"text": "Prof. Daniel Mandler and his Hebrew University team developed patented technology to create compressed salt blocks that can be used for construction. This process involves mixing salt with stabilizing agents, grinding and sizing it into its desired texture and color, and compressing it into its desired shape which can produce bricks or tiles. “Non-toxic, non-flammable, very strong, has very good insulation and is also very healthy for people to breathe,” is how he describes the salt building blocks. “Cement is the second-worst pollutant on Earth. And it is directly responsible for between eight to nine percent of the global carbon dioxide production,” Mandler tells NoCamels. “People are working on finding a replacement for cement, which is not easy because the construction industry is one of the most conservative industries.”\nNoCamels also shares information on local innovations in the construction sector and where the blue and green solutions are already being used.",

"text": "It may be surprising to know that we consume only 6% of the 270 million metric tons of salt produced worldwide. Of the remaining 94%, a small proportion is used for softening water, de-icing roads, and agriculture, with the largest volume being used for industrial processes including the manufacture of PVC, plastics, and paper pulp.\r\nThere are essentially 3 methods to produce salt on a larger scale.\r\nSea salt production involves one of the oldest and effective chemical methods to extract salt from evaporating seawater using the solar evaporation method.\r\nRock salt is extracted from none other than the Khewra salt mines. Rock salt, commonly known as Himalayan pink salt, is present in abundance under rocky layers covered with lava.\r\nThe most common and widely used table salt is made by brining salt deposits and evaporating salt brines. Manufacturers further process the obtained salt crystals into fine grains that can be easily mixed in food.",

"about": "European Parliament voted for a veto on the Draft Delegated Act for the inclusion of salt in the Organic Regulation, since the inclusion of salt, a natural mineral being in the Act would have created discriminations among salt producers and countries",
"text": "Various countries disagreed on the certification of organic sea salt. In particular, there isn't an organic certification for salt in the United States. It's also correctly scientifically because salt is a crystalline mineral chemical compound that is composed primarily of sodium chloride (NaCl). The USDA classifies salt as a mineral—not a living thing with carbon compounds. As a result, USA do not have this official recognition for organic salts. Many other countries have certifications for organic sea salts, such as Nature et Progrès in France. Sadly, the USDA does not currently recognize these certifications. Thus, salt inclusion in the Organic Regulation would have confused consumers, contradicted the very principles of local supply chains as well as excluded more than 90% of salt producers from organic production. That's why the veto for act Regulation regarding the production of organic sea salt and other organic salts was very important for sustainable salt market",

"about": "The global trend of population aging is a significant phenomenon driven by improvements in health, survival, and declining fertility rates, as notified by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs.",
"text": "The World Social Report 2023 commemorates the twentieth anniversary of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing by exploring the economic and social implications of population aging. The report emphasises that while population aging is inevitable due to demographic transitions, policy decisions and collective actions can shape its impact. Delaying necessary measures to adapt to aging populations would lead to substantial social, economic, and health-related costs. On the other hand, proactive planning and foresight by governments can effectively manage the challenges of population aging while providing opportunities for all individuals to thrive and contribute across various aspects of society. The report underscores the need to understand population aging as more than a concern solely for the elderly, as it touches upon all facets of economies and societies.",

"about": "Nobian, as a European salt & chemical market leader, one of the most sustainable companies within the European chemical industry, asked Ecomatters to conduct an LCA on the different options for salt producing to define the environmental footprints",
"text": "There are several genetic types of salt deposits and several different methods of salt obtaining, namely, underground rock salt mining, rock salt leaching method, lake salt mining, and solar sea salt harvesting. Ecomatters analysed the Product Environmental Footprint score of the different salt sources and different kind of its obtaining taking into account all factors of extraction, processing, storing and transporting from various possible overseas sources. The study concluded that high-purity vacuum salt from the Netherlands had the smallest environmental footprint. It also found that the salt mining and production operations of sea- and rock salt have a smaller footprint than the production of vacuum salt. When focussing on the impact of the production stage alone, using sea or rock salt appears to be a sustainable alternative. This study showed that it is crucial to look at the different aspects of the entire supply chain to evaluate the sustainability of alternative salt sources",

"name": "Chinese scientists and Canadian specialists presented the research results on hydrogen storage facilities in salt caverns in Southern Ontario, Canada (“Mining”, July 2023)",
"about": "The authors of the newest paper (Shasha Hui et. al.) published by MDPI Journal (July 2023) put forward the most appropriate development strategy for salt caverns for hydrogen storages to reduce the risk of large-scale storage design in the future",
"text": "Salt caverns, with their inert cavity environments and stable physical properties, offer the most promising options for future hydrogen storage. Large-scale hydrogen storage in salt caverns has been under construction around the world, for example, in Teesside in the UK; Clemens Dome, Moss Bluff, and Spindle top in the USA; Kiel in Germany; and in northern and southern Poland. Hydrogen research needs to develop more for using it in green energy transition. In this study, hydrogen’s physical and chemical properties are first introduced; the geological conditions of the underground reservoirs in three counties of Southern Ontario are analysed, especially salt caverns. Several potential challenges that may affect the safe storage of hydrogen in salt caverns are also noted, and appropriate solutions are provided. Presented research materials are developing the doctrine of hydrogen energy and they are beneficial to improve the local energy structure",

"text": "A need for large-scale underground storage of hydrogen is great because supply and demand of hydrogen are not constant. Due to HyStock, the Netherlands solves the tasks of \"green energy\" rapidly, two existing caverns at salt dome in Zuidwending have already been consider as pilot hydrogen storages. \r\nWhen specialists have demonstrated that it is safe will they proceed with the development of large-scale hydrogen storage having own experience, as well as UK and USA ones. According to plan, the installation with a first cavern will be operational in 2028. The animation on the website shows how caverns are made. It is planned to use pipes from HyStock's gas transport network when they would become available for the transport of hydrogen because of reducing natural gas supply. Hydrogen storage will be accessible to all parties wishing to store hydrogen, for short or longer term. This project is being implemented in part with Top Sector Energy grant from the Ministry of Economic Affairs",

In 2022, these key drivers were associated with lingering socioeconomic impacts\r\nof COVID-19, the knock-on effects of the war in Ukraine and repeated droughts and other weather extremes.\r\nConflict/insecurity was the most significant driver in 19 countries/territories. Economic shocks (including the socioeconomic impacts of COVID-19 and the repercussions of the war in Ukraine) became the main driver in 27 countries. Weather extremes were the primary driver of acute food insecurity in 12 countries.",

This demonstrates that the deteriorations were larger than the improvements, as the post-COVID rises of civil unrest and political instability remain high while regional and global conflicts accelerate.\nThe impact of violence on the global economy increased by $1 trillion to a record $17.5 trillion. This is equivalent to 13% of global GDP, approximately $2,200 per person. This was due to increased military expenditure owing to the Ukraine war. The disparity in the economic impact of violence is stark: the ten countries most affected averaged 34% of GDP, compared to just 3% for the ten least affected.",
