It also features a ventilation shaft about 55 metres deep that served both for air circulation and as a water well. Although Derinkuyu opened to visitors in 1965, only around ten percent of the city is accessible today. However, the delicate and microscopic nature of their sub-cellular features affords early eukaryotes diminished preservation potential. Chemical biomarker signatures of eukaryotes and the genetics of living eukaryotes have emerged as complementary tools for reconstructing eukaryote ancestry. In this review, we argue that exceptionally preserved Proterozoic microfossils are critical to interpreting these complementary tools, providing crucial calibrations to molecular clocks and testing hypotheses of palaeoecology. We highlight recent research on their preservation and biomolecular composition that offers new ways to enhance their utility.\n\nPublished:21 August 2024https://doi.org/10.1098/rsos.240154", "link_original": "https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rsos.240154", "status": 2, "country": [], "sections": [ { "id": 145, "name": "History of Earth: insights for the future" } ], "root_section": { "id": 107, "name": "Life-friendly Earth" }, "is_photo": false, "is_video": false, "is_large_font": false, "show_in_news_list": false, "url_to_show_in_news_list": "", "location_filters": { "countries": [], "regions": [ { "id": 12, "name": "Global" } ] }, "filters": [] }, { "id": "ec99d088-e3b2-4146-aba1-dc9fe284e257", "slug": "eos-science-news-magazine-a-seafloor-spreading-slowdown-may-have-slashed-sea-levels-by-sarah-stanley-post", "created_at": "2025-06-18T12:37:05.894792Z", "views": 14, "name": "Eos Science News Magazine: A Seafloor Spreading Slowdown May Have Slashed Sea Levels, by Sarah Stanley", "about": "Understanding how tectonic plate behavior affects sea levels adds a crucial piece to Earth’s climate puzzle - complementing well-known drivers like ice melt and temperature-driven water expansion.", "text": "Between 15 million and 6 million years ago, a drop in ocean crust production may have lowered sea level by 26–32 meters. Today we are witnessing rapid global sea level rise attributable mostly to climate change–driven melting of ice sheets and glaciers and thermal expansion of seawater. However, sea level change also occurs over millions of years as geological processes gradually reshape Earth’s ocean basins and change their total storage volume.\n\nIn the new work, the researchers considered various possible initial conditions for the area and ages of ocean crust, as well as crust destruction rates, calculating that the ancient seafloor spreading slowdown would have resulted in a sea level drop of 26–32 meters. This amount is comparable to the sea level change that would result today if the entire East Antarctic Ice Sheet (Earth’s largest ice sheet) melted, but in reverse.", "link_original": "https://eos.org/research-spotlights/a-seafloor-spreading-slowdown-may-have-slashed-sea-levels", "status": 2, "country": [], "sections": [ { "id": 167, "name": "Lithosphere" } ], "root_section": { "id": 107, "name": "Life-friendly Earth" }, "is_photo": false, "is_video": false, "is_large_font": false, "show_in_news_list": false, "url_to_show_in_news_list": "", "location_filters": { "countries": [], "regions": [] }, "filters": [] }, { "id": "f845023c-f370-4f51-85ba-5aac6e2684d7", "slug": "how-the-earth-and-moon-formed-explained-by-sasha-warren-for-uchicago-news-post", "created_at": "2026-02-02T11:14:27.063298Z", "views": 6, "name": "How the Earth and moon formed, explained | by Sasha Warren for UChicago News", "about": "Understanding how the Earth and moon formed is important for piecing together the history of the solar system and answering questions like how long planets take to form, what planets are made of, and what makes a planet suitable for life.", "text": "The Earth, like all the other planets in the solar system, started out its life as a disc of dust and gas orbiting the young sun. The dust particles were brought together by the forces of drag to form clumps of rock that grew into what scientists call “planetesimals,” which are tens to hundreds of miles across, and then to Mars-sized “protoplanets” by colliding with each other. \n\nEarth grew to its final size through one last major collision with another Mars-sized object. This last collision, also known as the “moon-forming impact,” was so large that—in addition to adding lots of material to the Earth—there was enough energy to vaporize some of the rock and metal from both the proto-Earth and the impacting object.
