby armed conflicts, cyberwarfare, disinformation campaigns, climate-driven disasters, and foreign interference, particularly from Russia. As a result, defense has become the top priority in 18 of the EU’s 27 member states. Citizens also expressed anxiety over the EU’s reliance on imported defense materials and vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure.",

"text": "Involving the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, the study highlights critical scientific and management gaps that limit the role of blue carbon ecosystems in global climate strategies. These coastal wetlands, which capture and store carbon dioxide in sediments, remain underrepresented in national greenhouse gas inventories, with only about 20% of countries including them. Published in Nature Ecology & Evolution, the study outlines a global research and policy agenda to accelerate conservation and restoration efforts. \n\nWhile advances in carbon measurement, modelling, and remote sensing have improved understanding, uncertainties persist around carbon fluxes and environmental drivers. Experts stress the need for stronger scientific evidence, improved governance, and balanced approaches that support both large-scale ecosystem management and local livelihoods, unlocking their potential to mitigate emissions.",

How should Americans understand—and come to terms with—contemporary partisan polarization and the democratic backsliding afflicting politics in the United States today? In this volume, contributors argue that the historical-institutionalist approach practiced by scholars of American Political Development (APD) offers enormous potential and can shed light on the paradoxical character of American party politics in general and the present conflicts plaguing the polity in particular.\n\nParties, Power, and Change draws together a broad range of contributions from a new generation of historically oriented social scientists for the first time, and foregrounds political parties in the study of APD. By doing so, the volume highlights the ways in which party development has both been shaped by, and contributed to, changes in governing institutions and the democratic polity.",

"about": "Located 70 kilometers away from the center of Beijing, it is one of the famous sections of the Great Wall in Beijing and represents the essence of the Ming Dynasty's Great Wall.",
"text": "Constructed during the Ming Dynasty, the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall is among the best-preserved and most representative stretches from that period. Extending between Gubeikou in the east and Juyongguan in the west, it features notable watchtowers such as Zhengguan Pass, Dajiaolou, Yingfeidaoyang, Jiankou, and Beijingjie. Owing to its historical significance and cultural richness, Mutianyu is considered one of the most remarkable sections of the Ming Great Wall.\n\nToday, it is the second most visited part of the Wall and particularly popular among international visitors. Known for its scenic beauty, it offers impressive views and carefully restored towers that retain an authentic character. The site is relatively easy to access, with tourist buses reaching it from Beijing. The pathway is well maintained and suitable for walking, while amenities such as a cable car and toboggan add convenience and appeal for visitors.",

"about": "The A23a iceberg, which until last year was the largest in the world, has completely broken apart while drifting in the Southern Ocean, TASS reports the press service of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI).",
"text": "The A23a iceberg, once the world’s largest iceberg, has almost completely disintegrated after being tracked for 40 years since breaking off from Antarctica’s Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf in 1986. Originally covering about 4,170 km², it remained grounded in the Weddell Sea for over 30 years before beginning to drift into open waters in 2023. Over time, it progressively broke apart, with large fragments separating in 2025 and reducing its size to a fraction of its original area. At one point still measuring around 1,300 km², it has since rapidly shrunk to less than 50 km², losing 99% of its mass. The iceberg also drifted thousands of kilometers, including near South Georgia Island, where it temporarily grounded before continuing its movement into the South Atlantic. As of late 2025, A23a is fragmenting into smaller pieces and drifting near 49°S latitude, marking the end of its status as a major iceberg and highlighting the natural processes of ice loss in a warming climate.",

"text": "The directive amends the water framework directive, the groundwater directive and the directive on environmental quality standards, aligning EU water policy with the latest scientific evidence.\n\nTo improve water quality, the EU has already put in place rules for monitoring and reducing the release of identified dangerous substances and pollutants in surface water and groundwater. The EU-wide list of these substances has now been expanded and updated, including pharmaceuticals (such as painkillers), pesticides, bisphenols, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS, a group of so-called ‘forever chemicals’). For the first time, the directive introduces rules to assess the cumulative risk of combined substances.\n\nTo support future reviews, the directive also adds microplastics and antimicrobial resistance indicators to the EU’s water watchlists, which help track substances of emerging concern.",
